BEIJING, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- China's Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi clarified China's stance on Internet management and emphasized Internet is open and active in China when meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, a spokesman of China's Foreign Ministry said Friday.Spokesman Ma Zhaoxu made the remarks in response to a question on whether Yang and Clinton discussed the Google case during their meeting on the sidelines of an international conference on Afghanistan in London."Yang stressed that Internet in China is open and active," said Ma.Chinese people enjoyed adequate freedom of speech in line with the law and have access to various kinds of information, which is an important reason why Chinese people unswervingly follow the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, Ma said."Yang said promoting the development of the Internet is our consistent policy," said Ma.Ma added that China has its own domestic situation and cultural tradition, and it accords with the world's common practice that China regulates the Internet according to its laws and policies."China advocates severely fighting against hacking through beefing up international cooperation, so as to protect Internet safety and citizens' privacy in accordance with the law," Ma said.According to the Internet Society of China, the number of cyber attacks from abroad saw a year-on-year increase of 148 percent in 2008.

BEIJING, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Foreign-funded enterprises in China exported 494.4 billion U.S. dollars worth of machinery, electrical and electronic products in 2009.A document posted on the website of the General Administration of Customs (GAC) said the figure made up 69.3 percent of the country's total exports of such products in the past year.Exports of machinery, electrical and electronic products by privately-owned enterprises totalled 106.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2009, down 8.7 percent from a year earlier, according to the document.State-owned enterprises only exported 92.1 billion U.S. dollars worth of machinery, electrical and electronic products, accounting for 12.9 percent of the country's total machinery, electrical and electronic products last year.The GAC document also said the majority of the country's exports of machinery, electrical and electronic products fell into the category of processing and assembling trade.China's exports of machinery, electrical and electronic products in the category of processing and assembling trade totalled 466.4 billion U.S. dollars last year, making up 65.4 percent of the country's total exports of such products.The country exported 713.1 billion U.S. dollars worth of machinery, electrical and electronic products last year, down 13.4 percent year-on-year. The exports contributed 59.3 percent to China's total exports in 2009.The European Union (EU), the United States of America and Hong Kong were the three major destinations for the China mainland's exports of machinery, electrical and electronic products last year.China exported 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars worth of products last year, down 16 percent from 2008, replacing Germany as the world's largest exporter.

BEIJING, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government pledges to improve the quality of education and enable people to enjoy fairer education through more investment and reforms in the coming decade.The draft of the National Outline for Medium and Long-term Education Reform and Development (2010-2020) was published Sunday for public opinions.The amount of government investment on education annually will increase to 4 percent of the country's total GDP by 2012, according to the outline. The proportion was 3.48 percent of its GDP in 2008.Ding Xuedong, vice minister of finance, indicated on Sunday that the four-percent target was ambitious but also challenging because other sectors such as agriculture, science and technology, health care and social security need investment, too.

  

BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has pledged fresh measures to fight offensive content transmitted by mobile phones and websites.China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom, the country's three mobile carriers, have been required to examine the quality of their business partners, Thursday's China Daily reported Thursday.The MIIT also asked the Internet service providers to supervise the content of websites and close irregular websites.Operators of pornographic websites had been evading supervision from authorities through technical tactics including frequently switching domain names and IP addresses, the paper quoted a report on PC World's online edition as saying.The authorities will introduce a blacklist and the design of content-filtering technology to help network operators stem obscene content from reappearing.The measures aimed to protect the healthy growth of the next generation and clean the social environment, the MIIT said in statement.
