CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV)— More than three business owners in Coronado have been hit by criminals using fake 0 bills to make small purchases.Sam Frederick’s shop, Little Sam’s Island and Beach Fun on Coronado Island has all things fun. But last Saturday, fun was not on his mind, after somebody took advantage of his new employee.A man tried to buy three towels with a 0 bill. But at the last minute, he changed his mind to buy just one.“He realized that my guy was going to cash the 0 bill, so he puts two towels back, and he got more money that way,” Frederick said. MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodThe clerk took the bill, gave the man in change, and left. When Frederick checked the cash register that night, he said something was not right. “I knew right there… The Ben Franklin wasn’t in shape at all,” he said. Coronado police say he is not alone. Investigators are looking into at least three more counterfeit 0 bill incidents in the last week. Joshua Jordan owns Treasures from the Heart, next door. He too was hit. Then he pulled out a 0 the last minute, very apologetic, saying “can you break 0?” Jordan said. They did. But the incident happened not once, but twice. “He saw that it was an easy mark, went to the next store, came back again, and bought a little more to look better,” Jordan said. He did not use the change he got from the first transaction but paid with another fake 0 bill with the same serial number. The bill was immediately rejected by the bank the next day.“I know maybe to some companies, 0 is not much. But to me it really hurts,” Jordan said. As Coronado Police continues their investigation, they are also encouraging business owners to check each bill with a pen and a black light machine, ask for ID, or call them if they are suspicious. “Right now we are working in cooperation with the secret service to see if this is an isolated incident in Coronado, or part of a larger trend in San Diego as a whole,” Det. Thursday afternoon, 12 more people were stung just days after a similar incident involving 10 to 15 people Tuesday. “I’m not used to the beach I come from Arizona so like this is actually happening,” said Angelo La Rosa, who is visiting from Arizona. “It felt like something was digging into my skin,” said 13-year-old Phoenix Stofa, who was one of at least a dozen stung Thursday. RELATED: 10 to 15 people stung by stingrays in Coronado“Yeah, yeah they don’t want to get stepped on and that’s their only defense mechanism and they have a barb,” said Sgt. Damon Bassett, a lifeguard in Coronado. Basset said he feels for those who get stung. “Anytime you get some nice weather and some warm water people don’t know to shuffle their feet. Then they can come in contact and get stung.”“Don’t walk on the water like you would on land,” Bassett added. A painful lesson for some, but still a day at the beach. “I just thought of the shark movies but it wasn’t a shark alert it was just a stingray. If it was a shark alert, I would have been more,” La Rosa said. If you do happen to get stung, lifeguards say you should soak the affected area in hot water to deactivate the venom. 1291

CORSICANA, TX — Three juveniles in Texas have been arrested on felony charges after allegedly drinking from two juice bottles inside a Walmart store then putting them back on the shelves.The Corsicana Police Department says around 10 p.m. on August 23, officers were made aware of a Facebook post that showed a video of a suspect taking a drink from two separate juice bottles then putting them back on the shelves at Walmart.Walmart's management removed the products from the shelves as soon as they were made aware of the incident.All three suspects were identified and taken into custody. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) — Coronado officials warned beachgoers of two shark sightings on Sunday, almost 10 days following four other sightings.The city posted on Facebook that two white shark sightings occurred off South Beach at 9:10 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Officials added that a local surfer who reported the second sighting said the shark was possibly longer than 10 feet and seen about 50 yards offshore.Both sightings occurred near Tower 1C at Avenida de las Arenas, and the shark did not show any engaging behavior. Beachgoers were alerted Sunday and encouraged to check with lifeguards before going into the water. Sunday's sightings come nearly 10 days after Coronado said four shark sightings in two and a half hours prompted warnings. 748
