SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Each year around this time, we marvel as gray whales make their way from Alaska down to Baja, Mexico, to give birth. However, this year's migration started late. "This year, with the migration being so late, a lot of the moms aren't actually making it to the lagoon before they give birth. So we're seeing a lot of these pregnant females giving birth on the migration this year," said Captain Domenic Biagini, founder of Gone Whale Watching San Diego.While the migration is late, Biagini says the whales look much healthier than last year, when many died. "Likely these whales spent a little longer feeding this year to make up for what they didn't get last year, and with less sea ice than normal, they're able to actually go further north looking for food, which then also makes the migration longer," said Captain Dom. Biagini says the calves aren't strong enough to dive, so he's already seen close calls with private boaters speeding by. "The problem is a lot of these grays, especially the moms with babies, are intentionally trying to keep a low profile and people aren't realizing that they're there as they're flying through thee areas. So it's really crucial to be conscious of your speed and surroundings during gray whale season," said Biagini.He says while the newborns are more vulnerable, the moms do a good job keeping a low-profile.They should arrive at their destination in a week or two. 1433

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Frustrating.Difficult.How do we do this?Those sentiments were echoed by numerous San Diego parents as they reflected on distance learning at the beginning of this pandemic. Unless San Diego County is able to get off the state’s monitoring list for COVID-19, it is likely all the schools will start the year virtually.Most local districts have already announced plans for distance learning. Poway Unified School District, which originally planned to offer either on-campus learning or a virtual academy, is considering delaying the start of their school year to September 2nd to see if there was a way to still offer some in-person instruction.“You’re trapped and almost feel a sense of hopelessness,” said Patrick Batten. It is something he said did not work well when the schools were forced into distance learning in March.His son, also named Patrick, is entering the fifth grade. “It was tough,” he said, when asked about his online experience with school.The elder Batten and his wife both work full-time, mostly from home since the start of the pandemic. If there is no in-person instruction, they are considering participating in a learning pod, where eight to 10 families will hire a private teacher to help homeschool.“We’ll spend potentially ,000 a month per child to have a teacher that will, in a sense, do the homeschooling for them,” Batten said. He acknowledges that he is fortunate that his family can even entertain this option.“We’re going to see just an incredibly widening equity gap in our communities and I think that’s the more disheartening thing of all of this,” he added.Gina Chavez has three children in the Sweetwater Union High School District. “We [were] thrown into a situation with blinders on,” she said.Two of her children have special needs and have IEPs, or Individualized Education Programs. “It was even more challenging for them because that’s not the way they’re used to learning,” Chavez said.As a teacher, she understands parents’ frustration. As someone who has asthma, she also understands the health concerns for her and her family. “I want them to go back when it is safe for them to go back and I want them to go back when I know they will be protected,” Chavez said.Tancy Campbell’s young kids are in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. When the district announced it would be starting the year virtually, she was okay with the decision, but is still worried about how her 5-year-old son with autism will learn.“He has some of his needs met through online occupational therapy and speech therapy, but that social aspect is still going to be in the back of my mind,” Campbell said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — From California to Maine, breweries across the country are stepping up to help California fire victims.The effort started with the Sierra Nevada brewery. While their facility was spared by the Camp Fire, communities around it were devastated.Sierra Nevada founder Ken Grossman reached out to fellow brewers to join him in the disaster relief effort, making their ‘Resilience Butte County Proud IPA’ recipe available to those who want to help. The brewery is asking that 100 percent of profits go to fire relief efforts. So far over 1,200 breweries have pledged to make and sell the beer.“I’ve never seen anything on this scale,” said Jim Millea, brewmaster at OB Brewery. “That’s a lot of beer being made for a good cause, it’s pretty sweet!”Millea says he didn’t hesitate to join the effort.“Who wouldn’t want to be a part of a good cause?” said Millea. He’s one of many in the San Diego region who will be brewing Resilience IPA. Millea hopes to have his on tap at the OB Brewery in a few weeks. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Fire crews battled a small fire that threatened structures in Del Dios Thursday afternoon. According to Cal Fire, the blaze started in the area of Del Dios Highway and Toyon Canyon Road on the west side of Lake Hodges. The fire burned roughly three acres and threatened two structures before fire crews were able to stop the forward rate of spread. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Home sales in San Diego are starting to see a dramatic decrease, according to a new report by CoreLogic.Year-to-year, home sales fell nearly 18 percent from September of 2017 to September of 2018. From August to September of this year, home sales fell nearly 22 percent. Since 1988, the average change in sales between August and September is only 9.8 percent.“The nearly 18 percent year-over-year drop in Southern California home sales this September was the largest for any month in almost eight years,” said Andrew LePage, a CoreLogic analyst.Also in September, sales of newly-built homes in Southern California were 46.6 percent below the September average since 1988.The drop in home sales is due to higher prices and rising mortgage rates, according to CoreLogic. Those factors are pricing out some would-be buyers and prompting others to wait and see what happens with the housing market.The median home price in San Diego County in September of 2018 was 5,000, up nearly eight percent from the same time last year, however, the median price fell by 1.4 percent from August to September of 2018.“Price growth is moderating amid slower sales and more listings in many markets,” LePage said. “This is welcome news for potential homebuyers, but many still face a daunting hurdle – the monthly mortgage payment, which has been pushed up sharply by rising mortgage rates.” 1405
