SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Homicide investigators have been assigned to look into a deadly fire in Logan Heights that claimed three lives. According to the San Diego Police Department, the investigators have been assigned “out of an abundance of caution.”Investigators will work closely with the metro arson strike team also looking into the incident, the department says. The fire started at a home on the 3100 block of Clay Street around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. 44-year-old Jose Romero died at the scene while his wife and daughter, 46-year-old Nicolasa Maya-Romero and 21-year-old Iris Romero died at the hospital in the days following the blaze. The family’s 23-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son remain in the hospital. The family’s oldest son, a 26-year-old, was unharmed in the fire. The 26-year-old said he awoke Sunday morning to find his bed on fire. The man told 10News he tried yelling at his family to get out of the home."My dogs were jumping on me, trying to wake me up. I woke up. When I woke up, my bed was on fire. I jumped out of bed and started screaming the house is on fire," said Wilber Romero.According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, firefighters had to go inside the home to pull many of the victims out.A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family with funeral expenses. They met when they were young and growing up in Mosul, Iraq.Now over 100 years old, Elias is a little hard of hearing, but still loves his wife deeply. The couple celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary this week, and one of their granddaughters, Lana, helped share their story"He used to tutor her when she was in high school, and they fell in love," Lana says. "The American dream they wanted, they wanted a better life, of course, they were under Saddam Hussein's reign at that time, so they just wanted a better life for their future."That was more than 30 years ago. So why did they choose Rancho San Diego as their new home?"Because it was similar weather to Iraq and they just wanted a similar, warm and sunny environment," Lana said.The celebration came with a trip to the Hotel del Coronado and a cake. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Flu cases have more than doubled in San Diego County than this time last year, health officials reported Wednesday. Six hundred patients have been diagnosed with influenza so far this flu season, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services (HHS) Agency. The number of cases soared last week, with 139 people diagnosed with the flu. During the same week last year, 57 flu cases were reported. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Flames shot out a window of a Spring Valley apartment that caught fire Thursday morning.The fire broke out at the home in the 10,000 block of Austin Drive about 10 a.m.No one was injured but the family who lives there says their cat died in the fire."I heard the beep beep beep and ran up the stairs," said Jacquline Amey, "I looked in the other room it was all smoky - opened the closet and it was engulfed in flames."San Miguel, Heartland, La Mesa firefighters and the San Diego Sheriff’s Department assisted in the emergency.The cause of the fire remains under investigation.  636
