There are now more than 8 million positive cases of COVID-19 in the US since the beginning of the pandemic, according to Johns Hopkins University. There are more than 218,000 deaths in the country from the coronavirus.Cases are climbing around the country, as some states report numbers of daily new positive cases as large as they saw earlier this summer. Two states on Friday, Illinois and North Carolina, reported their highest daily COVID-19 positive case count ever. Several states are reporting a low number of available hospital beds in their ICUs, including Michigan and North Dakota.Across the country, there have been more than 53,000 new daily cases each day for the last week. That represents an increase of more than 55 percent in just over a month, according to CNN.Health experts worry this surge of cases could indicate a tough winter ahead. They remind people to take precautions: wash hands, wear a mask, avoid crowds, and remain socially distant from others."They sound very simple, but people are not doing that and that's why we have an uptick in cases," Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, told CBS News this week. He also shared earlier this week that his family will not be getting together for Thanksgiving to stay safe this winter. “Don't assume that because you're in your own home with your own family that you're not going to spread infection,” he said. There are more than 39.2 million positive cases of COVID-19 recorded around the world, according to Johns Hopkins. 1555

These days, you can sit on your couch and get a pretty accurate answer to the age-old question: “What’s my trade-in worth?”As online used car retailers streamline the buying process, they’re creating more convenient ways to handle car-buying’s Achilles’ heel, the trade-in. And, with the current used car shortage caused by the pandemic, you might get a surprisingly high price selling your car to them rather than trading it in.You don’t have to sell, of course; you’re just finding out what your trade-in is worth in the most accurate way possible — the price someone will actually pay. Here’s what the process looks like, and how you can use the results.Places to get a quote onlineAlthough there may be other places in your area to trade in or sell your car, there are currently three companies dominating online used car sales: Carvana, Shift and Vroom. These companies allow you to self-appraise your car and get a quote to either sell your car or trade it in for one of theirs. The transaction and paperwork are touchless. Not all these companies are nationwide, and your vehicle will be inspected by a company representative — and the offer possibly adjusted — before you get your money.Another way to sell or trade your car is through CarMax, a used car superstore with outlets in 40 states and an in-person appraisal process that takes about 45 minutes. It may be easier to look up your car’s value on Edmunds.com, where you can get a CarMax quote without even having to go to one of its car lots.A real-world comparison testBefore starting the appraisal process, I checked pricing guide Kelley Blue Book, known as KBB, to get an idea of my cars’ trade-in values at a dealer, then collected online offers from CarMax, Carvana, Vroom and Shift. On these sites, you can fill in information manually or supply your car’s license plate number or 17-digit vehicle identification number to fetch precise year, make, model and trim. They’ll ask you about options on the car, color, if the car has been smoked in, and any warning lights or body damage. You’ll typically get an offer in minutes. Here are the results for my 2014 Volkswagen SportWagen TDI with 41,000 miles:KBB trade-in estimate: ,213.Lowest purchase offer (CarMax): ,700.Best purchase offer (Carvana): ,067.I ran the same numbers for my son’s 2016 Mazda3 Sport with 72,732 miles:KBB trade-in estimate: ,085.Lowest purchase offer (Vroom): ,750.Best purchase offer (Shift): ,100.And a friend let me run his 2019 Honda Civic Si with 4,200 miles:KBB trade-in estimate: ,225.Lowest purchase offer (CarMax): ,700.Best purchase offer (Carvana): ,077.As you can see, pricing is highly variable. The more sources you contact, the better.Do you really get that much? These companies promise a no-haggle, fair price for your trade-in. But does the price change when the company’s representative shows up and goes over your car with a fine-toothed comb?Sometimes, sellers omit important aspects of their car’s condition such as frame damage from an accident or rust, says Toby Russell, co-CEO of Shift. In these cases, after a physical inspection, the price is reduced. However, there are times when a customer gets more for a car because market conditions have changed. If a customer is transparent when describing a vehicle’s condition, “we don’t anticipate having to make adjustments to our offers,” says Carvana spokesperson Amy O’Hara. “But we are prepared should the situation arise.”Online comments on sites such as Reddit support these statements. Most consumers found the trade-in or sales process at these companies to be fast, transparent and convenient.Don’t forget the sales taxWith these figures in hand, you are in a position of strength when you visit an actual dealer. In most states, if you trade in your car, you pay sales tax only on the difference between the cost of the new car and your old one. If your new car is ,000 and you are getting ,000 for your trade-in, you pay sales tax on the difference: ,000. In a state with a 10% sales tax, you saved ,000 by trading in.That should be a consideration if a dealer’s offer doesn’t quite measure up to the offers you get online or through CarMax.Let the dealer make you its best offer. Tell the used car manager, the internet sales office or the salesperson that you’ve already appraised your car on pricing guides and gotten quotes from online retailers. You don’t need to share the offers you have — just ask for their best price.Factor in the sales tax before you reject anything, but with backup offers it’s easy to walk away, sell the car independently and return with cash to strike a better deal.More From NerdWalletWill You Get a Refund If COVID-19 Closes Your Campus?College Going Online? There are about 6,000 restaurants in Queens County, according to the Queens Chamber of Commerce — and if indoor dining doesn’t resume, up to 3,000 may never open again.