Prosecutors rested their case Monday afternoon in the trial against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. This comes after 10 days of testimony from 27 witnesses. The defense has not indicated if it will call any witnesses to the stand.Prior to the prosecution resting, a bank official testified that the Federal Savings Bank gave Manafort million in loans and knew that he lied about his financial situation before they were approved by the bank's chairman.James Brennan, a vice president of Federal Savings Bank, said he faced so much pressure from his bank's chairman about Manafort's ability to borrow the million that he lied on a form reviewed by federal regulators and the bank's directors about the stability of the loan."If I had my recommendation ... the loan would not be made," Brennan said in court Monday.Brennan, who wrote a memorandum about a second .5 million loan the bank extended to Manafort, said he had given the loan a rating of "4." But in court Monday, he said he shouldn't have done that.A very stable, high-quality loan would get a rating of "1," and any rating less than "4" wouldn't get approved and would draw regulators' attention because of its instability, he said. When asked by prosecutors why the loan received a 4 rating, Brennan said it was because of "Mr. Calk," referring to the bank's founder, Stephen Calk."It closed because Mr. Calk wanted it to close," Brennan said, referring to one of the loans.Last week, the jury heard testimony that Calk approved the loans as he sought Manafort's help in getting a high-ranking position in the Trump administration.Brennan also said he and his colleagues documented their concerns about Manafort's personal finances. Information about Manafort's company's income, his unpaid debts from his Yankees season ticket and undisclosed mortgages on his other properties in New York raised red flags internally at the bank, he added.Brennan was the 27th prosecution witness to testify against Manafort in the first major test in court for special counsel Robert Mueller, who is currently leading an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.Manafort has been charged with 18 tax and banking crimes. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.Prosecutors pulled up an email that Brennan sent to colleagues who sat on the bank's loan-approving committee in September 2016. The email detailed some of "the issues we were having" regarding one of Manafort's loan applications, Brennan said.Brennan also described how he asked Stephen Calk's brother, John Calk, another major Federal Savings Bank shareholder, to sign off on the loans to Manafort, but John Calk refused. In all, the bank lost .8 million on the loans it made to Manafort, Brennan said. 2763

President Donald Trump suggested Friday that the federal government could play a role in a possible recount of Florida's close Senate and gubernatorial races."If you look at Broward and Palm Beach (counties) to a lesser extent ... they have had a horrible history," Trump told reporters at the White House before departing for Paris."And if you look at the person, in this case a woman, involved -- she has had a horrible history," Trump said. It was unclear to whom Trump was referring, but Republican Gov. Rick Scott, the Republican candidate for Senate, has called the female election supervisors in Broward and Palm Beach counties "unethical liberals.""All of a sudden they are finding votes out of nowhere," Trump said of the Senate race. The President said Scott had "won by a comfortable margin," but accused Democrats of attempting to pad their margins."Every couple of hours, it goes down a little bit," Trump said of Scott's lead.Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson has pushed for a recount given that he trails Scott by such a slim margin. If the candidates in either contest are separated by 0.5% of the vote or less, the state will automatically recount ballots.Trump tweeted Thursday evening that reported irregularities in Broward and Palm Beach counties amounted to "another big corruption scandal having to do with election fraud."The President said officials involved in the "phony dossier" about his campaign's contacts with Russia are involved in the recount efforts. He was likely referring to Marc Elias, the lawyer Nelson's campaign has reportedly tapped to handle the recount effort, as Elias was also a lawyer for Hillary Clinton's campaign and was involved in commissioning that dossier of opposition research from Fusion GPS.The race for governor between GOP Rep. Ron DeSantis and Democratic Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum is also close enough that a recount is possible.The-CNN-Wire 1910

