SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When a baby is born premature, a family’s world can be turned upside down. November is Prematurity Awareness Month. So, in recognition of that, the March of Dimes donated 50 care packages filled with everything from fuzzy socks to crossword puzzles, and tissues to parents who spend countless hours with their babies in the NICU. "Oh, is that funny?" says mom Vanessa holding her newborn. For a mother, anything her newborn does is a little miracle. "So this is our boy Ezekial,” says Vanessa showing off her little miracle. “He was 3 pounds, 10 ounces." But Ezekial is only one of three miracles. There's also sister Eleana, and little Evelyn. Triplets, three little miracles, born nine weeks premature at Sharp Mary Birch. "I spent three and a half weeks upstairs on the fourth floor, admitted. Um, it was hard,” adds Vanessa holding back tears. “I carried the triplets until 31 weeks and three days, and we've been here ever since, I'm going on about 40 days." Forty days and counting in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital. And Vanessa, with a two year old at home already, is here six to nine hours a day. "I come between 10 and 11, and I'll leave about 5 or 6. It just depends. Sometimes it's just hard to leave," says Vanessa. On this day, the March of Dimes is here delivering care packages. A little comfort for parents trying to navigate the emotional roller coaster of life in the NICU. "It's great, the nurses love our babies, and the doctors are amazing,” says Vanessa. “It's just some days are hard because this is what you come to every day. And every day I just want to hear, 'Your babies are ready to go home.'" That day will come, just like it did for Kristina and Mia. "She was born on July 31st, and she was supposed to be born on November 3rd. She was born 1 pound and 9 ounces," says mother Kristina holding her little Mia tight. Mia was 14 weeks premature. "This kind of puts it into perspective of how small she was,” says Kristina showing a picture on her phone. “That's my husband’s finger, and that's her little hand. Her fingers don't even wrap around the tip of his finger." The difficulty of having to leave your baby in the hospital, and the trust that a parent has to have in the nurses who care for them is overwhelming and at the same time, very comforting. “Yes, it is extremely overwhelming, depressing,” says Kristina. “But you bond with these people here and they become family, they really do. That's why I’m back here today to visit my primary nurse. We will always be grateful for everything they did for us here." Mia was part of a March of Dimes study when she was in the NICU at Sharp Mary Birch. Each year more than 22 thousand babies never make it out of the NICU because of complications with premature birth. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A San Diego-based genetics company received the FDA's Emergency Use Authorization for its revolutionary type of COVID-19 testing. The new test not only provides a positive or negative reading, but it also provides vital genetic information that can help create a vaccine.From concept to the FDA's emergency use authorization, the San Diego-based team at Illumina worked at warp speed."The idea came 58 days ago," Susan Tousi, Sr. VP. of Production and Development at Illumina said. "It took a village of all of us in San Diego to make that happen."There are already many different types of COVID-19 tests on the market.But the scientists and engineers at Illumina came up with a test that reveals a lot more."Our test not only gives you a yes or no answer for the presence of the virus, but it also gives you the genetic sequence of the virus," Tousi said.On Tuesday, the FDA approved the Emergency use of the world's first COVID-19 test that also shows the biological makeup of the virus.The results can help researchers track and trace the virus and study different mutations over time and in different regions."Knowing this is really critical, not only to the development of effective vaccines but also for us to detect its presence, recurrence, and whether there is a mutated form that we need to be prepared for," Tousi said.The sample is collected via nose or throat swab and sent to the lab.A sequencing machine can run up 43,000 samples a week. From swab to results, it takes only 24 hours."This was the culmination of an incredible amount of work. And I'm confident we're going to make a big difference in the fight against COVID," Tousi said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two San Diego brothers are renewing their push for a Holocaust memorial along the Embarcadero, but the Port of San Diego does not appear to be on board.Mark and Frank Powell, who are Jewish, want to install the memorial at Tuna Harbor, just steps from the U.S.S. Midway Museum and the popular Unconditional Surrender kissing statue. The monument depicts U.S. Soldiers liberating Nazi concentration camps at the end of World War II, with general Dwight D. Eisenhower looking on. The Powells are bringing the idea back to the Port in light of the recent Poway Chabad shooting and overall increase in anti-Semitic incidents. In 2017, the Powells had the finances lined up, and support from more than a dozen politicians. They had letters from Democratic Congressman Scott Peters, Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. But the Port's Public Art committee rejected the proposal in an 8-0 vote. In a statement Friday, Port Chairman Gary Bonelli said there were a number of issues with the proposal."No one on the Committee questioned the importance of the proposed WWII Military Liberation Monument, but Committee members felt that this particular proposal neither inspired nor caused one to contemplate the subject matter," Bonelli said. "We have to teach our kids that life is hard and life is a struggle."The port added that it's not currently accepting new art proposals for the Embarcadero because of redevelopment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With COVID-19 cases spiking in parts of the country, some of the largest testing providers are struggling to keep up with the demand, complicating efforts to isolate infected individuals and trace their contacts.Quest Diagnostics announced Monday its turnaround time for most test results had expanded to four to six days, back to where it was in the beginning of April. Quest said its turnaround time for priority tests -- those for hospitalized patients and symptomatic healthcare workers -- remained at one day.San Diego County operates 33 free testing sites for COVID-19, but ABC 10News found turnaround times can vary.Have you waited more than 7 days for COVID-19 test results? Email our reporter.Team10’s Adam Racusin got his negative test results from the site in Lakeside back in three days.The county’s goal is to report all test results within three days, although the current average is between three and five days for non-priority tests, according to County Health and Human Services Agency Director Nick Macchione.The county typically reports priority tests within 24 to 48 hours for vulnerable populations like individuals at skilled nursing facilities and first responders, he said.I visited the testing site in the SDCCU Stadium parking lot and got my negative test results back in seven days, after I placed a call to the County Nurse Line inquiring about them.“It’s about resources,” said County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten.Wooten suggested that the recent spike in demand could be playing a role in increased wait times for results.The county uses its own lab to test samples, but when the lab gets backed up it sends samples to private labs that have been inundated with demand.In addition to Quest, Lab Corp and CVS Minute Clinic have reported long waits linked to high demand in recent days.In hard-hit Arizona, ABC News reported that some people are waiting up to 10 days for results."When we tell them, go home, self-isolate, quarantine yourself until we get back to you and that period of time is a week to 10 days, people start to kind of diverge from those suggestions within a few days,” said Dr. Tyler Smith, a professor and epidemiologist at National University.He said not only can testing delays lead to more infections if people waiting for results venture out in public, the added time makes contact tracing more difficult.There are already signs of strain on the county’s ability to do contact tracing: as of Monday, the county was able to launch just 57 percent of its case investigations within 24 hours, setting off one of its warning triggers.The county says it is taking steps to speed up testing in its lab, including adding staff and securing new testing equipment that has yet to arrive. The county has also added shifts at the lab, going with up to three shifts a day to process specimens.As the number of cases grows in San Diego County, there could be future delays in turnaround time at the county lab, “but likely not beyond where it is today,” said spokesman Tim McClain.“Everyone should be practicing social distancing, good handwashing and wearing of a face covering,” he said via email. “Individuals who felt symptomatic or otherwise had a strong belief they had the virus should isolate themselves and follow other public health precautions until the results come back.” 3362