“For the last six months, it’s been very hard for everyone in the diner business, in the restaurant business. Especially for us,” said John Thanosopolous, who owns the Atlantic Diner in Richmond Hill. There are now multiple lawsuits against the city and New York state over not permitting indoor dining at city restaurants, despite every municipality around them being permitted to do so.“This is the knockout punch for us. This is the lawsuit. We didn’t want to do this. This is not us. We are workers,” said Rob De Luca, who owns De Luca Restaurant in Staten Island.Mayor Bill de Blasio did not address the status of indoor dining whatsoever during his Tuesday press briefing, though days ago, hinted an announcement could be coming soon.Governor Andrew Cuomo said other cities and towns were allowed to have diners indoors because their compliance was better than New York City’s.Without explicitly naming the mayor, the governor said local enforcement failed when bars were first permitted to re-open months ago. Ultimately that led state government to create a statewide task force of inspectors to take up the issue. But Cuomo said that task force is spread thin.“If you go to indoor dining, you are roughly doubling the number of places that you're going to have to monitor,” said Cuomo. The governor said the city should be pulling resources and inspectors from the NYPD, or from any and all regulatory agencies it has, and until it does, New York City restaurants cannot welcome its customers back inside. That is not what thousands of restaurant owners across the city want to hear.As for De Luca, he believes this disproportionately impacts the most vulnerable in the industry.Mitch Schwartz, the Mayor’s Director of Rapid Response and Deputy Press Secretary, issued this statement Tuesday evening:“Careful public health guidance. Nimble and rigorous inspections. Fair and honest dealing with businesses. That’s how we’ve reopened our economy while keeping COVID-19 rates extremely low, and that’s how we’ll reopen indoor dining if and when it’s safe to do so. Now, we’re continuing to work with the State on a responsible timeline and clear protocols for re-opening. That process is underway – and when it’s over, New Yorkers will know we’ve put their health and safety first.”This article was written by Narmeen Choudhury for WPIX. 2519

Three explosions that occurred when people picked up packages outside their residences appear to be connected, Austin, Texas, city Police Chief Brian Manley said Monday at a news conference.A Monday morning explosion killed a 17-year-old African-American boy and also injured a woman at the house. A second Monday explosion left a 75-year-old woman in critical condition, the chief said. A March 2 blast killed a 39-year-old African-American man.All the explosions occurred when people who lived at the residences went outside and picked up packages, Manley said. The packages were not delivered by the postal service or delivery services like UPS or FedEx, he said."The evidence makes us believe these incidents are related," he said, saying investigators have not come up with a motive or whether anybody has claimed responsibility. It's not known if the victims knew each other or if they were targeted, he said.Police also have not decided if these are hate crimes, but said that's a real possibility of the victims' races."We're not ruling anything out at this point," he said. "We're willing to investigate any avenue."Authorities have only identified one victim. Anthony Stephan House, 39, died from injuries in the March 2 explosion, police said. The elderly woman injured today sustained life-threatening injuries, the chief said.In describing the Monday morning blast that killed the teenager, the chief said: "What we understand at this point is that early this morning is that one of the residents went out front and there was a package on the front doorstep. They brought that package inside the residence and as they opened that package, both victims were in the kitchen, and the package exploded, causing the injuries that resulted in the young man's death and the injuries to the adult female."The female's injuries were not life-threatening, he said.Manley strongly urged residents to be on the lookout for suspicious packages and to alert authorities immediately."If you've received a package that has been left on your doorstep or left in your yard or left on your driveway that you were not expecting or that was not from someone you know, then give us a call," Manley said.Likewise, he urged the thousands of visitors in town -- many at the South by Southwest Interactive Festival -- to be cautious. "Enjoy yourself, have a good time," he said. "But be aware, be suspicious."The festival began Friday in downtown Austin and ends Tuesday. The explosions are not in the immediate vicinity of the festival.Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton urged all Texans to be cautious. "With three reported explosions in the Austin area, I want to urge all Texans to report any suspicious or unexpected packages arriving by mail to local law enforcement authorities. Call 911 immediately if you receive something suspicious," he said on Twitter.Local police, as well as agencies including the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, are working on the case. The ATF is processing evidence from the first device at its lab and evidence from the second device will also be sent to an ATF lab for consistency.Governor Greg Abbott announced a ,000 reward was being offered for information leading to the identification and arrest of the person or persons involved in the deadly package blasts. 3330