Rescuers are searching for crew members aboard two US Marine planes that collided mid-air off the coast of Japan in the early hours of Thursday morning, according to Japan's Ministry of Defense and the US Marine Corps. At least one Marine was killed in the crash and the body has been recovered, the Marine Corps said in a statement. A second Marine was rescued and is described to be in fair condition. Five other Marines remain missing. The KC-130 and F/A-18 collided at 1:42 a.m. local time, according to a Japanese Defense Ministry statement.According to a statement from the US Marine Corps, the crash happened during an aerial refueling that was part of a routine training. The primary mission of a KC-130 is airborne refueling. It is believed five crew were on board the KC-130 and two on the F/A-18 at the time of the crash, two US defense officials told CNN.First Lt. Josh Hayes, a public affairs officer with the 3rd Marines Expeditionary Forces based out of Okinawa, told CNN the rescued Marine was in "fair condition."The killed Marine was found by a Japanese military ship at 12:13 p.m. local time and was being transferred to a mainland medical facility, according to Japanese defense spokesperson Norio Harada.Japan has dispatched 10 aircraft and three ships from its Self Defense Force and Coast Guard to help with the search for five people still believed to be missing. The US 7th Fleet said in a statement that it was supporting ongoing search and rescue efforts with a Navy P-8A Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft flying out of Kadena Air Force Base.Rescue teams are battling bad weather which has passed through the area in the last 24 hours or so, bringing showers, storms and sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph."The weather is definitely going to play a factor," said Hayes. "It's a full team effort between us and the Japanese defense force. And we're hoping to get our Marines back."The crash happened approximately 200 miles (321 kilometers) off the coast of Iwakuni, Japan, a US Marine Corps official told CNN.The planes "had launched from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni and were conducting regularly scheduled training when the mishap occurred," according to a statement from the US Marine Corps.Wednesday's incident comes on the same day that the Marines released a report on a crash in July 2017, also involving a KC-130 variant that killed 15 Marines and one sailor. That KC-130T crash took place in Leflore County, Mississippi, and the "investigation determined that the aircraft's propeller did not receive proper depot-level maintenance during its last overhaul ... in September 2011, which missed corrosion that may have contributed to the propeller blade" coming loose during the flight and going into the aircraft's fuselage, according to a Marine Corps statement on the investigation.The-CNN-Wire 2845

Researchers in Thailand have been trekking though the countryside to catch bats in their caves in an effort to trace the murky origins of the coronavirus.Initial research has already pointed to bats as the source of the virus that has afflicted more than 20.5 million people and caused the deaths of over 748,000 worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University data. The closest match to the coronavirus has been found in horseshoe bats in Yunnan in southern China.Thailand has 19 species of horseshoe bats but researchers said they have not yet been tested for the new coronavirus.Thai researchers hiked up a hill in Sai Yok National Park in the western province of Kanchanaburi to set up nets to trap some 200 bats from three different caves. The team from the Thai Red Cross Emerging Infectious Diseases-Health Science Center took saliva, blood and stool samples from the bats before releasing them. They worked through the night and into the next day, taking samples not only from horseshoe bats but also from other bat species they caught in order to better understand pathogens carried by the animals. The team was headed by Supaporn Wacharapluesadee, the center’s deputy chief, who has studied bats and diseases associated with them for more than 20 years. He was part of the group that helped Thailand confirm the first COVID-19 case outside China in January. She believes it is likely they will find in Thailand’s bats the same virus that causes COVID-19.“The pandemic is borderless,” she said. “The disease can travel with bats. It could go anywhere.” 1567

Puppies being rescued in Seattle quickly became rescuers for panicking airline passengers. The dogs were on the way to Detroit when an airline employee stole a plane at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, resulting in the delay of several outbound flights. A Michigan volunteer was stuck at the airport with the nine puppies, which brought peace to a chaotic situation.“We knew something was happening at the airport, we didn’t really know,” said Steve Heim, a Detroit Metro Airport employee. Heim volunteers with an animal rescue and was in Seattle Friday to bring nine Spanish greyhound puppies to metro Detroit. He was taking a red-eye and quickly realized something was wrong at the airport. An airline employee had stolen a plane on what officials say was a suicide mission. “I said ‘uh-oh this is not good,’” Heim said. He knew his flight and many other flights would be delayed due to the incident. But he was traveling alone, caring for nine puppies at the airport, waiting for the next flight which was more than six hours later. “People were yelling and screaming at all the customer service agents," Heim said. "People were crying. There were thousands of people in the airport.”That's when the puppies came out of the crate and Heim said passengers flocked to them for comfort. “It was nice because nobody will remember what they were really there for just a moment or what had happened,” Heim said.A GoFundMe page has been set up for the puppies here: www.gofundme.com/spanish-galgo-rescueFor more information on Serenity Animal Hospital, visit www.serenityanimalhospital.net. 1649
