(KGTV) - Income taxes on military pension is pushing a lot of people out of California. A new study proves that taking those taxes away would actually help both veterans and the state. For the people who served their country, it's tough to make it in California. "My wife just retired," said Matthew Schillingburg. "I just retired and so we're all on disposable income right now."He served in the army for more than 20 years. When his income is taxed by the state it can be hard to get by. "The thing that’s really holding us here, this community right here in San Diego that we grew up and love so much, our kids and our grandkids here," Schillingburg added.He joins 1.8 million military veterans who live in California. Many of them are looking to leave the state for more affordable areas where their pension won't take a hit. Assembly Bill 2394 is trying to change that. "If we can eliminate that, that helps us have more disposable income and we can consume more in the community that we love so much," said Schillingburg.According to a new study, if veterans were exempt from state taxes there would be big changes by the year 2025. More than 12,000 jobs would be added to the economy, along with 0 million in total personal income, million in state and local taxes and billion in total business sales. The bill is currently in committee. (KGTV) - A group of Massachusetts police officers and firefighters are being hailed as heroes after coming to the aid of a choking puppy this week.North Reading resident Megan Vitale stormed into a police station Sunday telling officers her 9-week-old Saint Bernard puppy, Bodhi, was choking on food. An acquaintance came running in with Bodhi shortly after, the puppy limp and unresponsive in his arms, surveillance footage from the station showed.A group of officers came running out to begin administering first aid to the puppy. A group of North Reading firefighters also arrived at the station to help with back blows and chest compressions. RELATED: Beloved lizard missing from Spring Valley pet storeAfter 10 minutes, the food blockage was finally dislodged and Bodhi was revived."Ultimately, a life was saved thanks to rescuers falling back on their training and remaining calm. Even though we are not faced with this kind of incident every day, the officers reacted just as they would in any emergency situation," North Reading Police Chief Murphy said. “We are hopeful that the puppy will make a full recovery."Firefighters used a special oxygen tank designed for pets to help Bodhi get breathing again."Many of our firefighters have pets at home in their own families. We do not get to choose the emergency situation that comes our way, so it is important that first responders be prepared for anything," Fire Chief Stats said.Bodhi was able to leave with Vitale to receive follow-up care from a veterinarian, according to the police department. 1599

(KGTV) - In her new book, Elizabeth Smart says the man who kidnapped her also tried to kidnap a girl in El Cajon by posing as Mormon and befriending the girl’s family, according to People Magazine.Smart detailed Brian David Mitchell’s alleged plan in When There’s Hope: Healing, Moving Forward, and Never Giving Up. The book includes information about Smart’s abduction in 2002, when she was 14 years old. Smart was held captive by Mitchell and Wanda Barzee for nine months.Before Smart’s kidnapping, Mitchell deliberately went to a Mormon church in East County to find a girl to victimize, Smart wrote. Gavin Newsom and his family are in quarantine, after they learned that three of their children was recently exposed to a California Highway Patrol officer who had tested positive for COVID-19.Newsom said late Sunday that he and his family were isolating for 14 days following the exposure. Newsom said he and his wife, Jennifer, had no direct interaction with the officer.He added that on Sunday, his family had all tested negative."Late Friday evening, [Jennifer] and I learned that 3 of our children had been exposed to an officer from the California Highway Patrol who had tested positive for COVID-19. Jen and I had no direct interaction with the officer and wish them a speedy recovery," Newsom said in a statement on social media. "Thankfully, the entire family tested negative today. However, consistent with local guidance, we will be quarantining for 14 days. We are grateful for all the officers that keep our family safe and for every frontline worker who continues to go to work during this pandemic."Newsom's spokesperson, Nathan Click, had said on Friday that one of the Newsom's children may have been exposed to the virus while at school, though at that time, Click said it was a classmate that had tested positive.
