BOSTON (AP) — Actress Lori Loughlin and her fashion designer husband, Mossimo Giannulli, will be able to continue using a law firm that recently represented the University of Southern California, which is an alleged victim in the sweeping college admissions bribery case, a federal judge allowed Tuesday. But Magistrate Judge M. Page Kelley declined to rule on a different potential conflict of interest in the couple's legal representation and said she would decide later, calling it more serious.Giannulli, who created the Mossimo clothing brand, and Loughlin, who starred on TV's "Full House," mostly sat quietly through the brief proceedings in Boston federal court. They spoke up only to answer a series of short answer questions from the judge, acknowledging they each understood the legal risk of retaining the firms and the risks of being represented by the same firm. Neither commented after the hearing. The couple are accused of paying 0,000 to have their two daughters labeled as recruits to the USC crew team, even though neither participated in the sport. They have pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit fraud and money laundering.Lawyers for the Los Angeles-based Latham & Watkins law firm, which Loughlin and Giannulli have retained for representation, said Tuesday that it represented USC in an unrelated real estate case that had been handled by different lawyers.Prosecutors had argued that retaining the firm could pose a serious conflict, especially if the firm's lawyers questioned USC officials at trial or gathered information from the university during the case's discovery phase. But in court Tuesday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Rosen acknowledged that USC, as of this month, was no longer a client.Instead, he argued, there is a potentially greater conflict with Giannulli's additional counsel from the firm Donnelly, Conroy & Gelhaar. The firm represents Davina Isackson, who, along with her husband, California real estate developer Bruce Isackson, has pleaded guilty to paying 0,000 in shares of stock to get their daughters into USC and the University of California Los Angeles. They are one of the few parents cooperating with prosecutors."I don't really see how it could work," Rosen said.George Vien, an attorney for the firm, said it is prepared to take steps to prevent conflicts of interest, such as not cross-examining Isackson in the unlikely event she is asked to testify in Giannulli's case.Judge Kelley said she would decide later on that potential conflict, a type that is "typically considered to be the most serious.""This is the situation where judges most often remove lawyers from cases, if they are representing someone who is cooperating against another person," Kelley told Giannulli. At least four other parents have also hired law firms that work for USC, and at least two have chosen lawyers that have done work for Georgetown University, another alleged victim. So far, such arrangements have generally been allowed as long as parents are aware of the potential conflicts.Tuesday's hearing was just the second court appearance for Loughlin and Giannulli following an initial briefing April 3. They join 17 other parents fighting federal charges in the bribery case.Fifteen others have already agreed to plead guilty, including "Desperate Housewives" star Felicity Huffman.A total of 51 people have been charged in the case, which prosecutors say is the biggest admissions scandal ever prosecuted in the U.S. It involves prestigious schools across the country and has also embroiled prominent college coaches. Many of the parents are accused of paying an admissions consultant to bribe coaches in exchange for helping their children get into schools as fake athletic recruits. Some others paid the consultant to bribe exam administrators to allow someone else to take tests for their children, authorities say. 3894

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — At least two protesters were struck by a vehicle Monday during a demonstration against racism in Bloomington. The incident happened around 9 p.m. Monday in the area of 6th and Walnut in Bloomington near the Monroe County Courthouse as the protest was wrapping up.Hundreds of people had been taking part in a rally and protest march through Bloomington in response to an alleged racist attack at nearby Lake Monroe over the weekend. In that incident, which was caught on video, several men attack and allegedly threatened to lynch Vauhxx Booker, a Monroe County Human Rights commissioner.Geoff Stewart was one of the two people struck by the vehicle during Monday's protest."A woman driving the vehicle came up to the stop and had started revving her engine toward us, and we tried to stop her and let her know that the crowd is clearing up," Stewart said. "But, she and her passenger both wanted to go right away, so they started to push. They pushed into the woman that was with me and when she pushed again both of us went on the vehicle."Stewart said when the driver started to accelerate, the woman he was with ended up on the hood of the vehicle, and he ended up hanging off the driver's side of the vehicle."I was just trying to block her vision so she would slow down, so I tried to pull myself as far in her way to obstruct her view," Stewart said. "She drove through red lights and made her turn up here that threw both of us off the car."One protester was transported to the hospital with injuries, and another was checked at the scene. The extent of their injuries is currently not known. This story was originally published by Cameron Ridle on WRTV in Indianapolis. 1704

BERLIN (AP) — Holocaust survivors are lending their voices to a campaign targeting Facebook head Mark Zuckerberg, urging him to take action to remove denial of the Nazi genocide from the social media site. Coordinated by the New York-based Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, the #NoDenyingIt campaign launched Wednesday uses Facebook itself to make the survivors’ entreaties to Zuckerberg heard with one video per day being posted urging him to remove Holocaust denying groups, pages and posts as hate speech. Facebook says it already takes down Holocaust denial posts in countries where it is illegal and elsewhere removes “any post that celebrates, defends, or attempts to justify the Holocaust.” 725

BELDING, Mich. — We’ve all likely experienced delays with the post office, but probably not like this. A Belding, Michigan, woman says she just got a postcard on Tuesday that was postmarked 100 years ago.“Yea, that’s a little too slow,” Brittany Keech said about a potential USPS delay in delivering a postcard. When she walked to her mail on Tuesday, she had no idea what she was about to find.“It was sitting right on top of the mail,” she said.It was an old Halloween postcard that was possibly lost in the mail.“I start looking at it and I’m like, ‘Okay, it’s been through some wear and tear,'" she said. You can see just how old it is. There’s a George Washington one-cent stamp in the corner, and a postmark of October 29, 1920.Keech talked about the front of the card that fits with this time of year.“It shows a witch with a cat and and a goose and an owl and says, ‘Halloween greetings. Which would you rather be? A goose or a pumpkin head?’" Keech said. The writing is old and in cursive and addressed to a Roy McQueen on Division Street. The note says:Dear Cousins,Hope this will find you all well. We are quite well but mother has awful lame knees. It is awful cold here. I just finished my history lesson and am going to bed pretty soon. My father is shaving and my mother is telling me your address. I will have to close for a night. Hope grandma and grandpa are well. Don’t forget to write us - Roy get his pants fixed yet.Flossie BurgessKeech posted the letter on the “Positively Belding” page on Facebook and it already has more than 100 comments and dozens of shares. She hopes out of all those views someone can put her in touch with a relative to get it to the family.“This might be something that their parents can say, ‘Yeah, I remember when your great-great grandma would tell me stories.’”KeechKeech says if she can’t find the family, she’s going to try and get it put into the museum in Belding.A USPS spokesperson said, “In most cases these incidents do not involve mail that had been lost in our network and later found. What we typically find is that old letters and postcards – sometimes purchased at flea markets, antique shops and even online – are re-entered into our system. The end result is what we do best – as long as there is a deliverable address and postage, the card or letter gets delivered.”This article was written by Ryan Cummings for WXMI. 2388
