Talking with teens about drugs and alcohol may not be the easiest thing. But research shows kids whose parents do, are 50 percent less likely to abuse those substances. And while these topics may be light ones, conversations on heavier topics don't look much different.  Wardell says she started talking with her teenage children, Brandon and Elissa, about drugs and alcohol when they were young. She says she's honest with them about the reality of drugs and alcohol, and pushes them to think about how they might react if around them. And if there's a situation her kids can't get themselves out of, the Wardell's have developed a plan for that.  "We have a little code word they can text or a call," Karla Wardell says. "And if they text and they write something like what time do you want me home but if home is all capitalized that is their SOS to me like I want to come home."  Elissa Wardell has had to send her mom a text like that, and even uses a way to delete it to be even more discreet.  "Your friends won't be able to see that you have said I want to go home," Elissa Wardell says. "They will just think that your parents are being mean and you can go home."  Steve Martinez works with Speak Now, a campaign that encourages parents to have conversations with young ones about the dangers of substance use.  "If a parent feels that it is wrong for example to binge drink or use substances, that teens are three times less likely to use," Martinez says.  Martinez says conversations can happen anywhere, and can start when a child is as young as nine. He says approach matters, and scare tactics don't work.  What does work? Building trust. She wired 0 via Western Union to a website -- now gone -- called Best Mini Shnauzers.com.That was the end of the seller, and of her puppy dreams."I tried to text him numerous times after that," she said. "Called him, couldn't get through. That was the end of the communications. Nothing."Puppy scam worsens during pandemicThe puppy scam has been around for more than five years, but the BBB says this year it's getting worse because so many people want either a "pandemic puppy" or a holiday puppy.Sara Kemerer of the Better Business Bureau said real puppy photos get reposted at counterfeit websites."It's very easy for scammers to steal a video or picture of a pet from the internet to make the pet seem real," she said.But the pups are always out of town, and the seller will ask hundreds of dollars for shipping and insurance.Once you wire them the money, they and their ad disappear.How to protect yourselfSo what can you do? Kemerer says ask for video of the seller with the pup. The annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August was widely panned by public health experts for gathering tens of thousands of people amid a pandemic.In the months since, the impact of the rally is still being studied.According to CDC data released in recent days, 51 attendees of the rally who resided in Minnesota were infected with the coronavirus in the days following the event. Of them, three were hospitalized and one person died.There were also 35 coronavirus cases tied to direct contacts of those who were infected after attending the rally. Of them, one person was hospitalized.“The findings suggest that this rally not only had a direct impact on the health of attendees, but also led to subsequent SARS-CoV-2 transmission among household, social, and workplace contacts of rally attendees upon their return to Minnesota,” the CDC said in its findings. “Whole genome sequencing results supported the finding of secondary and tertiary transmission associated with this rally.”Amid the rally, Minnesota’s Department of Health recommended that motorcycle rally attendees quarantine for 14 days upon return and be tested 5–7 days later even if they were asymptomatic, according to the CDC.Following the rally, the City of Sturgis required government workers to be tested for COVID-19.
