The figure is 45 percent higher than five years ago.Health officials are particularly concerned by the hike because 30 women had stillbirths due to congenital syphilis, the highest number since 1995.STDs can cause serious health problems if untreated. Syphilis can cause permanent loss of hearing, vision, and neurological issues. Chlamydia and gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and chronic pelvic pain."STDs are preventable by consistently using condoms, and many STDs can be cured with antibiotics," said CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith. "Regular testing and treatment are very important for people who are sexually active, even for people who have no symptoms. Most people infected with an STD do not know it."Chlamydia and gonorrhea rates are highest among people under age 30, health officials said. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom and state legislative leaders have reached an agreement on a bill to temporarily protect people from evictions. Newsom announced the agreement on Friday. The bill would ban evictions for tenants who have not been able to pay their rent because of the coronavirus between the months of March and August. Tenants would have to sign a document saying they have a financial hardship because of the virus. The protections would continue beyond August if tenants can pay at least 25% of their cumulatively owed rent between Sept. 1 and Jan. 31. Evictions could resume on Feb. 1. 635

Roseanne Barr apologized after a bizarre, racist Twitter rant Tuesday morning, and then announced she's "now leaving Twitter."
