NANJING, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao reaffirmed during the weekend that China would unwaveringly adhere to its moderately easy monetary policy in face of economic difficulties and challengesWen said China would maintain both its proactive fiscal and moderate monetary policies, and work on economic restructuring to strengthen recovery from the global downturn.     During a three-day inspection tour that ended Sunday in the eastern Jiangsu Province, one of China's economic powerhouses, Wen said China should focus on maintaining stable and rapid economic development and accelerating economic restructuring.     China's economy still faced hardships and challenges because of the gloomy international economic outlook, he said. With weakened external demand, Chinese enterprises faced significant overcapacity, while domestic demand was still restricted by various factors.     The impact of governmental stimulation of the economy would gradually lessen and long-term policies needed time to pay off, Wen said. Therefore, China's macroeconomic policy would not change.     The premier's remarks echoed a similar announcement made by a senior economic planning official Friday that overseas market conditions were still severe and the country's economic policy direction would remain unchanged.     Although the country's economy was showing signs of recovery, it still faced many difficulties in maintaining stability, said Zhu Zhixin, vice minister in charge of the National Development and Reform Commission.     On his third visit to Jiangsu since the global financial crisis hit, Wen also praised "better-than-expected" results in eliminating pollution from the country's third largest fresh water lake Taihu over the past two years, since a blue algae outbreak in 2007.     Wen was told that more than 3,000 small chemical plants surrounding the lake had been closed and about 1,000 new facilities had been installed to treat sewage from nearby villages into the lake.

BRUSSELS, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice-President Xi Jinping urged closer cooperation between China and Belgium during a speech Friday at the China-Belgium Economic and Trade Forum.     Xi said the development of cooperation between China and Belgium has brought tangible benefits to the two countries.Despite the impact of the global financial crisis, bilateral trade volume rose 14.4 percent to 20.2 billion U.S. dollars in 2008, 1,000 times as much 38 years ago when diplomatic relations were established, he said.     The vice president advanced a three-point proposal to further strengthen bilateral cooperation. Those issues, he said, include the global financial crisis, world economic development, climate change, food and energy security, the Doha round of trade talks, and international financial structure reforms.     "I believe that the perspective of the mutual benefit cooperation between China and the EU has a better future with the joint efforts of the two sides," Xi said.     Xi also reviewed the great achievements China has made in the 60 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.     Xi stressed that there still is a long way to go for China to achieve a more prosperous society.     As a peace-loving country, Xi said, China will always continue efforts to cooperate with world countries based on the five principles of peaceful coexistence. CHANGCHUN, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has urged more efforts to ensure grain production and improve rural livelihoods to ensure fast and steady rural development.     Hui made the remark at an agricultural products fair in Changchun, capital of the northeastern Jilin Province on Tuesday, saying the government will continue to see maintaining a fast and steady rural economic development as a top task.     He called for promotion of agricultural technology and products to increase the competitiveness of China's agricultural enterprises and their products in the global market.     "The overall situation about the country's agriculture and rural development is good, and China has seen a summer grain output growth for six straight years this year", he said.     He also urged more efforts to fight drought in parts of China and "try every means" to ensure harvest this fall and a continuous rise in farmers' income.     As of Sept. 8, a severe drought has affected 19.72 million mu (1.31 million hectares) of crops in seven provinces of Hunan, Guizhou, Jiangxi, Hubei, Guangdong, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Chongqing, according to data from the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.     About 2.75 million people and about 1.20 million livestock had difficulties getting adequate water supply.

BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua)-- China and the European Union (EU) should properly cope with trade frictions, and push forward economic and trade cooperation, Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan said here Wednesday.     Wang was meeting with EU Trade Commissioner Catherine Ashton, who is on her first visit to China.     "China and the EU should appropriately handle trade frictions, and fight resolutely against trade protectionism," he said.     Since late July, the EU has launched a series of anti-dumping actions against Chinese products, covering steel wire rod, seamless steel tubes, sodium gluconate, steel cables and aluminum road wheels.     "Some of China's major trading partners have shown signs of protectionism during the global financial crisis, and there has been rising trade protectionism inside the EU," said Sun Yongfu, who is department chief in charge of European affairs of Chinese Commerce Ministry.     Vice premier Wang said the two sides' top priorities at the present time should be making efforts to continuously further coordination and cooperation, jointly tiding over the global financial crisis, and facilitating the recovery of regional and international economy. GUANGZHOU, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- One person is missing and more than a million residents affected as typhoon Koppu landed in southern China's Guangdong Province Tuesday, local authorities said.     About 1.06 million people in 69 townships in Jiangmen and Yangjiang cities were feeling the effect of the storm at 6 p.m., said Guangdong Flooding and Drought Relief Headquarters. One person in Zhuhai City is missing.     In Shenzhen City, 169 flights were delayed on Tuesday, stranding nearly 10,000 passengers.     The typhoon, the 15th this year, has brought heavy rains to Guangdong.     In Yangjiang City, where the typhoon downgraded into a strong tropical storm, fallen trees and branches could be seen along the roads.     In Sanya City in the southern island province of Hainan, the typhoon brought rain of more than 167 millimeters.     Shipping services across the southern Qiongzhou Strait, which have been suspended since Monday afternoon, were expected to resume Wednesday.     Local experts have warned of flash flooding, with the possible dangers of mudslides and landslides.     Koppu would bring heavy rain to most parts of southwestern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Hainan and Guangdong during the next two days, China's central observatory said.
