SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police said Wednesday officers detained a woman who reportedly had a shotgun in the parking lot of the department's headquarters.Police said a woman drove into the parking lot just before 12:30 p.m. One department employee saw she was armed with a shotgun, police said.Officers quickly surrounded the woman's vehicle and a Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT) was on hand to assess and provide support to the woman, SDPD added.Within about 10 minutes, the police said the woman was detained. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several women appeared in San Diego County Court to recall the interactions they had with Juan Carlos Cordero, the man they claim raped them. San Diego Police arrested 35-year-old Cordero in March for multiple felony sex crimes beginning in 2015. Police said he would approach intoxicated women at bars or online, take them back to his home, and rape them. One by one, the women came into the courtroom Wednesday, to answer questions at the preliminary hearing. The accusers said admittedly, some of the details of what happened are foggy."I'm not sure," one woman replied. "I honestly don't remember, but I was embarrassed that I didn't remember," said another. "I felt like ... I was drugged," another woman said. One woman said she met Cordero after posting on a singles advertisement on Craigslist. She was hoping for a pleasant interaction but said it turned horrific. She said she did everything Cordero told her to do, fearing for her life."He threatened me with spanks with the belt, a weapon," she said. Another woman said she met Cordero on a dating site when she was 18. She admitted lying to her father about Cordero, saying he was a person she knew. But after drinking a few beers in San Diego County, she said Cordero drove her to his home in Newport Beach. "I don't remember very much until I woke up to him yelling at me that I was being too loud, and that I was like every other girl and that I was going to wake up his neighbors," she recalled. After that interaction, she demanded Cordero drive her back to San Diego. In fear that her parents would scold her, she said she did not tell them what had happened, until a few hours later. On the drive home, she remembered that Cordero punched her face repeatedly."I grabbed the steering wheel and yanked it on the freeway," she said. "He [Cordero] got off at the next exit, and I ran into the Denny's."She then had her father pick her up at the restaurant in San Clemente. The following day, she said she went into a hospital to take a drug and rape kit.Another accuser said last fall, she and Cordero went on what started as a nice first date. But she ended up unconscious and woke up in pain."I noticed welts on the back of my butt, I guess," she said. Tearing up, she said she was too embarrassed to report the incident because the two continued to date. After they broke up, she said she read an article about Cordero and his alleged victims. That is when she decided to go to the police and tell her own story."He choked me until the point where I couldn't breathe," she said. "And I asked him to stop." "And what did he say?" prosecutor Martin Doyle said. "That he could end me right then and no one would know," she replied. Cordero's attorneys said their client is innocent, and the interactions he had with the women were consensual. 2835

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Since the start of the pandemic, there have been more than 240 community outbreaks in San Diego County. But despite calls from the public, county leaders continue to keep the exact locations secret. After public records requests from news outlets, the county released a list this week showing all the confirmed outbreaks until Sept. 1.The list reveals one outbreak at a San Diego business led to 175 infections. Another outbreak at a Chula Vista adult day care was linked to three deaths. But the addresses and business names are redacted. Many ABC 10News viewers have said they would like detailed information about the location of outbreaks to better inform decisions on where they visit. The county has resisted those calls, citing several reasons. The first reason has to do with contact tracing. County leaders say tracers often encounter people who are reluctant to provide information out of concern it will harm their business or organization. They say it’s useful tracers are able to assure people the business names will be kept confidential.“Contact tracing only works when those that are being interviewed are completely honest and forthcoming with relevant information,” the county wrote in a letter attached to the public records request.“Releasing the names of these locations and the addresses will have a chilling effect on the open communication necessary to ensure the Public Health Officer is able to effectively combat active outbreaks,” the county added.Los Angeles County does it differently. Health officials there post the names and addresses of all outbreak locations at workplaces, food, and retail stores. An outbreak is defined as three or more cases among members of different households who visited the same location within a 14-day period.San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said LA’s approach is unique.“LA does not have the capacity to do the contact tracing investigations the way that we do them,” she said in a press conference last month. “If you call any other health department in Southern California, no other health department does what LA does.”At times, San Diego County has identified the locations of outbreaks, including announcing in late July an outbreak at a fitness facility called The Gym in Pacific Beach. At the time, The Gym was defying public health orders, but has since gotten permission to reopen.San Diego County has also revealed locations of outbreaks from other diseases. In 2017, the county identified a Pacific Beach restaurant where there was a Hepatitis A outbreak. It regularly names schools with cases of tuberculosis.“We would release or have a press release related to an outbreak if there was additional information that the public would need to take actions,” Dr. Wooten said.County officials say they only reveal locations when they need help identifying people who may be exposed. In many cases, by the time an outbreak is confirmed, the county says the active threat is over. That’s because on average, the list reveals it takes 25 days to confirm the presence of three or more cases.“In most instances, the outbreak location information is reported and added to this list well after the outbreak has already taken place, so releasing the names now would do little to protect the public, especially when the business is cooperating with the Public Health Officer, exposed individuals have been notified, and measures have been taken to mitigate the risk of an additional outbreak,” the county said in its letter explaining the redactions in the public records request. Then there’s a privacy argument. County leaders say that in some cases revealing locations would make it easy to determine the people who had fallen ill. Finally, Dr. Wooten said she doesn’t want the public to get the impression that the virus is only contained in locations where outbreaks have occurred. When there's an outbreak of another disease, cases tend to be very localized. COVID-19 is different, she said.“The virus is widespread. People should not get false complacency,” said Dr. Wooten. 4079

