A 72-year old woman was gored by a bison in Yellowstone National Park on Thursday, June 25.A news release from park officials says the tourist approached within 10 feet of a bison several times to take its photo, and the bison gored her. It happened Thursday evening at the woman's campsite at Bridge Bay Campground.Rangers provided immediate medical care to the woman who sustained numerous goring wounds. She was then flown via helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.“The series of events that led to the goring suggest the bison was threatened by being repeatedly approached to within 10 feet,” said Yellowstone’s senior bison biologist, Chris Geremia. “Bison are wild animals that respond to threats by displaying aggressive behaviors like pawing the ground, snorting, bobbing their head, bellowing, and raising their tail. If that doesn’t make the threat (in this instance it was a person) move away, a threatened bison may charge. Daisy Muniz works at the same elementary school she attended while growing up in Reedley, California. "I moved here from Mexico when I was five, and I've been in Reedley all my life," said Muniz. Reedley is a rural town in central California that has seen better days. Its unemployment level is more than triple the national average, but it's trying to flip the switch on its economic woes and take the city to new heights. "When I came on board, we actually were going through a pretty bad cycle," said city manager Nicole Ziba. "Had an unemployment rate of 33 percent. That means 1 out of every 3 people that you would run into was out of a job and looking for one. That's a pretty dire situation economically." The town is trying to parlay its history with aviation into a bright future above the clouds. "The reason we have a shortage is that the cost of getting your pilot certificate is so high that it prices a lot of people out of that market or out of even considering that career path," said Joseph Oldham, with the San Joaquin Valley Clean Transportation Center. It starts with their best and brightest. Jefferson Elementary has a new state of the art flight simulator, courtesy of Boeing. It's part of the company’s plan to inspire a new generation of pilots. Rose, a student at the elementary school, doesn't have her sights set on staying in Reedley forever. "Paris, Rome, Washington DC and Mexico," said Rose on places she'd live. If she decides to cash in on her new found skills, she won't have to leave the city limits to train. "They teach us ground school lessons, so everything from we need to learn about the physics of flying, to learning airports, airport diagrams, and then they teach us as well in the simulator class how to actually fly the plane. That gets us ready for when we go to the actual airport and fly the real thing," said Benjamin Jones, a student in the Reedley College. Reedley College has a flight training program offering a less expensive option for prospective aviators. It's all part of the city’s bid to become a pilot pipeline. "You hear a lot of kids, 'I want to be a fireman. I want to be a policeman.' Now that this is here, now they have, 'Oh, we could fly planes? we could be pilots?'" said Muniz. But even if the students don't become pilots, just having the simulator around presents new horizons. "It doesn't just open up the possibility for this, but now it's like opening their minds to, what else? What's out there? What more can I do?," said Muniz. 2528

Megan and Fadil Lee's love story started when the two were freshmen in college, and it may have ended there had Fadil not sent Megan a Facebook message 25 years later. “I was like, OK, is he single or married?” Megan recalls. After dating for a year and a half, the two married, and Fadil wanted to be a first-time father. Megan was on board, despite being 45 years old and already having two adult kids. “Let's face it; we're all living longer, you know,” Megan says. “And I don't think that age should be an inhibitor for you if you're in good health and you're in good shape. I think that those options should be available to you.”Dr. Paul Magarelli, who specializes in fertility for older women, agrees. “Now that we're living to 80, 90 and 100, the idea of a baby at 50 really is not that crazy,” he says. Dr. Magarelli is helping the couple conceive through IVF. “The uterus doesn't age; it’s a muscle. So, they've done successful IVF and women with donor egg up to age 74 and still got healthy babies,” Dr. Magarelli says. Megan is planning to use her own eggs, but the reality is most older women use frozen or donor eggs. “Once you reach the age of 44 and above the number of eggs that are available to make a baby are preciously few, so most families at some point will use donor eggs,” Dr. Magarelli says. There are significant risks for both mother and baby, including gestational diabetes, pregnancy-induced hypertension, as well as pregnancy loss. Babies also have a higher risk of chromosome abnormalities, such as Down syndrome. Megan and Fadil say they are aware of the risks and are being proactive. “We are going to do genetic testing on the embryos because of our age,” Megan says. “So, we want to make sure that all the chromosomes are supposed to be there are there in full and complete.” These come along with a hefty price tag. Standard IVF treatments can cost anywhere from ,000 to ,000. Paying out of pocket for the procedure, the couple hopes everything goes right on their first try.