SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Union workers rallied Wednesday across California after notices went out to hundreds of University of California workers who will be temporarily laid off.About 200 University of California, San Diego Housing, Dining and Hospitality employees will be temporarily laid off during the summer months."Like many other organizations, UC San Diego is facing financial losses as a result of the pandemic. In particular, Housing, Dining and Hospitality saw an 85% reduction in undergraduate housing for the 2020 spring quarter, and a 90% cancellation in summer season occupancy. HDH implemented numerous cost saving measures, including hiring freezes and project deferments, but due to a substantial decrease in summer duties, HDH made the difficult decision to place some of their staff members on temporary layoff for the summer months. We understand the pain and uncertainty this will cause during an already trying time. However, we must acknowledge and respond to the challenges our campus is facing, operationally and financially, as a result of the pandemic," a representative from UCSD said.While these employees mainly work with students, serving food, UCSD Health employees are concerned this is the tip of the iceberg and more layoffs are coming."I don't want to lose my benefits, I work too hard and I deserve it," Teri Taylor said. She was hired at 20-years-old and is now a Nursing Assistant."For me to be able to branch out on my own and make something of myself is amazing." Taylor said she grew up in a low income neighborhood and faced adversity.She's a member of local labor union AFSCME 3299.The union started the day with a cacophony of honking in the UCSD chancellor's neighborhood.Then, at noon they held rallies at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest and Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla."We come here day in and day out and do the work basically and to know that we can be let go at any time, it's scary, it's sad. We're in the middle of a pandemic," Taylor said."You don't have to lay people off, there's work here, there's work at other campuses. This is a UC system throughout the state," she added.The University said, "DH has a tremendous appreciation for the dedication and contribution of their staff. Our hope is that the impacted employees—and the students they serve—can return to campus. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two inmate deaths in San Diego detention facilities this year are being attributed to drug overdoses and called accidental.The first occurred on July 20 at the San Diego Central Jail, where Michael Hossfeld, 41, was found unresponsive in his cell, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department. Deputies began life-saving measures and Hossfeld was taken to a nearby hospital, where he remained in a coma and on life support until Aug. 3.The county medical examiner this week determined Hossfeld had died from anoxic encephalopathy due to acute fentanyl toxicity and ruled his death an accident.Hossfeld had been in custody for 691 days and was charged with multiple crimes, including robbery.On Aug. 26, deputies at George Bailey Detention Facility found Jose Sevilla, 39, unresponsive in his cell. Deputies began CPR, but he was pronounced dead shortly after he was found.The medical examiner report said that Sevilla died from acute heroin intoxication and his death was also deemed an accident.Sevilla had been in jail since May 30 on drug- and theft-related charges.SDSO did not provide any further information regarding the deaths.According to the Associated Press, there have been at least 13 in-custody deaths in San Diego jails this year. 1275

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two men are dead after a shooting near a Mountain View park Sunday afternoon. Two black men, ages 33 and 37, were shot in the upper body, San Diego Police said. Both men died at the hospital.The shooting happened around 1:20 p.m. Sunday near South 40th Street and Ocean View Boulevard. Police said the victims were standing near the Mountain View Community Center when they were shot.The suspect is described as a black man wearing dark clothing.South 40th Street was closed between Teak Street and Hemlock Street while police investigated the crime.The circumstances leading up to the shooting are not known.Anyone with information is asked to call the homicide unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 776

San Diego (KGTV)- A local middle and high school team sweep a popular robotics competition beating out groups from all over the world.They call themselves “Team Inspiration.” The group of students has been working with robotics for nearly ten years.The team is comprised of six different schools in San Diego, including: Del Norte High, Scripps Ranch High, Rancho Bernardo High, Westview High, The Cambridge School, and Black Mountain Middle School.Last month the team competed in the 2020 International RoboSub Competition. Each team had to build an underwater robot.“The basic tasks include going underwater, seeing and recognizing images underwater, and going to wave points underwater,” says team member Colin Szeto.This Is the second year the group participated in the competition. Due to COVID-19, the competition was done virtually this time around.“It was a pretty good equalizer because we all got the same zoom playing field,” says Aditya Mavalankar.The student updated their robot design from last year and built an additional robot for the competition.“The idea was that both of them would go in the water together to distribute the tasks so that we could have more of an advantage,” says Ashiria Goel.The students also built the sensor navigation parts on the devices. It can “basically tell how far it is from other objects,” says Mavalankar. “We have cameras on multiple sides of the robots. We have hydrophones that’’s able to create an acoustic pinger in the pool.”Team Inspiration took home first place in the overall competition, technical design, and website. The team came in second place in the video presentation category.Team inspiration is the only middle and high school team to ever win the world title in RoboSub’s 23-year history. 1767
