You see the spellers on the stage at Scripps National Spelling Bee, but there’s a critical player in the competition who you hear more than see.Dr. Jacques Bailly is the Bee’s official pronouncer, and to the spellers, he’s a celebrity. Participants lined up to meet the man many saw in the movie, Akeelah and the Bee, and who records the words many of them have studied.“It's really kind of an honor that they all come here, and they think I’m, you know, somebody famous and interesting to meet,” says Dr. Bailly. “We're here to honor them.”Dr. Bailly has a keen understanding of what the spellers are going through.He won the Bee in 1980 and has some tips for spellers taking the stage.“The way to spell a word you don't know: you spell it the way it sounds,” he advises. “Don't make a fancy guess. Don't assume there's a silent ‘Q’ because there aren't very many of those you know just felt the way it sounds. That's kind of the best guess.”His advice for beating the jitters?“I think a deep breath is one of the best things,” he says. “It's just, you know, to feel free, to get up there and go. Because it's amazing how that helps.”He believes competing in the National Spelling Bee opens doors for spellers to worlds they’ve never seen before at a critical age.“Doors to chemistry, doors to concert instruments, doors to culture of any sort,” he says. “It's the words that describe our world.”Dr. Bailly finds satisfaction in spelling, as well as sharing his passion with the next generation.“I just love doing this,” he says. 1542

"Tiger King's" Carole Baskin is reportedly getting her very own TV show.According to Variety, the unscripted show will follow the prominent cat activist and her husband Howard as they hunt down and call out anyone who abuses animals.The Baskin's will work with ITV America's Thinkfactory Media on the unnamed project.The New York Times said Thinkfactory would work on pitching it to networks to see if anyone will pick it up. 433

With schools in Michigan closed during the spread of COVID-19, Grand Traverse Academy Principal Michelle Floering still wanted to deliver good news to a student in person. Floering decided to pay a visit to student Kaitlyn Watson who was working at a drive thru restaurant in Traverse City, Michigan. Floering informed Watson in person that she is the school’s class of 2020 valedictorian. “Thank you so much, I am so excited,” Watson said.“I couldn’t wait to come tell you,” Floering responded. San Diego (KGTV)- Starting today, additional background checks are now required for people to buy ammunition. The system roll-out is leaving some store owners frustrated. "It's going to be a lot harder for us to come in and buy ammo," says customer George Garcia. The state law went into effect today, but it wasn't until 7 a.m. that the software went live. "It is frustrating because we had to wait until the day of for the law to go into effect and the system to be in place," says Danielle Rudolph, Director of Sales Operations at Poway Weapons and Gear Range. "Then we still have to train staff properly." The store must keep a record of the sales for five years. The customer must have California drivers license or ID and pay an additional fee before they can even get their hands on the ammo. "The basic ammunition eligibility check Is a dollar every time you buy. That is for people who have purchased firearms in California before," says Rudolph. "Then there's the standard one, that is . That is for anybody that has not purchased a firearm in California."Some activists believe the new law could save lives. A statement from San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention says in part: "This will help to prevent felons and those with illegal firearms from getting quick and easy access to high quantities of bullets, while allowing responsible gun owners who pass background checks to continue to purchase bullets."They also say the new law will make it harder for those planning mass shootings to stock up on ammunition. 1539
