The FBI is investigating a possible pawn shop theft ring involving Amazon delivery drivers and thousands of packages containing stolen merchandize sent across the country. The years-long organized theft ring generated more than million, the FBI claims in a July search warrant recently unsealed. News of the warrant was first reported by the Associated Press. Two Washington state pawn shops allegedly bought products from shoplifters who “primarily steal from brick-and-mortar retail stores,” including Home Depot, Lowes, Fred Meyer, the document says. The thieves also paid cash for stolen property from delivery drivers, who stole from Amazon.com and from drug addicts and users, FBI agent Ariana Kroshinsky alleges in the search warrant granted by a judge in the Western District of Washington. The stolen items were then believed to have been stored in Kent, Washington or in Amazon fulfillment centers elsewhere in the country. “The value of property involved in this case has reached well into the millions of dollars since this criminal activity began,” Kroshinsky said. The criminal activity started in about 2012, she said. Law enforcement watched the pawn shops over several weeks in mid-2018, using surveillance and pole cameras. No charges have been filed in this case, and because of that, Scripps is not using the names of the pawn shops or the suspects. Among the items thought to have been stolen and offered for resale are box electronics, gaming systems, computer products, tools, kitchenware, sporting goods and sewing machines, Auburn police discovered. Agents said the online accounts believe to be linked to the pawn shop has items for sale on Amazon.com in fulfillment centers in Fort Worth, Texas, Baltimore, Maryland, Robbinsville, New Jersey, San Bernardino, California and Middletown, Delaware. A library book in Maryland is getting national attention after a little girl’s love for the book turned into its own story.Anita Vassallo, the acting director of Montgomery County Public Libraries in Maryland, loves a good story.This month, she read the children’s book The Postman for the very first time, after getting a copy of it in the mail.The person who sent the book: Mora Gregg, who checked the book out from the library back in 1946, when she was just 2 years old. Mora Gregg and her family moved to Canada before she could return it. While cleaning recently, she found the book she’s had all these years.“Probably when I was dusting the books and came across it and was rummaging a bit because it had slipped behind some other books,” Gregg recalls.After finding the neglected piece of her childhood, Gregg decided to return the book to the library 73 years later.“I’m not getting any younger and I didn’t want it to get thrown away or lost or anything to happen,” Gregg says.Gregg mailed the book back to the library with a note inside, joking how she refused to let it go because she loved it so much.The story provided a surprise ending to Vassallo, who also joked about the book’s return.“We don’t charge fines on children’s books, so no matter how old a kid’s book is when it comes back to us, there’s no charge,” Vassallo says. 1356

A Denver family is trying to raise million in order to cure their son with a rare genetic disease. Doctors told Amber Freed that her 2-year-old son is one of 34 people in the world to have this rare neurological genetic disease. “The disease is so rare, it doesn’t even have a name,” Freed said. “It’s called SLC6A1, because that is the gene that it effects.” The disease causes Maxwell to have trouble moving and communicating, and soon it will only get worse. “The most debilitating part of the disease will begin between the ages of 3 and 4,” Freed said. “So, we are in a fight against time.”Maxwell has a twin sister named Riley. “I noticed early on that Maxwell wasn’t progressing as much as Riley,” Freed said. “I noticed he couldn’t use his hands. The doctors told me that every baby can use their hands. That’s when I realized there was something wrong with him.”After multiple visits to the doctor, Freed was able to find a genetic specialist to give Maxwell a diagnosis. “He looked at me and said, ‘Something is very wrong with your son. I don’t know if he’s going to live,’” Freed said. “My soul was just crushed. It was a sadness I didn’t even know existed on earth. You never think something like this could happen. I left my career, and I had no other choice but to create my own miracle and to find a treatment forward to help Maxwell and all those others like him.” Freed searched for scientists trying to create a cure, which she found at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. “We’re working with diseases where kids are born with a defective gene,” said Steven Gray, an associate professor at UTSW in pediatrics. “Our approach is to replace that gene to fix the condition at the level of their DNA. We’re taking the DNA that those patients are missing and packaging that into a virus and use that virus as a molecular delivery truck to carry those genes back in their body and fix their DNA.” “It’s a rare disease, no one has ever heard of it,” Freed said. “But one rare disease messed with the wrong mother.” Freed said she has raised million to help with research for the cure and will need an additional million, in order to let Maxwell and many others continue to enjoy life. “I want Maxwell to have every opportunity that children should have in this life,” Freed said. “When he is having a good day, I just try and soak him in as much as I can.
