According to an affidavit from Metro Nashville police, those bags belonged to 57-year-old Somphone Temmeraj. He flew to Nashville from Seattle. Around 7 p.m. Monday, both a K-9 and officers smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from three bags and saw a man come to pick them up. 285

YUBA CITY, Calif. (AP) — A California man whose suicide attempt left his face disfigured had successful facial transplant surgery 18 months later, and the lead surgeon estimates his face should be "pristine" in as little as three years.Cameron Underwood, 26, of Yuba City, had the 25-hour operation that involved more than 100 medical staff in January. Less than a year later, Underwood can speak intelligibly. He is golfing and has even gone skydiving, The Sacramento Bee reported Friday.Underwood appeared Thursday at a news conference at New York City's NYU Langone Health center, where he smiled and thanked medical staffers and his family for giving him a second chance at life."There have been so many amazing advances in surgery. I'm living proof of that. But it only happens because of special people like Will and his family," Underwood said referring to Will Fisher, his organ donor. Before Underwood's 2016 suicide attempt, he was employed as a welder and machine worker in Yuba City, as told by family members in a story this month in People magazine.Underwood had struggled with depression since adolescence and shot himself after a day of drinking, disintegrating the bottom of his face. With just 18 months between the initial injury and the surgery, Underwood's procedure represented the shortest wait time for a face transplant in the U.S., said the lead surgeon, Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez."We're able to take advantage of the most advanced technological procedures that exist, and we can do a lot of computerized planning before we do the operation," Rodriguez said at Thursday's news conference.Rodriguez estimated about three to five years until his face is "pristine."Underwood's body has shown no signs of rejecting the transplanted face so far, Rodriguez said."There was no way we could have ever taken him back to a normal life without a face transplant," the surgeon said.Underwood still lives in California but must continue to travel monthly to New York City to see the surgeon.Fewer than 50 face transplants have been performed worldwide, and fewer than 10 total or near-total operations have been performed in the United States.___Information from: The Sacramento Bee, http://www.sacbee.com 2221
is safe thanks to Good Samaritans at a gas station in Cambria, California. A group of civilians confronted the suspect, 24-year-old Victor Magana, after he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend and took off from San Jose with their daughter. Al Ashcroft, a man visiting the Central Coast from Oregon, recognized the suspect's vehicle, a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe, from the alert Monday morning at a Shell gas station. While he blocked the car in and called police, nearby men helped restrain the driver. "Four of us surrounded him and said, 'You're not leaving,'" Ashcroft said. Deputies say Magana locked his keys inside the car with the child while making a pit stop in Cambria. "He hit the window twice to try and break in and finally a guy bear hugged him from behind and I took the rock away," Ashcroft said. Witnesses say Magana bought snacks at the store and tried to break into his car to feed his daughter. "He kept screaming that he wasn't that guy, that it wasn't him and that his daughter hadn't eaten in six hours," said Tammy Hall. The little girl was strapped in the front seat the whole time civilians were attempting to restrain the father. Many are praising the people who stepped up to save her. "I am amazed that these men were able to hold him here and stop him from taking off. They were very brave. Heroes," Hall said. Both Magana and the girl are in custody. Magana will eventually be transferred back to Santa Clara County, according to authorities. According to NBC Bay Area, Magana's girlfriend suffered at least one stab wound. She was taken to a hospital where she remains in critical but stable condition. This article was written by Megan Healy for 1674
is reporting. Zimmerman's suit claims he was defamed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Mayor Pete Buttigieg two weeks ago on the anniversary of Martin's death. The suit is seeking 5 million in damages. NBC reported the suit claims that Warren and Buttigieg "defamed Zimmerman for political gain in misguided and malicious attempts to bolster their standings amongst African-American voters, all at Zimmerman’s expense.”Warren retweeted photos of Martin, and added, "My heart goes out to @SybrinaFulton and Trayvon's family and friends. He should still be with us today. We need to end gun violence and racism. And we need to build a world where all of our children—especially young Black boys—can grow up safe and free."Buttigieg's Feb. 5 tweet said "Trayvon Martin would have been 25 today. How many 25th birthdays have been stolen from us by white supremacy, gun violence, prejudice, and fear? 895
