Sam is now her primary caregiver.“I have a long ways to go in getting my cooking up to where Donna was before,” Van Why said.According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. Director of Scientific Engagement Rebecca Edelmayer says the disease causes progressive memory and function loss due to nerve cell death that happens in the brain. This leads to stages of dementia.“Dementia are those symptoms that people are experiencing outwardly," Dr. Edelmayer said. "So this could be changes in their memory or their thinking. It could also be changing in their personality or some of their behaviors. Like they may have issues with depression, or agitation, or even sleep disturbances.”Currently, there’s no treatment for Alzheimer’s, but research is moving at a fast pace and Van Why is always thrilled to hear about any new discoveries.“We may not be to the point of the solved vaccine for Alzheimer’s, but these steps are tremendous,” Van Why said.Aside from treatment, preventing the disease in the first place would be substantial progress and getting a yearly flu shot could be an answer.“New research presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference suggests that flu and pneumonia vaccines may be associated with a lower risk of Alzheimer’s,” Dr. Edelmayer said.Fourth-year medical student Albert Amran made the discovery when pulling medical history of nearly 40,000 people in a national database. He says he and his colleagues at McGovern Medical School at UT Health in Houston looked at patients' charts focusing on drug history to see if anything could be repurposed to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. The influenza vaccination popped out.“What we’re thinking is happening that as people get older the people who gets shots essentially are keeping their immune systems in shape,” Amran said.However, it should be noted that this research isn’t conclusive. Amran says it’s all very new and needs to be observed in a clinical study. Edelmayer suggests the risk reduction for Alzheimer’s could even be from a completely different factor.“It’s very possible that these are indirect effects," Dr. Edelmayer said. "That people who are getting vaccinated also take care of their health in other ways. And things could really add to a lower risk of Alzheimer’s and other dementias.”Amran says the next step is seeing if these findings can be confirmed in different populations. In the meantime, families feeling the effects of Alzheimer’s are doing what they can to help the ones they love while waiting for a treatment or cure.“I am trying my best to stay in the house or with Sam. During a quarterly call with shareholders Wednesday, Papa John's CEO John Schnatter cited national anthem protests in the NFL as one of the reasons for the company's falling stock price.According to ESPN, Schnatter also took veiled shots at NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for not putting a stop to the anthem protests."Leadership starts at the top and this is an example of poor leadership," Schnatter said. (KGTV) - An El Cajon man says a new spinal procedure changed his life, but the Army veteran is now locked in a battle with his military health insurance plan which refuses to cover it.Ronald Maddern says he can't understand why TRICARE, his secondary insurance, would deny coverage of the procedure after his primary insurance, Medicare, agreed to cover 80 percent of the cost. Both insurance plans are run by the federal government."Makes me feel like a second-rate citizen after I served in the military for so many years," he said.The denial by TRICARE left him with a bill of ,756.Maddern had the Vertiflex procedure in 2017 to treat spinal stenosis, which had largely confined him to a wheelchair for 17 years. Maddern is now able to walk with help from a cane for balance."It was a drastic success," said the 71-year-old. "My quality of life now is very, very good."The procedure, developed by a Carlsbad company, was approved by the FDA in 2015. It has been performed thousands of times across the country, said Maddern's surgeon Dr. Michael Verdolin."It is extremely frustrating that one arm of the government says yes and the other portion, really the pinky, says no," he said.In a letter of denial, TRICARE argued Vertiflex is an "unproven procedure," despite its FDA approval."There have been 15,000 cases across the US. It's been cleared for use," Verdolin said. "There is no question to be asked about its efficacy."TRICARE did not immediately respond to requests for comment by 10News.Ronald Maddern's insurance case is now before an administrative law judge. He's hoping the judge's ruling will convince TRICARE to conform its benefits with other federal agencies, so more veterans can get the procedure. 1746

(KGTV)- An El Cajon family says the least valuable items stolen during a recent burglary are the ones they most desperate to get back.  Last Friday, Shannon Torres returned to her home along Murray Drive around noon with her 3-year-old son. "Her heart dropped. She was terrified," said husband Omar Torres.Torres says she found the front unlocked and the French doors leading into the family room open."They had kicked it open and splintered it up near the top," he said.Inside the house, the bedroom drawers were open and Shannon's jewelry boxes were gone and along with them, dozens of pieces of jewelry.Among the missing items: a pearl necklace from her aunt that Shannon wore at her wedding, diamond earrings from her husband for their anniversary, and a silver-and-gold bird necklace. The latter was a Mother's Day present. The couple have three sons, ages eight, six and three."It's very sad. Heartbreaking," said Torres.That feeling was made more intense when they realized what else was in the jewelry boxes: a yellow-and-white flash drive on a key ring and a black SanDisk memory stick. On them were the birth videos of their sons, along with videos and stills of each of their first year of life."It was a tremendous time we want to be able to relive and now we can't on those videos.
