XINING, April 25 (Xinhua) -- China's health authorities have stepped up measures in preventing epidemics in northwest China's Qinghai Province where at least 2,192 people died since the April 14 quake, the provincial government said Sunday.More than 400 people are working to prevent epidemics. They are monitoring infectious diseases, water quality and food safety. No epidemic outbreak has been reported so far, said a spokesman with Qinghai's public health department.The epidemic prevention workers have so far disinfected 1,597,000 square meters of area and 6,600 tents, he said. PRETORIA, April 1 (Xinhua) -- China has pledged to import more value-added products from South Africa to optimize bilateral trade.Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin made this pledge on Wednesday when he delivered a key-note speech at the China-South Africa Economic and Trade Forum in Pretoria.South Africa was the last leg of Jia's 10-day African tour which has already taken him to Cameroon and Namibia. BEIJING, March 27 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR) said Saturday it would assemble more than 1,100 engineers and workers from across the country to dig over 1,600 wells in the country's southwest, where a severe drought is likely to continue.All of those professionals would be arriving at the droughty areas by April 1 and the first batch set off on Saturday, said the MLR in a statement on its website.More than 1,600 wells would be drilled, providing 200,000 cubic meters of drinking water per day for 2 million people and 1 million head of livestock, said the ministry, hoping to finish digging 1,400 of the wells by May 10.So far, the MLR has already dug over 100 wells, which can produce drinking water for more than 100,000 people.The drought, which has left southwest China suffering since last Autumn, would likely continue till May as no substantial rainfall was expected ahead of the rainy season, according to meteorological agencies.It has left 18 million residents and 11.7 million heads of livestock in the region with drinking water shortages and caused direct economic losses of 23.7 billion yuan (3.5 billion U.S. dollars), data from the Ministry of Civil Affairs showed.

BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- In light of the recent school attacks, China has tightened security for the college entrance examination which begins on Monday."All the relevant departments and local governments are fully prepared to respond to emergencies during the exam," said Liu Junyi, vice-director of the exam center under the Ministry of Education, on Sunday.In Beijing, police, security guards and volunteers will work together to guard the exam venues.In Henan and Anhui provinces, emergency-responses have been prepared in case of disorder due to bad weather, serious cheating behavior, food poisoning, or traffic accidents.China's national college entrance examination will be held on Monday, with more than 9.57 million examinees competing for 6.57 million places at nationwide universities and colleges.Because of the recent slew of attacks against students, boarding school teachers in south China' s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region are required to walk students from their schools to the exam venues."The college entrance exam is a matter of great importance that demands joint efforts of relevant departments," Liu said.In Chongqing municipality, public security departments have inspected students' living areas around exam venues to ensure their safety.In Hubei province, relevant departments have completed a rehearsal using exam paper B in case that students are found cheating using exam paper A.In Jilin, an anti-cheating campaign has seized over 4,000 cheating device sets."We have organized a dozen expert teams, who are ready to handle nationwide emergencies and incidents," Liu said.In quake-hit Yushu of Qinghai Province, experts from the Ministry of Education have arrived to help hold the exam.A total of 9.57 million people have registered to sit for the exam this year.
