SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Homeless hospital patients in San Diego are sometimes dumped back on the streets after receiving treatment. Some of them - then turned away from shelters who don't have enough room. California lawmakers are trying to change that.It breaks Kim Peterson's heart to see her friend, Heather, living on this Chula Vista sidewalk."This is a picture of us together," said Peterson. "We've become more like sisters."Heather is constantly in and out of hospitals."She's had multiple strokes," Peterson said. "She needs to use a wheelchair to get around."But, the care stops once the hospitals let her go."She was released back to the street with a bus pass," Peterson told 10News. "It was raining, with no place to go, just a blanket."Another time, Heather was taken to a shelter - but turned away.  "They dropped her off far from where she felt safe," Peterson said. "They took her downtown where there wasn't a bed for her."One hospital told 10News they give patients a list of resources, but the patient has to coordinate them on their own.  Senate Bill 1152 would require hospitals to confirm the shelters have room before they're discharged."What does she need to do?" said Peterson. "I will help her do whatever she needs to do to get housed, to be safe, instead, she's laying on the sidewalk."The current problem leaves the homeless in their most vulnerable state and back on the streets. "It's very discouraging to think that we can't do better than that," Peterson said. Today, Heather got news that a nursing facility has extra room. "She will never get better," Peterson said. "She's gonna be in this permanent state of disability."Heather will be celebrating her 60th birthday next month, with a roof over her head. Many others won't be as lucky. "We can find a solution," said Peterson. "I know we can."   1957

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two years after Lime scooters hit the pavement, the company has reached a milestone - surpassing 100 million rides globally. The company is thanking its riders who span across more than 120 cities, 30 countries, and five continents.A San Diego chef is one of those riders; in fact, he too reached a personal milestone. "My name is Justin Vaiciunas, and I am San Diego's #1 Lime rider!"A Lime representative called Vaiciunas last week to tell him about the accomplishment; Vaiciunas clocked in nearly 600 rides this year."I live right over off of Pacific Highway, and I scooter from there to work every day and back, and then also all around; even to Balboa Park, North Park, everywhere I can," said Vaiciunas. Vaiciunas likes how accessible and easy the scooters make it getting around downtown. He now uses them for 80 percent of his commutes. "I used to spend about in gas a week; now I maybe spend that a month."The company says with the growth they've increased education outreach as well as efforts to be good stewards in the cities they serve. As for Vaiciunes, his next goal is being the country's #1 Lime rider.Last month Lime's future in San Diego was called into question when the City claimed the company violated geo-fencing rules. The city then began the process to revoke Lime's permit.But a Lime spokesperson says the company looks forward to an upcoming hearing to make its case. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Westview High School officials Wednesday scrambled to cover up offensive graffiti painted prominently on campus overnight.A custodian discovered the graffiti over a "W" in the center of campus "defaced with graffiti containing offensive symbols and language," according to Westview Principal Tina Ziegler.The graffiti was described to 10News reporter Steve Fiorina as depicting several swastikas, sexual and crude language, profanities, and obscene drawings.In a letter to parents, Ziegler said campus security and custodians worked quickly to prevent students' exposure to the graffiti: 639

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across the country, there have been reports of racial discrimination against the Asian Pacific Islander community (API), including here in San Diego County.Erin Chew said she was wrapping up her grocery shopping trip in San Marcos when a man made eye contact with her and began speaking loudly about Asians."He just looked at me and started talking extremely loud to his partner or wife Looking at me saying Chinese people eat all this dirty stuff, eating bats and everything," Chew explained. She said the man also said, "I blame all the Chinese people for bringing this virus into this country."The incidents are not just happening out in public."My organization, SDS U'S Filipinx and Filipinx-American organization Andres Bonifacio Samahan was recently Zoombombed by a group of unknown individuals slandering us," said SDSU student Cristal Ami.Video from the Zoom meeting shows a group of unknown people yelling things like, "All you Asians have coronavirus!"In San Leandro, hate-filled notes were left on several homes, one read, "You have until May 23, Saturday at 10:30 AM to leave this country. No Asians allowed."An online reporting center called Stop AAPI Hate has been documenting the number of reported incidents against Asian Pacific Islanders across the country.As of April 29, it has received 1,711 reports, including 28 across San Diego County.The incidents range from verbal harassment and shunning, to physical assault.The San Diego Asian Pacific Islander (SD API) Coalition is working with San Diego Council President Georgette Gomez and Councilmember Monica Montgomery to put a resolution in front of the entire city council that will address the racial discrimination locally.The resolution proposes that the city should document and report hate crimes through Stop AAPI Hate and work with SD API to use the reported information to create targeted education and provide resources to those affected personally.SD API also said the city council would encourage the city's Human Relations Commission to address and investigate reported incidents.The city council will vote to adopt the resolution on June 2. 2150

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With schools temporarily closed because of the coronavirus, a Carlsbad librarian is providing the comfort of a library to students one driveway at a time.Calavera Hills Elementary librarian Lindsay Rudy started drive-by storytimes Wednesday, but has already found her schedule filing up with requests."I'm definitely surprised," Rudy said. "It makes my heart so happy."RELATED: San Diego County libraries go digital to fight spread of coronavirusRudy said the service started after she contacted a family and asked if they would be interested in storytime. Soon, others also signaled their interest."It brought me back to feeling like I was right there with them at the school," Rudy said.
