SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego could become the first local police department to provide a low-cost, late-night daycare facility for officers' kids. The San Diego Police Officers Association (SDPOA) has a new plan to help struggling offers who are trying to make it in San Diego.Kelly Stinnette has two full-time jobs. She's a mother to her toddler, Landon, and she’s a detective with San Diego Police Department's Sex Crimes Unit. At times, she can be on-call for 24-hour periods.“It's a lot of anxiety and stress because you're thinking [that when] somebody's called the police [it] could be the worst day of their life and I need to be there 100% for them but still taking care of my son,” she tells 10News.To complicate matters, her husband is an SDPD SWAT officer.“With his team, they basically need to be able to respond at anytime, anywhere in the City of San Diego,” says Det. Stinnette.Parenting gets difficult when both she and her husband have to rush to work but need someone to watch Landon. “We basically have to have friends or family on backup,” she adds.“There's obviously an overwhelming need,” says Det. Jack Schaeffer with the San Diego Police Officers Association. He’s referring to the need for a special daycare for officers’ kids. He’s now working to make it a reality.“Our goal is to basically cut the cost in half or better for our members while staying open for 20 hours a day,” he tells 10News.According to a report from childcareaware.org, the cost of infant care in California averages more than ,000 a year.Det. Schaeffer adds, “Some of our members are spending around ,000 a month to have their kids watched if they have two or three kids.”The idea is that a low-cost daycare for officers’ kids would attract more applicants in a department that's faced a shortage of officers.“It not only does good things for recruiting, but for our mental wellness,” says Det. Stinnette.Det. Schaeffer's team is building the program from scratch. Initially, it'll only be available to San Diego police officers who are members of the SDPOA. “This is going to be the first big city that I know of that'll have something like this,” adds Det. Schaeffer.A location for the daycare has not been finalized. If all goes as planned, the daycare could be open within a year.The SDPOA already received a generous grant from San Diego’s Cushman Foundation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are searching for an at-risk teenager who disappeared from the Carmel Valley area on Sunday.Police say Nevaeh "Marie" Corbin, 14, was last seen at about 1:30 p.m. leaving her home on Sunday in the Carmel Valley area. Police say Corbin left on foot and said she was going for a walk at an unknown location. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans are bracing for another winter storm expected to bring rain and snow to the county Monday. The latest round of wet weather is expected to be the heaviest in San Diego County, bringing between half an inch to an inch of rain to the coast. According to the National Weather Service, parts of San Diego County could see heavy snow. The NWS says elevations will be between 5,000 to 5,500 feet for the region's mountains. Elevations above 5,500 feet could see between five and 10 inches of snow accumulation. “Highest amounts will be southeast of Big Bear in and around Mt. San Gorgonio, over Mt. San Jacinto, and over Mt. Laguna where locally up to a foot is possible,” the National Weather Service said. Meteorologists are warning about slippery roads in areas where snow is expected. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans could see a bit of relief from rising housing prices, according to a Zillow housing report.The report claims that 20 percent of listings in June saw a price cut, compared to only 12 percent of homes that had their prices cut a year ago. Similarly, the increase in home values has slowed, and is expected to see even slower growth over the next year.While the rise in home values has seen a slight decrease, they’re still on the rise. The median price in the county is now 3,700, up 6.6 percent from a year earlier."Now with prices being so high, we decided to move to Arizona where prices are more affordable," said Eric Oster, who rents an apartment in the Kearny Mesa area.Zillow expects that rate of appreciation to decline to 4.7 percent by next year. Still, the cooling home price growth is being offset by higher interest rates, which increases monthly payments. "The key is, if you're going to buy a home, the biggest question is - can I afford the payments, and if you're stretching yourself too thin it doesn't matter what the market's doing," said Bridget Potterton, a San Diego Real Estate Broker.The median home value in the US is currently 7,300.
