SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Four people who were arrested during a border demonstration in 2018 celebrated a not guilty verdict Monday.Demonstrators gathered downtown Monday to support two clergy members and two female Army combat veterans who were arrested during the "Love Knows No Borders" event in December 2018. Faith leaders at the U.S.-Mexico border near Friendship Park and some 400 people were calling for an end to detaining and deporting immigrants and showing support for asylum seekers. The four arrested argued they were exercising their religious freedom and first amendment right to assemble and speak out against injustice. Combat veteran Brittany Ramos Debarros, who's standing trial, spoke to 10News following the verdict. "Took an oath to protect this constitution and I take that seriously. And what I see all around me is a disregard for what's right. A disregard for people's rights, including the right to protest peacefully on our own land, the land I supposedly defended," Debarros said. But federal agents showed video of the demonstration, arguing there were numerous no trespassing signs and they made numerous demands and warnings to stay out of the restricted areas or face arrest. One demonstrator, who was not in court Monday, was arrested for assaulting an officer at the rally. 1308

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Fixing San Diego’s streets was one of Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s top priorities when he took office, and now he believes they’re on schedule to reach his goal of repairing more than 3,000 miles of roads.About a decade ago, it took crews an entire year to get about 24 miles of street repairs done in the city. Now, crews are averaging 25 miles of street repair a month.Kris McFadden, director of San Diego’s Transportation & Storm Water Department, said the pandemic helped them get the work done without causing much backups on the roads.“We staggered working times, people coming in different times. So, we were able to do a lot of repairs, especially when people weren’t driving on the roads,” said McFadden.Faulconer said, “When I ran for mayor, there was no issue that San Diegans complained about more than streets, so we have been on a mission over the past six years to bring smooth streets to neighborhoods across the city. We overhauled the repair program to speed up fixes, made record investments in street repair, and are on pace to fix half of all City streets by the end of the year. The robust program we now have in place fixes hundreds of miles annually and I strongly encourage the next Mayor to keep the pedal to the metal until every San Diegan can experience a freshly paved street outside their front door.”In a news release, city officials said crews “completed repair work on some of the City’s busiest streets including completing repairs to North Harbor Drive, Fairmont Avenue, Montezuma Road, and a network of streets in Mission Bay that have not seen a major facelift in nearly two decades. Construction on Scripps Poway Parkway is underway and anticipated to be completed in December.”Even though the city is on track to repave half of the its entire street network by the end of the year, City Councilmember Vivian Moreno said there’s more work that needs to be done, specifically on dirt and gravel roads in neighborhoods like Stockton.Moreno sent ABC 10News a statement that read, in part: “These dirt streets are vestiges of the past maintained by policies that are over six decades old.”The city says they’re looking at this request, but the plan is to finish the repairs that have already been scheduled to meet the goal by the end of the year. 2308

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dozens of families and children with down syndrome were out at Crown Point Park in Pacific Beach for the first-ever Donut Run in San Diego. The money raised benefits Gigi's Playhouse which is a down syndrome achievement center. The center provides therapeutic and training programs for people of all ages. The services are completely free. Gigi's Playhouse has 37 locations across the country and even a few in Mexico. All of the staff are volunteers so donations are always welcome in order to continue providing the services. The goal was to raise ,000 but the organization doubled that goal.   667

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Del Mar may be the county's smallest city, but it has no shortage of workers commuting in every day to serve its residents and tourists. They're coming from as far away as Oceanside, La mesa, and Rancho Penasquitos. It's because the city - with a median home price of .7 million - has no affordable housing. "If they could live here and walk to work we'd get all kinds of benefits from that," said Del Mar Mayor Dwight Worden. To help make that happen, Del Mar may start charging developers of condos and condo conversions fees by the square foot. That could add to more than a hundred thousand dollars per project for affordable housing. Right now developers of those projects pay a flat fee of ,500, which hasn't been updated since 2007.The city council is considering a per square foot charge for existing construction and per square foot for new construction. The money would either go to expanding Del Mar's rent subsidy program, which currently assists five families in the city.Worden, however, said he prefers physical units because they are there forever. Del Mar currently has no affordable housing units, but the state requires it to have about 70. Worden said two currently proposed developments would include units, but he also would like the city to use the extra money to apply for federal and state grants. He also floated the idea of Del Mar buying an apartment building, converting them to condos, selling a portion of them to recoup its investment, and keeping some for low-income workers. 1571

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds are getting tested for coronavirus before Thanksgiving hoping to keep their family safe. Medical experts say it's not necessarily going to work. The lines were hours long in front of a Linda Vista testing site, just as long at sites around the county Sunday."There's a worrisome reason for that, people are planning to go visit their older relatives and they think they're going to be 100% safe," Dr. Davey Smith, Chief of Infectious Diseases at UC San Diego said getting tested Sunday or any day leading up to Thanksgiving could give you a false negative."If I get tested now, it doesn't mean that I'm not infected, it just means that I'm not actively shedding the virus," Smith said.According to the CDC the incubation period for the virus is 2-14 days."I thought Halloween was going to be the scary part of the year but November, December, January are just going to be really tough I think. We've got Thanksgiving coming up, then we have Christmas coming up and then New Year's and everybody is tired of being on lock down, it breaks my heart," Dr. Smith said leaning back in his chair.Data shows after each holiday this year, we've seen a spike in cases. The CDC and Dr. Smith urge everyone to gather virtually, or in small groups outside, socially distance and wash your hands often. We all know 2020 has been the year of sacrifices and Dr. Smith feels it too, "I'm really grateful for my niece who I have not met yet, because of the pandemic, I am so excited, I get pictures every day, so I'm pretty happy."All of us hopeful next year we can all be with our loved ones."If we can just get through the winter, I promise these vaccines and treatments are really going to change everything and that just means there will be more of us to celebrate next year," Dr. Smith said. 1811
