They have posed challenges in the U.S. for government leaders and health officials whose guidelines are sometimes challenged as encroachments on religious liberty. NEW YORK -- A suspended NYPD officer is now facing criminal charges after using an apparent chokehold during a now-viral arrest in Queens last Sunday.Officer David Afanador has been charged with attempted aggravated strangulation and strangulation in the second degree, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said Thursday.The 39-year-old cop, who has a history of complaints against him, was arrested and booked at his own Queens precinct just after 9 a.m. Thursday, according to police.If convicted, Afanador faces up to seven years in prison, the DA's office said.DA Katz acknowledged that body-camera footage shows the officers being cursed at and badgered before the incident. Zeno said he was a visible wound on the back of this head.Charges against the man are pending, police said. It's not clear what the NYPD intends to charge him with, but the man's attorney said it's the suspended police officer who should be charged."He's an idiot and he's a bad cop and he needs to go," Zeno said. "He needs to get fired and needs to get prosecuted."Mayoral spokesperson Freddi Goldstein called the video "very concerning.""We’re glad the NYPD is immediately launching an investigation to get to the bottom of what happened," she said.Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said her office is also investigating."There must be zero tolerance for police misconduct," she tweeted. "The Queens District Attorney's Office is aware of the incident in Far Rockaway today. Clinton's "She Persisted in Sports: American Olympians Who Changes the Game" will be published Sept. 22 by the children's imprint Philomel Books. The latest of Clinton's best-selling "She Persisted" picture books will include sections on Wilma Rudolph, Mia Hamm, and Venus and Serena Williams. Also on Monday, Philomel announced that a new series of chapter books will feature 80-page stories on women that Clinton previously honored. The series begins in January with "She Persisted: Harriet Tubman," written by the award-winning author Andrea Davis Pinkney. 679