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld San Diego is being allowed to reopen, but certain parts of the park will have to remain closed, a San Diego County spokesman said.A county spokesman told ABC 10News that the park is being allowed to reopen under California’s guidance for zoos.SeaWorld San Diego will be able to open its outdoor areas of the park, but indoor areas -- such as its aquariums -- and rides will not be open to guests under the specific zoo guidance.Under the zoo guidance, the park will have to post a Safe Reopening Plan like other businesses. It remains unknown when the park will officially reopen; SeaWorld San Diego officials did not immediately respond to ABC 10News’ request for comment. The park has been closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The park's website states that for season passholders, tickets will be extended as long as the closure lasted. The company’s most recent earnings report revealed troubling numbers from the second quarter and first six months of 2020, including revenue down 96 percent compared to the same time last year.Parents around San Diego said the news is a welcome sign after a summer of closures. Raquel Cusi said her four kids ask when they can go back to SeaWorld on a daily basis."For me I feel like I’ve been born and raised in San Diego, SeaWorld is a staple, and the fact that we can’t be there is sad, so I think it’ll be really awesome for San Diego families," said Cusi.Claudia Harris is a mom of three and said her kids love going to see the killer whales. In a zoom call, the kids all shared their excitement."I’m so excited to watch the killer whale show because the whales are so cool," said her son, while holding a whale toy.SeaWorld is joining the San Diego Zoo and the USS Midway in partial reopenings, but a LEGOLAND spokesperson said they have not been told when that park will reopen. LEGOLAND General Manager Kurt Stocks said, in a statement, “LEGOLAND California Resort is ready and eager to open once the state and county guidelines are given. All health and safety guidelines that have been approved for other San Diego attractions can easily be observed at our Park even if it means closing the very few indoor attractions.” 2219

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's District Attorney's Office Wednesday says the officer who fatally shot a man who had attacked another person with a machete in Southcrest acted in self defense. After review the case and officer's actions, DA Summer Stephen's office says Officer Corey Pitts, who fired upon Vaughn Denham on Aug. 8, 2018, is not criminally liable for the shooting.Denham, 48, has reportedly attacked another person with a machete during an argument over a dog chain. After Pitts responded, Denham ran up to his patrol car and swung a four-foot metal chain at the vehicle, the DA's office says.RELATED:Police investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in SouthcrestNeighbors say deadly shooting in Southcrest started because of a machete attackSDPD officer named in shooting of man suspected of Southcrest attackStephen's office says Pitts ordered Denham to drop the chain and Denham refused while continuing to walk toward the officer, swinging the chain. Pitts used a Taser but it didn't stop Denham, forcing Pitts to retreat for a block and a half while he continued to order Denham to drop the chain and get on the ground. The DA's office added Pitts warned Denham he would shoot if he continued to refuse. Pitts eventually fired two rounds, striking Denham.Denham later died at the hospital. The Stephen's office says a toxicology report showed phencyclidine (PCP), cannabinoids, and methamphetamine in his system."Based on these circumstances, Pitts fired at Denham in his own defense," the office's review states. "He therefore bears no state criminal liability for his actions."In addition to clearing Pitts of any criminal wrongdoing, the DA's office released nearly two minutes of body camera footage from the incident. 1751
