YICHANG, Hubei, July 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Three Gorges Dam on the swollen Yangtze River is experiencing another test as flood flows peaking at 56, 000 cubic meters per second, the greatest peak flood of the year, arrived at the dam at 8 a.m. Wednesday, engineers said.The dam buffered the flood by discharging water at a rate of 40,000 cubic meters per second, holding up 16,000 cubic meters in a second, they said.The water level of the reservoir behind the dam rose to 158 meters at 8 a.m. Wednesday, about 17 meters under its maximum capacity of 175 meters. Flood waters are sluiced with the water outflux monitored at 40,000 cubic meters per second at Three Gorges Dam in Yichang, central China's Hubei Province, July 20, 2010. BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- The value of the gross output of China's auto industry surged 49 percent year on year to 2.086 trillion yuan (308 billion U.S. dollars) in the first half of the year, officials at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said Monday.At the same time, total export and import volume jumped 84 percent year on year to 50.66 billion U.S. dollars, according to a MIIT statement posted on its Web site.From January to July, China's auto output and sales both exceeded 10 million units. In July, China's auto output stood at 1.29 million units, up 16 percent year on year, while sales stood at 1.24 million units, up 15 percent year on year, MIIT said.Also, the Chinese government decided in June to extend an auto replacement subsidy program by six months until Dec.31 this year.Begun in June of 2009, the subsidy aims to help get highly polluting vehicles off the road while stimulating automobile consumption.Under the program, consumers who trade-in their used small-and medium-sized trucks and some mid-sized passenger vehicles for a new one are eligible to receive a subsidy of 3,000 to 6,000 yuan.By the end of May, the Chinese government had handed out 1.7 billion yuan in subsidies for 127,000 trade-in vehicles.The subsidy program has boosted domestic automobile spending by 15 billion yuan, according to officials at China's Ministry of Commerce.

BEIJING, July 28 (Xinhuanet) -- China will end the public shaming of prostitutes by parading them through the streets, the People's Daily reported on Tuesday, following controversy over cases in which sex workers were paraded in public.Ministry of Public Security has ordered the police to stop parading suspects in public and has called on local departments to enforce laws in a "rational, calm and civilized manner," the report said.Prostitution is illegal in China and police sometimes used means such as parading prostitutes in public as a deterrent. However, recent cases have sparked controversy on the Internet.Earlier this month, local media in the city of Dongguan in southern China's Guangdong province published pictures of two suspected prostitutes and two patrons who had been detained by police. The handcuffed girls were shown walking barefoot, handcuffed and tethered by a rope around their waists.In another case this month, police in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei province, posted a public notice about a vice raid, including personal information about prostitutes and their clients.
