VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Enlly Gutierrez knows about hard times. The single mother of three is a client at Solutions for Change, a Vista organization aimed at helping homeless families. Gutierrez is one of many turning their lives around through the program, which takes 1,000 days. Gutierrez is more than halfway complete and making great strides. Her family's story started in 2017. It is a story Gutierrez doesn't mind sharing but still has an emotional time reliving. Gutierrez and her family were homeless in the streets of Escondido. They would spend their days and nights at the hotels and restaurants along Mission Boulevard near Centre City Parkway. They weren't just homeless; Gutierrez was also battling drug addiction.COMPLETE COVERAGE: Facing It Together: Edge of Homelessness"We would be walking to (Jack in the Box) or anywhere in these streets," she recalled. "We'd be walking with them on one stroller, and I had three of them, late at night, when it was cold. And I was just trying to get to a place to put them to sleep." "We had hotels, when I had my kids, we slept in Mount Vernon a lot," she added. "It was really hard. I'd have my sister, me, her kids, and my kids. We didn't care about the conditions we had them in. We had people in and out of the rooms. We only cared about getting high. It was just a lot of chaos." Two months of living homeless and using drugs caused her to lose her kids. "CPS decided I wasn't a fit parent because I was putting them in dangerous situations," Gutierrez said. "That was really hard. When I got them taken away, I ended up alone. I ended up walking the streets at three in the morning, not having where to sleep. I stayed behind the dumpsters behind Denny's and laid in my head and my backpack. And I just fell asleep, and I got so tired. That's when I knew I hit rock bottom." It was at that point, Gutierrez decided she needed change. It started with her kicking addiction at the Family Recovery Center. "That part was really hard for me because I've never been through treatment," she said. "But I looked It up online, and I was like, 'I'm just going to give it a shot; if I really want my kids back, if I really want my life back I have to start somewhere." It took her five months to get clean. But it wasn't enough to get her family back. "I spoke to CPS, and they're like, 'Look, Enlly, either you go out here and do the same thing, you're not going to get your kids back, or you decide to go to a program." That's how she ended up at Solutions for Change. The program requires its clients to be clean and creates an environment of structure and accountability through classes, work training, and support. But ultimately, staff members say success depends on the determination and readiness of the individual. Gutierrez was ready. She was determined to get her kids back. And she did. "They start seeing that she's going to work. She's showing up. She's not giving up," Gutierrez recalled. "That's when they're like, okay, Enlly is responsible. She's showing she wants her kids back, and I started getting reunification." Enlly has been reunited with her kids. She's also maintained several jobs. She currently works as a sales representative for Cricket Wireless, allowing her to pay for rent and provide for her family. "So now that we have a home, I'm able to be a mom, cook for them, provide for them. It's all worth it," Gutierrez said. "Just hearing them call me mom and feeling that love, and knowing that I'm needed, it's amazing." 3522

(AP) -- Family members of nine women and children from an offshoot Mormon community who were killed in Mexico in November have filed a federal lawsuit against the Juarez drug cartel. They accuse the cartel of carrying out the attack in retribution for publicly criticizing and demonstrating against the cartel.A lawyer representing the family members said they initiated the lawsuit to show the Juarez cartel was responsible for the Nov. 4 slaughter and to seek damages. It's not clear whether representatives of the cartel would appear in court to defend against the lawsuit. 582

"We were investigating drug sales on the street," said Retired Detroit Deputy Police Chief James Younger whose partner was shot in 1972 by a man who was never arrested for the crime. The shooting left Detroit Police Officer Donald Kimbrough paralyzed from the waist down and he died December 7, 2017, from medical complications that resulted from the decades old shooting. "With the knowledge that he was shot and never fully recovered, the manner is homicide," said Dr. Bernardino Pacris from the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Officer who conducted an autopsy on Kimbrough and recovered an oxidized, deformed bullet from Kimbrough's back. Younger said doctors could not remove the bullet without killing Kimbrough because of where it was located. Sergeant Todd Eby of Detroit's Homicide Task Force has been assigned to solving Officer Kimbrough's murder. It happened August 25, 1972, in an alley near a methadone clinic that was located at John R and Belmont.Kimbrough, Younger and another officer, Donald Hughes, were investigating drug activity in the area when they heard gunshots. Kimbrough and Hughes took off running to the area where witnesses said men were shooting while Younger began to navigate their vehicle around traffic to get to the location. Kimbrough and Hughes spotted one man holding a long gun and ordered him to place the weapon on the ground. Moments later, another man who was sitting in the driver's seat of a green Lincoln Continental that was parked nearby, rolled his window down and opened fire on Kimbrough and Hughes. The two officers returned fire, but Kimbrough had been shot. The man who had the long gun picked it back up off the ground and raced to hop into the green Lincoln Continental. Both men escaped. The vehicle they fled in is described as a green 1968 Lincoln Continental with a black vinyl top. It's unclear if the car was a two-door or four-door. A partial license plate may be GA- 2--.The shooter was described as a white man 25 - 30-years-old with shoulder-length black hair, a thick black mustache and long bushy sideburns. Police did recover the shooter's .32 caliber Colt semi-automatic pocket pistol. A man found it in his yard.  "Don was a good policeman. A good person and very energetic person. We spent a lot of time together not only on duty, but also off duty," said Younger who retired as a Detroit Police Chief and now teaches Criminal Justice at Wayne County Community College. If he's alive, Kimbrough's shooter could be in his seventies. But Younger, Eby, and family and friends of Donald Kimbrough believe it's not too late for someone to help solve the case by identifying a suspect. "Where's man's humanity towards man," said Younger. "If you have the information, come forth."Kimbrough leaves behind one son.Anyone with any information is urged to call Detroit’s Homicide Task Force at 313-596-5628.  3080

(CNN) -- Cruise passengers held their breath as a 22.5 meter wide cruise liner became the largest boat to pass through Greece's narrow Corinth Canal, according to its operator.Carrying 929 passengers on board, the Braemar cruise liner narrowly managed to squeeze through the rocky walls of the canal -- which measures a maximum of 25 meters wide at the water's surface -- making it the longest boat to make the journey, cruise company Fred Olsen said. The Corinth Canal is a tidal waterway connecting the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf, dividing the Pelopónnisos from mainland Greece.Ships have been navigating through the narrow waterways since 1893, but on Wednesday, Fred Olsen claimed to have captained the longest cruise ship through the canal. The ship weighs 24,344 gross tons, and is 195.82 meters long."Today Braemar made history as the longest-ever ship to cruise through the CorinthCanal," Fred Olsen cruise liners said on social media. At 6.3km (3.9 miles) long, the Corinth Canal shortens the sea route from Italian ports to the port of Athens."This is such an exciting sailing and tremendous milestone in Fred Olsen's 171-year history, and we are thrilled to have been able to share it with our guests," Clare Ward, director of product and customer service for Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines said in a statement."At Fred Olsen, we strive to create memories that last a lifetime, and with guests on board Braemar able to get so close to the edges of the Corinth Canal that they could almost touch the sides, we know that this will be a holiday that they will never forget," she added.Talk about a tight squeeze. 1631
