Both sides also discussed major world and regional issues of common concern.Hu and Silva agreed to work together to deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. Chinese President Hu Jintao (L) and Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates hold a joint press conference in Lisbon, Portugal, Nov. 7, 2010. In France, Hu and his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy met for talks and agreed to make joint efforts to boost bilateral cooperation.Hu said in the talks that since diplomatic ties were forged 46 years ago, the China-France relationship has been characterized by its strategic and global nature and its ability to move with the times. The Chinese president called on both sides to continuously deepen mutual understanding by carrying out high-level visits and exchanges between governments, legislatures, political parties and regions. Both countries should advance with the times, be creative in practical cooperation, expand trade and try to double their trade volume by 2015, he said.During Hu's visit, China and France signed a host of cooperation agreements covering a wide range of areas, including nuclear energy, aviation, finance, energy efficiency, and environmental protection. On Thursday, China and France issued a joint statement on strengthening their comprehensive strategic partnership. The statement said the two countries should make a major contribution to peace, stability and development of the world, conform to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, promote multilateralism and respect the independent and sovereign choice for the development of each country.Analysts said that the Chinese president's state visits to France and Portugal have promoted not only bilateral cooperation, but also the development of China-Europe ties.

HANGZHOU, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official has urged members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) working in the country's non-public economic sector to work hard to make their companies into advanced and excellent businesses. The call was made by Li Yuanchao, chief of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, during a two-day study tour to Zhejiang Province, one of the regions where the non-public economic sector has been highly developed, on east China coast. The tour ended Friday.During his stay in Zhejiang, Li visited a number of non-public businesses in two cities of Huzhou and Hangzhou in order to gain a first-hand information regarding how CPC members in those ventures have been doing under a Party campaign which encourages CPC members to excel at their workposts. While addressing a symposium held Friday in Hangzhou, the provincial capity, Li said the non-public sector was "an important force for developing the socialist economy with Chinese characteristics."Li added that Party organizations and its members at non-public enterprises should try to ensure that their firms take a correct orientation of development.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama said Monday that China's rapid economic development is in the interest of U.S. economy."It's good for us that China has done well," Obama said at a town-hall-style meeting telecast live on CNBC before heading to Pennsylvania to raise money for a Democratic Senate candidate. His address is in line with U.S. Secretary of Treasury Timothy Geithner's testimony to the Congress last Thursday."We have very significant economic interests in our relationship with China," Geithner said, "a strong and growing China benefits the United States, just as a strong and growing United States is good for China."In responding to a question about China's currency issue, Obama said that China's currency is lower than the market says that it should be, but trade is in the benefit for both sides."I just want to make sure trade is good for American businesses and American workers," Obama said."We are going to continue to insist that on this issue, and on all trade issues between us and China, that it is a two-way street, " he said.Facing November elections shaped by voter anger at the sour economy, U.S. lawmakers are weighing bills that would slap sanctions on Chinese goods, amid accusations that China keeps its currency -- and thereby its exports -- artificially cheap. The Obama administration acknowledged that China's imports supported the global economy and contributed substantially to recovery around the world. With over 1.3 billion people and an economy continuing to grow at or near double-digit rates, China is the U.S.' fastest-growing major overseas market.China's record of bringing hundreds of millions out of poverty, building a rapidly growing middle class, and now its efforts to encourage growth led by domestic demand, ultimately mean more demand for American goods and services. In order to pull the economy out of recession, Obama launched National Export Initiative (NEI) in March and set the goal of doubling the U.S. export in five years and creating two million jobs in the country. The Obama administration is clear that the vast Chinese market is a crucial part to fulfill the goal."Increasing opportunities for U.S. firms and workers through expanded trade and investment with China will be an important part of the success of the President's National Export Initiative and our efforts to support job growth more broadly."According to the Treasury Department, China is a critical market for a broad range of American products, from agriculture, to manufacturing, to services.China was the largest market for U.S. soybeans last year, importing over 9 billion dollars. In the manufacturing sector, the United States has already exported nearly 3.5 billion dollars in aircraft to China this year alone, and U.S. exports of automobiles and parts to China have grown over 200 percent. The issues in China and U.S. economic relations and trade should be properly solved through consultations on an equal footing. Exerting pressure cannot solve the issue. Rather, it may lead to the contrary, China's Foreign Ministry said recently.

GUANGZHOU, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's first inter-city subway, linking two southern China cities hosting the 2010 Asian Games, started operations Wednesday. The 21-kilometer Guangfo Line connects Guangzhou City with Foshan City, both in the manufacturing hub of the Pearl River Delta region in Guangdong Province.Riders on the subway will find that the travel time between the two cities has been reduced from 90 minutes to 30 minutes, said sources with the subway company Guangzhou Metro. The line has 14 stations and a ride from end to end costs only six yuan (less than one U.S. dollar).Local authorities have been pushing for the increased integration of cities in the Pearl River Delta and consider the operation of the Guangfo Line a big step in that direction. The subway was purposely opened one week prior to the start of the 2010 Asian Games. The competitions will be held in Guangzhou, Foshan, Dongguan, and Shanwei.

BEIJING, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Millions of Chinese people vented their anger online Monday after Japan extended its detention of a Chinese fishing trawler captain, calling for a boycott of Japanese goods and asking the Chinese government to take stronger measures."They entered our territorial waters, destroyed our property (the fishing boat), and seized our citizens. What do you call that?" said "fenghuang802" in a message posted at bbs.ifeng.com."What the Japanese seized was not Zhan Qixiong, the trawler's captain, but the dignity of the Chinese nation," said "Li Weihua" at t.sina.com.cn."We must firmly boycott Japanese goods. They are making so much money from us Chinese while hurting us so deeply. If you're a good Chinese person, you won't buy Japanese goods," said "zzwghwgh" at tianya.cn."I hope the Chinese government adopts an even tougher attitude in tackling this issue. Don't let the public lose confidence," said "huoxing" at bbs.163.com.On Sept. 7, two Japan Coast Guard patrol ships and a Chinese trawler collided in waters off China's Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea, over which Japan also claims sovereignty. The Japan Coast Guard illegally seized the Chinese trawler and detained the fishermen and the captain on Sept. 8.The 14 Chinese crew were released last week, but the captain's continued detention sparked protests across the country Saturday, which also happened to mark the 79th anniversary of Japan's WWII invasion of China.China has summoned the Japanese ambassador five times and postponed scheduled talks on joint energy exploration in the East China Sea.A Japanese court announced Sunday the trawler captain's detention - which had been due to expire Sunday - would be extended by another 10 days, fueling the Chinese public's indignation.China's Foreign Ministry announced late Sunday Japan's refusal to release the trawler captain had "severely hurt" relations between the two countries. A ministry statement said China had canceled ministerial and provincial-level contacts with Japan, suspended talks on aviation issues, and postponed a meeting on coal."We demand the Japanese side immediately release the Chinese captain unconditionally," Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said in a statement."China will take strong counter measures if the Japanese side continues to act willfully and double its mistakes. Japan shall suffer all the consequences," Ma said.In addition, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wang Guangya made solemn representations to the Japanese ambassador to China, Uichiro Niwa, Sunday evening, expressing China's strong indignation.Chinese historians say the Diaoyu Islands have been part of Chinese territory since the early years of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
