"The last thing that they need to worry about is going online and finding the products that they really need to keep themselves safe at ridiculous prices."National brands remain in short supplyStan Beck, owner of a hardware store, said that even though national brands like Windex or Johnson are hard to find, off-brand products are often just as good."This is a basic product, like Windex, just a different brand," he said, pointing to a shelf of Brillo window cleaner in his store. Yes, they make window cleaner, and he says it works as well as Windex.Some items, though, are in such short supply that even generic versions are hard to find.For instance, toilet paper is now plentiful, but paper towel supplies remain tight. She has a shelf stocked with cleaning products that looks like a throwback to 2018.During our visit, she had Windex, Mr Clean, Spic n' Span, even a collection of N95 face masks, something that was impossible to find for five months.Mallory said many people don't realize that local hardware stores often have a much better selection than grocery or big box stores because of their group buying power, and the fact that fewer shoppers visit them for cleaning items.She said she can find almost anything, except those Holy Grail items: name-brand disinfecting wipes."We've tried ordering Lysol wipes," she said. "Absolutely. We're trying to keep up on what supplies we can. Some things are just not available."It's the same situation at grocery stores like Kroger.The spokeswoman for the nation's largest grocery chain, Kroger, Erin Rolfes said "our suppliers are continuing to work extra hours to keep up with the ongoing customer demand," but said shoppers buy out wipes and disinfectants the moment they are put on the shelves.So what can you do?Visit your grocery store midweek, first thing in the morning, when those wipes and other products are put out.Purchase store brands, or off brands, when you find them, especially when it comes to wipes and toilet cleaners.Visit your local hardware store, and get to know the manager. Thousands of athletes, coaches and spectators who attended a national cheerleading competition last month in Dallas may have been exposed to mumps, state health officials said.Approximately 230,000 people attended the National Cheerleaders Association All-Star National Championship, said C.C. Gonzalez-Kurz, public information officer for the city. More than 25,000 of those people were athletes and coaches, according to the NCA.No illnesses linked to the championship, held February 23 to 25, have been reported so far, state health spokesman Chris Van Deusen told CNN. Well, you'll want to clean off those cans before handing them out!Investigator reporter Jace Larson tested soda cans for bacteria, and what he found was pretty gross.The cans tested came from a variety of places, including grocery stores, convenience stores, vending machines and cans stored in a home. All but one of the cans tested had mold on it.The highest mold count was 600 colonies of mold. That can came from a grocery store.This type of exposure could make people with compromised immune systems or lung disease sick.To put that number of colonies into perspective-- a flooded home could have 2,000-plus colonies of mold, while a condemned home could have roughly levels around 36,000.However, microbiologist Helene Ver Eecke, with the Metropolitan State University of Denver, says the 600 colonies of mold isn’t really a cause for concern.“Regular microbial load that we are constantly dosing ourselves with everything that we touch with everything we breathe,” Ver Eecke says. “It's just part of being human.”One soda can did test for bacteria levels that would be slightly concerning. The can—purchased from a convenience store--had the highest levels, with 3,700 bacteria colonies on it.But compared to dry cereal mixes, which can have up to 100,000 bacteria colonies and deemed safe to consume by FDA standards, the colonies found on that can were significantly less."There was one sample that came from a convenience store that had a higher bacterial count than samples, which makes sense because they were probably stocked probably appropriate for people to wear gloves when stocking," explains Ver Eecke.If you’re worried about the amount of bacteria, Ver Eecke recommends seeking other options."There may be other options for you a bottle or other things to try to help keep you safe." 1901

Three Michigan middle school students were hospitalized Wednesday after they unknowingly consumed Cookie Crisp marijuana edibles, according to Warren police. Police say the eighth graders ate the cereal given to them by a ninth grader. The cereal reportedly contained marijuana oil. The students, who attend Michigan Math and Science Academy on Dequindre, consumed the cereal before school and later complained they were dizzy and lightheaded, according to police.The girls were sent to a nearby hospital. The older student has been detained by police. Police said parents of the victims and the principal were notified.  659
