The state of Tennessee came one step closer to allowing wine sales on Sunday after state Senators voted to approve a bill which had already passed through the House. The vote passed 17-11 on Wednesday morning. Final approval will now lie in the hands of Governor Bill Haslam who needs to sign the bill in order for it to become law.   The controversial plan will allow grocery stores to sell wine on Sunday beginning January 1, 2019.It will also permit liquor stores to immediately begin operating seven days a week. However, liquor store owners argue they are at a huge competitive disadvantage against major grocery store chains, who don't need to make any staffing changes in order to be open on Sundays.  House members approved a similar plan on Monday by a vote of 53 to 35.If approved by the Governor, wine and liquor sales would be allowed from 8 a.m. to 11p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10a.m. to 11p.m. on Sunday.Tennessee first voted to allow grocery stores to sell wine back in 2016 after years of back and forth and under constant pressure from citizens and grocery store lobbyists.   1151

The White House privately warned the mayors of 11 major U.S. cities on Wednesday that they need to take "aggressive" steps to control COVID-19 outbreaks, the Center for Public Integrity reports.The warning came from Dr. Deborah Birx, the response coordinator for the White House Coronavirus Task Force. In the call, which the Center for Public Integrity included "hundreds of emergency managers and other state and local leaders," she identified 11 cities that are seeing an increase in the percentage of positive COVID-19 tests they've taken in recent weeks. Those cities were Baltimore, Cleveland, Columbus, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Miami, Minneapolis, Nashville, New Orleans, Pittsburgh and St. Louis.“When you first see that increase in test positivity, that is when to start the mitigation efforts,” she said in a recording obtained by Public Integrity. “I know it may look small and you may say, ‘That only went from 5 to 5-and-a-half [percent], and we’re gonna wait and see what happens.’ If you wait another three or four or even five days, you’ll start to see a dramatic increase in cases.”The Center for Public Integrity also published a seven-minute segment of the conference call.Public Integrity · Dr. Deborah Birx CallIt's unclear who provided the Center for Public Integrity with the recording, which was closed to the press. The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces have detained a US citizen who had been fighting with ISIS in Syria, a US military official told CNN Thursday.The official added that it appeared that the American citizen surrendered to Kurdish elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces.A spokesperson for the US-led coalition fighting ISIS would not confirm that a US citizen was in the custody of the SDF, referring questions to the US State Department."We have seen those same reports and the SDF as our partner has taken an oath to make sure that any fighters that they capture that they maintain them and bring them to the proper authorities. In this case the proper authorities would be the equivalent of the department of state in the country," Col.
