SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Escondido firefighter is being praised for a small act of kindness that impacted a 7-year-old in a big way.Last week the department was responding to palm trees on fire. That's when Craig Domingue, a fire engineer, noticed Eli walking with his mom. "We happened to be walking and spotted the fire truck. Eli kind of, his anxiety was kicking in," said Eli's mom, Monica Zamora. Eli is on the autism spectrum; loud noises and first responders give him anxiety. "I just went up to him and introduced myself and talked to him like I would talk to any person, and it was a really neat interaction," said Domingue.Domingue says he was able to recognize Eli was on the spectrum because his 10-year-old son is too. He was able to calm Eli down and thanked him for picking up trash."Eli at the time was out picking up trash, which is so neat that he's here doing something good for our community, just like all the other firefighters that are here doing good for the community," said Domingue. "We do go pick up trash a lot, but it's not often people acknowledge him and thank him for what he's doing," said Zamora. Zamora shared the positive interaction on Facebook, and over 1,000 people have reacted to the post. Many have since messaged Zamora, thanking Eli for all he does in the community. 1316

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A stolen cello worth 0,000 has been reunited with its owner. "I was driving home from downtown and I saw it. It was on C and 7th where the mailbox is at and I thought, well this is really weird. And then I got out and I knew what it was right away, so I took it," said Tony Cozano, who found the instrument. The instrument was returned to its owner, John Walz Monday. Walz is the principal cellist for the Los Angeles Opera and has played on more than 1,500 film scores from Titanic to Indiana Jones, even the new Star Wars films. RELATED: Police searching for person who reportedly stole 0,000 cello"I walked in to the house and just burst into tears. It's in perfect shape. There's no damage to it. Happy ending," said Walz in describing being reunited with the instrument. According to police, the cello was stolen on August 8 between 8 and 10 p.m. at the Town and Country Hotel on the 500 block of Hotel Circle North. In a news release, police said someone broke into the hotel room when Walz was away and stole several items. The cello was made by Mario Miralles and is valued at 0,000.  1174

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego program has received a state grant to train law enforcement officers across California.The program, Game Changer, was founded in 2016 by Sean Sheppard after he saw large protests break out across the country against police brutality.His idea was simple. He would bring members of the public together with law enforcement officers over a sports game."To get some human bonding time," explains Sheppard. "Because that rarely takes place between law enforcement and the general public."Before, they would talk for a few hours about what issues they saw between police and the communities they serve. After, they would get to socialize at the game.Since 2016, Game Changer has hosted 60 events and continues to grow.The Game Changer model was just awarded a 2-year, 0,000 grant from the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.Once the program is accredited, law enforcement personnel who complete a Game Changer event can put it toward their required training credit hours.Members of the public are needed too. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A water culvert in Logan Heights overflowed Thursday night due to heavy rain, leaving neighbors with a mess Friday, many homes destroyed from all the water.Ruben Cortez’s home got filled with about a foot of water. Initially the water just piled up outside his sliding glass door, “the water was up to here so it looked like I was inside an aquarium”. After 20 minutes water came through the front and back doors, soon filling the entire house.Cortez and his wife are remodeling their home. One week ago they installed new flooring in their bedroom. After the flooding, the floor is completely ruined.The rest of the house has tile flooring and dirt and mud everywhere.His neighbors are also dealing with similar issues. Many parked their cars on the street and during the flooding the water filled up to the steering wheel.Most people in the neighborhood, along with Cortez himself, don’t have flooding insurance. He tells 10News, “its like getting snow insurance you don’t think anything like that is going to happen and this flood wasn’t really a typical flood, it was part of the drain that came out and flooded. You don’t think of those things”. Cortez wasn’t only worried about his own home, he’s also the pastor at the church next door. While the church was okay, the children’s classroom had water damage. The water also filled between a foot to two feet in the rooms.Left with a laundry list of things to fix, remodel and clean, Cortez tells 10News, “just count your blessings and the bad things as they come in, just face them one at a time." 1581

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego Police Sergeant accused of soliciting sex with a minor was found dead after failing to show up for court Monday. Joseph Ruvido, 49, was absent from his arraignment Monday, forcing a judge to issue a bench warrant and revoking his bail of 0,000. According to police, Ruvido was found dead around 4:25 p.m. as officers conducted a welfare check at his Carmel Valley home. Ruvido was charged Monday with two felony counts of arranging a meeting with a minor with sexual intent and one count of attempted lewd acts on a minor between the ages of 14 and 15.The prosecutor won't provide details citing the ongoing investigation, but says the acts were committed July 6th. Police arrested Ruvido at his home in Carmel Valley on July 26th, two days after getting a Crime Stoppers tip. Before that, Ruvido was a patrol sergeant with the department's Eastern division, according to SDPD Chief David Nisleit. He'd been with the department for 21 years.
