BAKERSFIELD, Cali. — A California native is learning that her family tree is a lot larger than she had ever thought after growing up as an only child. Forty-one years late, she found that she has 22 half brothers and sisters that she never knew about.Jennifer Slayton said that she took a 23andme DNA test four months ago and was contacted by one of her half brothers in January. She was then introduced to her 21 other half-siblings shortly after.Slayton said there could be more siblings out there, but she's grateful to have the ones she has.She said that she first learned she was donor conceived at the age of 17. Slayton said that her father was diagnosed with a very serious form of dementia that was hereditary and this caused her to be worried that she would inherit it. That's when her mother informed her that he was not biologically her father. She said that technology limitations at the time kept her from finding her father, but in 2018 her husband wanted to try out the DNA kit for fun. After the results came back, one of her half brothers, Evan, contacted her. She asked how many of them there were and he told Slayton that she was number 21. "They're amazing, like I went and met them for the first time and I was really nervous and I walked in and it was like meeting versions of myself," Slayton said. "Like all of these people have so much in common with me and they are nice, obviously, and they are friendly and we have a lot of the same interests and the same mannerisms, we all talk with our hands a lot."Slayton has since started making new memories with her half siblings and has met her donor. She said that she has several family get-togethers planned and they are all waiting to see if more matches pop up. 1748

As more and more people leave California, a local suburb in Nevada is flourishing. From 2013 to 2017, the Wall Street Journal reports that 56 percent of people who moved to Henderson came from neighboring California."They're getting houses that they could never afford in California," said Zar Zanganeh, "houses that are on golf courses."Zanganeh is the owner and broker of LUXE Estates & Lifestyles. He's personally witnessed the California migration. A decade ago, roughly a third of his clients were from California. Today, that number is closer to 70 percent.Zanganeh says Californians are cashing out the equity from their homes and buying a home in Nevada in cash.Outside of the Henderson DMV on Wednesday, 13 Action News spoke with several California transplants. The Robinson family has 13 children. They moved to the state because of the lower cost of living and employment opportunities. "It's (California) too expensive, and the crime rate is a little crazy," said Frances Robinson.Zanganeh says that every time a home sells in your community, the value of your home goes up. 1107

As the census is about to get underway nationwide, the AARP is warning that scammers could use the census as a prime opportunity to conduct impostor scams intended to steal your personal information. According to AARP data, nearly half of Americans have been targeted by impostor scams in the past, while a majority may be susceptible to phony Census correspondence or telephone calls in the coming months. Data would suggest that people are more susceptible to impostor scams. The US Federal Trade Commission reported a 50% increase in impostor scams in 2019 compared to 2018. "We've learned that scammers are very shrewd and adept at capitalizing on current events," said Kathy Stokes, director, fraud prevention programs, AARP. "The census has been in the news, so most people are expecting to hear soon from the Census Bureau. Scammers will use that to their advantage as they aim to deceive people into sharing sensitive information or handing over money."Of concern is that 70% of Americans surveyed by AARP were incorrect or unsure on whether the US Census would email the public. The first contact from the US Census people will receive is in March via US Mail, with an in-person visit coming in May for those who do not return their census form. Also, 35% were incorrect or unsure on whether the US Census would ask for social security numbers. The US Census will not request personal information such as social security numbers.
