BEIJING -- China and Japan on Thursday expressed the hope that bilateral ties should move headway as they staged grand activities marking the 35th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties."Chinese and Japanese politicians made strategic decision to normalize diplomatic relations 35 years ago, turning a new chapter of the Sino-Japanese ties," Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao spoke to visiting Japanese guests including former Japanese prime ministers Mori Yoshiro and Tomiichi Murayama.China-Japan relation is facing good momentum of development and opportunities, and the Chinese government will continue its friendly policy towards Japan to develop friendly neighbouring relations of cooperation, Wen said.At the grand reception with 600-odd attendance, Chinese State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan said the China-Japan ties have witnessed ups and downs during the past 35 years, and now back to normal track for development due to joint efforts by both governments and peoples."Chinese and Japanese leaders kept frequent contacts and communication in the past year, reaching important consensus on the target of peaceful co-existence, long-lasting friendship, mutual cooperation and common development, which should be cherished by both nations," Tang said."China and Japan are facing bright future and shoulder responsibilities in developing bilateral ties," Tang said.China would like to work with Japan to continuously push forward bilateral relations for long-term and stable growth based on the three political documents and keeping in mind the spirit of "taking history as a mirror and looking to the future", Tang said.Echoing Chinese leaders' remarks, Mori Yoshiro and Tomiichi Murayama said Japan-China relations enjoy great improvement and development in the past year through joint efforts of both sides, and the two countries witness sound cooperation in fields of economy, culture, sports and youth exchanges.They suggested both countries take the opportunity of the 35th anniversary to step up strategic mutual-beneficial ties, keep high-level exchanges, and facilitate cooperation in the key areas such as environmental protection and energy saving.The Japanese guests also called on to promote youth exchanges and cooperation between localities, in a bid to cement mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

Visiting US Chief of Naval Operations Mike Mullen reaffirmed in Beijing on Tuesday that the United States will not support Taiwan independence and will adhere to the one-China policy."The United States will not support Taiwan independence or any unilateral move toward that direction on the part of Taiwan," Mullen told reporters at a press conference.As a guest of Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy commander Wu Shengli, Mullen arrived in China on August 17 for a friendly visit. He delivered a speech at a Chinese naval academy and observed naval exercises from on board a Chinese warship.During the visit, Mullen also met with Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan and Guo Boxiong, vice chairmen of China's Central Military Commission.China-US relations are one of the most important bilateral relations in the world, Cao told Mullen, noting that flourishing bilateral ties will not only serve the fundamental interests of the two countries and two peoples, but will also be conducive to the peace, stability and prosperity of the region and world as well.Agreeing with Cao's view on bilateral relations, Mullen said that US-China relations are very important and the dialogue between the two nations as well as the two militaries is "critical".Mullen, who has been nominated by US President George W. The government of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) logged 3.962 billion patacas (around 495 million U.S. dollars) in total revenue in January 2008, up 37 percent year-on-year, the government said.     The latest statistics released by the SAR government showed that a major share of the total revenue for January 2008 came from direct gaming taxes, which saw an increase of 30.9 percent year-on-year to 3.09 billion patacas (386 million U.S. dollars).     Thanks to the booming gaming industry in the island city, which has seen the opening of its 28th casino by the end of 2007, Macao's gaming taxes grew by 48 percent over the previous year to 29.3 billion patacas (3.7 billion U.S. dollars) in 2007, leading to an overall surplus of 21.8 billion patacas (2.7 billion U.S. dollars) in public finance, according to official statistics.     In its latest research report released Friday, the Bank of China Macao Branch forecast that due to the dynamic development of gaming and tourism industries and ballooning fixed-asset investment in the city, Macao's GDP will keep a growth rate of 13 percent in 2008, which is lower than the 27 percent rate of the previous year.

But in 2006, nobody was killed when there was a similar incident because emergency plans were in place and there had been drills.The work safety situation in China is grim despite a decline in the death toll over the first eight months of this year, Li said.Statistics showed 61,919 people were killed in various work accidents nationwide between January and August. This was 13.9 percent lower than over the same period last year.The number of major accidents with 10 or more deaths during the same period has dropped by 14.7 percent year on year.In response to the high number of fatal accidents the State Council Work Safety Committee has sent about 300 people, in 24 teams, to carry out safety checkups across the country, starting August 27 and ending September 20.

BEIJING - The number of commercial bribe cases dealt with by Chinese courts rose to 4,406 in the first seven months, an increase of 8.2 percent over the same period of last year, according to the Supreme People's Court (SPC) on Saturday.Xiong Xuanguo, vice-president of the SPC, said the number of cases featuring corporate wrong-doings rose 37.3 percent and cases relating to individual employees of companies jumped by 52.1 percent.Of the 3,748 commercial bribery cases that have been closed this year, 94.1 percent involved civil servants, Xiong said.A total of 31,119 commercial bribery cases were dealt with in China in the past two years before August 2007, with 7.079 billion yuan (US2.51 million) involved, said Li Yufu, deputy director of the leading group on anti-commercial bribery under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.
