SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Veterans looking for a job during the Coronavirus Pandemic are learning to use virtual job fairs to grow their careers."It's sometimes difficult, but overall it's been a positive experience," says Army Veteran Steven Padilla, who has been looking for a job since March."You can only do so much interacting. You can't shake hands. You can't wait in line for a conversation."Padilla says his job search has been more difficult since the Pandemic hit. Companies have stopped hiring or removed job postings.He's not alone in looking for a job. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Veteran Unemployment skyrocketed during the Pandemic, peaking at 11.8% in April. That means more people competing for fewer positions.But RecruitMilitary.com, the Army's primary contractor for helping service members transition from the Army to civilian employment, says there are still plenty of jobs. They're hosting multiple virtual job fairs every week to help veterans find one."It's really just a way to dip your toes in the water and visiting a lot of companies," says Chris Stevens, the Vice President of RecruitMilitary.com.He says the company has gone from holding about 15 virtual job fairs each year to more than 130 planned for 2020."It's just like any other typical chat room," Stevens says. "Candidates and companies can go into private chats. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two competing plans are on the table to redevelop the Tailgate Lot a block from Petco Park into a mixed-use area with park space, retail and office, and housing.Wednesday San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer will announce the winning proposal to redevelop a portion of downtown’s East Village Quarter.The Tailgate Lot property includes 15 parcels of land, or about 5.25 net acres, between K Street and Imperial Avenue and 12th Ave. and 14th St.One of the plans was developed by Brookfield Properties and the other between the San Diego Padres, Tishman Speyer, and Ascendent Capital. Both plans call for a combination of office, retail, and residential space and open park space and parking.Brookfield Properties' plan calls for about 1.2 million square feet of mixed-use office and retail space, about 1,200 residential units, and 1.1 acres of park and community space. The plan also highlights developing a tailgate park, "bazaar" marketplace, and a gateway to public transit.The plan by the Padres, Tishman Speyer, and Ascendent Capital also features about 1.35 million square feet of office space, 612 market rate and affordable housing units, 236,000 square feet of open space, and 1,600-space parking garage for games and ballpark events.The parking garage would also include a multi-use field on the roof for recreational activities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Someone sliced through the window of an Ocean Beach resident's vehicle but thankfully couldn't get it to start.Now he's worried about who they might hit next. "So we look out for each other so the idea that someone would come overnight steps from where I sleep, steps from where my kids sleep, you know and try to steal your car, it's angering," David Levine said.An anger that probably won't go away until Levine gets the window on his jeep fixed. "I put tape over it already but there are two big slices here and then a slice here," Levine said.Someone sliced into his 1999 Jeep Wrangler, but Levine knows it could've been much worse."There's bent metal. It looks like they tried to take a screwdriver to turn it over," Levine said. "So I got lucky." Levine is lucky because he still has his Jeep. His neighbor doesn't.  904

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two local hikers are back in San Diego and after making a bizarre discovery on a remote trail in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.On a beautiful day two weeks ago, Tyler Hofer and Brandon Follin were in their second day of a hike up Mt. Williamson, the state's second's highest peak."Very remote, very rugged," said Hofer.The 14,000-foot summit was just three hours away when they got a bit off track in a boulder-filled area near a lake."It's called the Williamson Bowl. It's a bowl at the foot of Mt. Williamson," said Hofer.Inside the rocky bowl, the two were stepping across boulders when something caught Hofer's eye."I look down and see what appears to be a different color rock. Instead of gray, it's white," said Hofer.Wedged under a small boulder was a human skull."We just start removing rocks about one to two feet in diameter," said Hofer.Under those rocks was a skeleton, mostly intact."The arms were crossed on its chest ... as if you were lying in a casket or coffin ... almost as if someone laid it there peacefully," said Hofer. Also buried in the rocks: the remnants of a leather belt and rubber shoes. "In shock and in awe of what we found and the context in which we found it," said Hofer.The two reached the summit to get cell service and reported their findings to Inyo County deputies. Investigators say there are no signs of foul play and no matches to any missing persons reports. Based on the state of decomposition, the coroner believes the skeleton is several decades old."I'm just honored to be part of uncovering this mystery, because that's what it is," said Hofer.Hofer, a local youth pastor, is hopeful the discovery will lead to answers."That gives me a lot of joy knowing someone is going to get closure. That is someone's loved one," said Hofer.Investigators say they're following up on tips that have poured in. They also plan to conduct DNA tests, before matching results against genealogy databases.
