It was time to leave Brooklyn.“It’s a wonderful place, that said it’s an urban metropolis and we are people who love to be outside and Idaho is a different type of location that offers various outdoor activities that are important to us,” Wells said.So, they left. After all, all they really need is an internet connection.“The traditional work day has totally changed with our present situation and it’s taken some time to get used to it,” Wells said. “The ability to work remote and see new parts of the country and it makes you happier and ultimately a more productive employee.”Now, they fish, horseback ride, explore and hike. They've even taken up archery.“We’ve hiked in the Tetons, we’ve horseback with a number of outfitters, we’ve taken day trips to other cities like Ashton in St. Anthony. We saw the dunes in St. Anthony,” Wells said.All while keeping their day jobs.“They understand as long as you’re present and you have internet access that you’re able to do whatever it is you need to do, whether you’re in an office or remote,” Wells said.Property managers say it's a trend they're seeing a lot of.“The 30-day rental used to be more of a unicorn than it is now,” Danessa Itaya, president of Property Management Inc., said.PMI has 260 franchises across the United States.“We hear from our franchisees that they’re getting these 2-3 month rentals, but they’re asking for upgrading internet so I can work remotely (and) how easy can I access the grocery store and the beach,” Itaya said.San Antonio, Texas, Austin, Texas, Naples, Florida, and Idaho are destination hot spots.“Driggs, Idaho, is a feeder into Yellowstone, into Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and they’re regularly looking at 1-3 month rentals. You don’t usually get that, especially in Driggs, Idaho,” Itaya said.Now, as fall approaches, the other inquiry is about school, and internet bandwidth to support both distance learning and remote employees.“They need high-speed internet which is not common,” Itaya said. “You don’t normally get that request from a vacation rental. A hardship that some are finding difficult to overcome."Economically, it's been devastating to us. We opened up our gym three years ago and sort of like a little miracle. We took over an existing gym that was probably not fitting the community. We came in there with our life savings, we opened up this beautiful gym and we were becoming very successful," said John Pena, the owner of GYM NYC in New York City.Pena says their business was shut down for nearly six months. Now, he's finally excited to reopen. Pena applied for and received money from the Paycheck Protection Program but it only did so much. "There is no income coming in from the business, obviously. The extra 0 on the unemployment has really been a big help but that’s going away. I’ve been able to pay my bills and that's it," said Pena. Pena and other gym owners in New York are hoping for more government help for small businesses to help them get back on their feet."In general, I think there is a set of overhead expenses that I’m sure owners in any industry would tell you play a huge factor. Commissioner Lowery hopes other local governments across the country are also able to give something back to small businesses."If you're going to tell businesses to shut down, you have to give me something back so I don't starve," says Pena. For Pena, he's concerned that not helping businesses reopen could have a devastating economic impact. "The quicker we can get back on our feet, the quicker we can get back and people can start walking around and feeling confident, because not making any money, not being able to feed your family is far worse than this coronavirus," said Pena. 2929

While balancing parenthood alone during a pandemic can challenging, adding eviction to the equation can be heartbreaking.“My heart dropped for the simple fact that I was homeless before with my four kids,” Mary Ratchford-Bass said after losing her job as an office cleaner.“Once the pandemic hit, they went to working from home and that left us with little to no work to do,” she said.Just a few days before being forced out of her apartment, Ratchford-Bass, who was born into a Baptist family, was saved by someone she never met, calling it almost a “religious experience.”“It really was,” she said. “Because when I got the eviction notice, all I could do was pray.”Helping answer those prayers and pay the rent was 13-year-old Jewish girl Rena Brittan, who became inspired to help others while studying child labor laws during a service project for her bat mitzvah.“She wanted to help people pay their rent in part because she wanted families and children to be safe,” said Rena’s mother, Dana Brittan.Dana says while her daughter is staying away from the spotlight and is no longer doing interviews, she still is helping others pay their bills.“Part of why that’s so important is because once a person is evicted from their home, it’s like having a criminal record,” she said.Rena started a GoFundMe page with the money going to the Resident Relief Foundation, a nonprofit that help people pay their rent.With a recent report by the American Apartment Owners Association showing 60% of landlords saying their tenants are unable to pay rent because of the coronavirus, Ratchford-Bass is thankful for Rena helping cover her housing cost during this crisis.“If I could give her a big hug, I would,” Ratchford-Bass said. “She just doesn’t know how much she’s helped my family and I’m sure other families, too.”So far, Rena’s GoFundMe page has raised more than ,000, an amount she hopes to increase as millions of Americans still face evictions during this pandemic. 1975
