With health experts warning about the possibility of a "twindemic" — a bad flu season combined with COVID-19 — officials are urging everyone to help by getting a flu vaccine this fall.Lisa Rasmussen is not living the retired life that she once dreamed."I became a flu widow at age 55," she said.Four days before their 29th wedding anniversary, Rasmussen's husband Paul died at the age of 57."I had to spend the day of my anniversary in a funeral home making arrangements," she said.That was in April of 2016. Four years later, it's still painful for Lisa. She's still grieving — and she's angry."I think I'm always going to be a bit mad at him because his death was preventable and because he didn't listen to me when I tried to talk him in to getting flu vaccines," Rasmussen said.Today, Rasmussen spends her time traveling and advocating for Families Fighting Flu. The national non-profit is dedicated to increasing vaccination rates and advocating on behalf of families who have lost loved ones to influenza."Maybe it's my revenge — I shouldn't call it revenge — but it's my way of dealing with it: With the anger, frustration and grief that I have," she said. "I just don't want to see what other people to have to go through what I did."Every year on Oct. 4 — her late husband's birthday — Rasmussen gets her flu shot, in his honor.Dr. L.J Tan, the Chief strategy officer for the Immunization Action Coalition, says that most people don't get vaccinated for the flu not because they're against vaccines, but because it's not convenient."The people who adamantly refuse to get the flu vaccine is actually a small percentage for the other people who end up not getting the flu vaccine," Tan said. "A lot of time it's because flu is a vaccine of convenience."The Immunization Action Coalition is the largest private sector non-profit that helps educate and support health care providers about all immunizations, including the flu. Tan joins other experts who are worried about this year's seasonal flu."We don't want flu and we don't want COVID together and there are reasons for that," Tan said. "We have chronic diseases, chronic illness — COVID-19 will have a serious impact on you. We also know that's true of flu. If you're over 60 or 65, COVID has a serious impact on you. We know that's true of flu as well."The flu vaccine covers four strains and will either protect a person entirely or reduce their chances of contracting severe or serious influenza.Some experts believe that the 2020 flu season won't be as severe due to social distancing measures already in place. But that's not a risk Tan is willing to take."Here's the problem: If I pray for that and that outcome happens, everyone is going to tell me, 'Why are you crying chicken little? Why were we all getting vaccinated against the flu?'" Tan said. "I don't know if that's the outcome. Why are we gambling? While it's true that premiums for the popular silver Obamacare plan could shoot higher for 2018, most enrollees will actually end up paying less for coverage next year.In fact, more consumers will be able to snag policies that will cost them nothing each month.How can that be?It's because premium subsidies are soaring too, making many plans on the exchanges more affordable.The Trump administration, however, is stressing how much premiums will rise, saying this is yet another sign that Obamacare is irreparably broken. They are downplaying the fact that the subsidies will cover most, if not all, of the cost.Obamacare advocates worry that consumers will be scared off by the news that premiums are skyrocketing for next year. They plan to highlight the fact that many people will be able to find lower-premium policies thanks to the subsidies.Even the Trump administration found that Obamacare plans will be more affordable next year. Some 80% of enrollees will be able to find a policy for a month or less -- up from 71% this year and the highest share so far."This year, more people than any previous year have access to a plan for or less," said Josh Peck, a former Obama administration official and co-founder of Get America Covered, which is promoting enrollment for 2018. "That's what we want everyone to know."Here's why this is happening:Many insurers jacked up the rates of their silver plans in part to make up for President Trump ending federal support for Obamacare's cost-sharing subsidies. These subsidies reduce deductibles and co-pays for lower-income enrollees.Premiums for the benchmark silver Obamacare plan will soar 37%, on average, for 2018, according to federal data released Monday.The premium subsidies are pegged to a benchmark silver plan in each market. So if that plan's rate rises, the value of the subsidy does too. More than eight in 10 Obamacare enrollees receive premium subsidies.Insurers, however, did not hike the price of bronze or gold plans nearly as much. The rate of the lowest-cost bronze plan is rising 17%, on average, while the cheapest gold plan is going up 19%, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.That means the more generous premium subsidies will cover more of the monthly cost of these plans, so consumers will pay less.A 40-year-old earning ,000 will pay 75% less, on average, for the cheapest bronze plan and 21% less for the lowest-cost gold plan, according to a new analysis by the Kaiser Family Foundation. Silver plans will have an average deductible of just over ,000 next year.Many more consumers will be able to enroll in bronze plans and pay nothing each month. For instance, a 48-year-old consumer earning roughly ,000 can find a zero-premium policy in nearly 1,050 counties next year, up from 132 counties in 2017, according to an analysis by Oliver Wyman consulting group.Not everyone, however, will be so fortunate. Enrollees who don't qualify for premium subsidies -- those who earn more than ,000 as an individual or ,500 for a family of four in 2018 -- may be hit with the full premium hike. But that doesn’t mean kids can’t learn at home.Dorogi says children ages 3 to 5 can learn math using everyday items.“If I have five Cheerios on the table this is what five looks like and it’s a small amount compared to when I have ten Cheerios on the table,” Dorogi said.Playing with dolls or action figures can help language skills, forcing children to talk and put sentences together. West Virginia legislators scrambled Monday to see whether there is enough money to meet teacher pay demands and end a strike that has dragged into its eighth day.A legislative conference committee appointed to resolve differences between the state Senate and House is scheduled to meet at 4 p.m."We recognize the urgency of this situation," said Delegate Paul Espinosa, chair of the House Education Committee and co-chair of the conference committee on House Bill 4145, the pay raise legislation.Gov. Jim Justice and the union leaders last week agreed that teachers and service personnel would receive a 5% pay raise. The House approved the proposal, but the Senate passed a 4% raise. Union leaders say the teachers won't return to work until they get a 5% raise.Espinosa said he has been speaking with his counterpart in the Senate, Majority Leader Ryan Ferns, "on how we would like to proceed with the committee's work to resolve the differences" between the Senate and the House of Delegates.Democrats in the Legislature say new revenue projections show the money is there and that a 5% raise would amount to million more in spending than a 4% bump."This situation has evolved very quickly in recent days, and we want to make sure committee members have a full array of accurate information available to make a well-informed decision," Espinosa said.."To accomplish that, we have instructed our respective Finance Committee staffs to pull data and put together the necessary fiscal information, and have separately reached out to the Governor's Office staff to ask for more budgetary information from the executive branch."West Virginia public school teachers are continuing their strike because the Legislature didn't meet their demand for higher pay and better benefits over the weekend.