“We both have a very strong faith, and so if stuff doesn't work out, then we're going to look at that as a sign from God that we're just not supposed to be parents at this stage in our life,” she says. 2232

BRANSON, Mo. – Tourist destinations across America have a busy season and an off-season. During the off-season, the economy tends to slow down. That holds true for a couple months each year in Branson, Missouri – a place known as a family-friendly town usually filled with visitors in the parks, lakes, and shops. “We are at about a six week standstill after the first of the year,” said Lynn Berry with the Branson Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau. The rest of the time, Branson welcomes 9 million visitors a year. When the town’s busy season slows down, nonprofit Christian Action Ministries speeds up. “Right now is the height of our season at Christian Action Ministries and dealing with food insecurity,” said Kevin Huddleston, the executive director with Christian Action Ministries.The organization helps feed the community. “Primarily to help people get through the off-season months,” he said. Huddleston said during the summer they see around 100 households a day. During this time of the year, that number is about 150. The population of Branson floats around 12,000 people for perspective. Each day, people line up before the doors open.“If it wasn’t for places like this, I’d go hungry most of the time,” Art said. Art is one of the people who came down to get food, something people can do once a month from this nonprofit. The process starts with some basic questions about your job, household and cooking abilities. Then they are allowed to pick two breads while the volunteers pack a larger bag accordingly.“Most of the people you see here wouldn’t eat if it wasn’t for places like this,” Art said. Art currently lives out of his car. “Construction or I work in restaurants, I’ll wash dishes, you know anything. Usually in the summer I try to work two jobs so I can save up for the time off,” he said. “Most tourism jobs are more of an entry-level position, a lot of them are part-time,” Huddleston said. “These jobs really aren’t intended for family breadwinners.” This is a situation Branson and other tourism-focused towns face.“Branson is kind of a perfect storm of tourism and poverty,” said Bryan Stallings, the executive director at Elevate Branson. The nonprofit helps people learn job skills. “Low paying wages, seasonal unemployment, no transportation system and no affordable housing,” Stallings explained. “It’s kind of created this perfect storm for poverty.” As people with low incomes looked to find other places to live, weekly rate motels flourished. But recently, there’s been trouble there too.“Over 40 of these motels we’ve seen about 16 of them close,” Stallings said. “Which is putting a squeeze on places to live for folks.” He said the town is 1,300 units short on affordable housing units. “One of the things we are trying to work with particularly is moving people out of hotel and motel rooms that have been serving as their apartment,” Lynn Berry said. She said while she sees a lot of people draw unemployment this time of year, Branson is doing better. “Truly back in the day, you could shoot a cannon down Main Street after October 31, and not hit anyone until about April 1,” she said. Local restaurants like Big D’s BBQ have come up with solutions to help maintain business in the winter. “We do [pull] back our schedule to some extent, we do close one day of the week here in the restaurant,” said Dana Peterson, the owner Big D’s BBQ. They feed up to a couple thousand people a day in the summer. During the winter, that number is in the hundreds. “It’s our core group of people that maintain the full employment, not our seasonal help when staff is at full capacity,” he said.Lynn said they’ve brought in more museums and other activities to do in town during bad weather or the parks off seasons, to help create more interest in coming to Branson during the winter. “Museums were probably the biggest hit for us,” she said.Branson continues to look for ways to make the town more year round, and keep people working. “It’s going to take all of us working together in our community to solve some of these issues,” Stallings said. 4120
