SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Mesa Biotech, based in San Diego, has received FDA approval for its rapid COVID-19 tests that can produce results in about half-an-hour.“Our first kits are going out today to some of the health systems, county health departments, to validate the performance against the existing testing,” said Laura Dullanty, a marketing manager at Mesa Biotech. She said it will still take a few weeks before they will be able to deploy them widely to the health care providers who have requested the tests. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Isabel Rosales was brutally attacked and nearly killed by her husband in January 2018."It was life or death, my ex husband attacked me in front of my kids," said Rosales.Rosales was married for 16 years. She and her ex-husband moved from Chicago to San Diego for a fresh start. But Rosales says the abuse only got worse."Sexual abuse, verbal abuse, physical abuse, everything," said RosalesShortly after their 16-year anniversary Rosales told her Ex-husband she wanted a divorce. She barely made it out of the family home alive."I was getting ready to go to work and we had been arguing...his behavior had been kind of erratic over the last few weeks. I thought he was agreeing with me when he said it ends here. I thought he was getting his suitcase and leaving. He followed me into the bathroom and he stabbed me. I ran into the kid's room and he stabbed me in front of the kids who were sleeping. I was able to push him out of the way and I ran out of the house. Before I ran out of the house though he attacked me again at the front door. I knew if I didn't make it out of the door it was over and by the grace of God the door opened."Rosales was in the ICU at UCSD for three days with a breathing tube. She says she fought to stay alive for her three children and her mother, who was killed by her boyfriend in 2011."My mother was murdered by her boyfriend in Mexico. And my ex-husband attacked me in a very similar way."Rosales says she had what her mother did not. Help. Hers came in the form of Operation for Hope, a San Diego non-profit that helps provide emergency services to victims of domestic abuse. Rosales was given emergency shelter and money to pay for a divorce attorney."It helped me have a future. It gave me exactly what it promises- HOPE."Rosales has this advice for other survivors."I was ashamed to ask for help. I didn't know services like this exist. I am here to tell you there's great courage in asking for help and taking that first step... I hope and I pray to change one other person's world out there by sharing my story. My heart aches for those who do not make it like my mom, for those who do not know how to get out or where to go, for those that think an abusive relationship is normal. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In San Diego Comic-Con's first foray as an online-only event, fans experienced some benefits and pitfalls of a virtual convention.While fans had arguably the most access to Comic-Con content ever, there were still some aspects that couldn't be recreated digitally. At the same time, that's all right. Every panel was streamed on Comic-Con's website and most were made available on YouTube afterward for fans to catch. Exclusive content aired during panels also made their way onto the internet arguably faster than previous years. While the glitz of seeing stars, artists, and writers in person was missing, the heart of enjoying a panel for its presentation was still there.What didn't: ExclusivesAdmittedly, Comic-Con isn't just about exclusive merchandise. But many attendees enjoy being able to score gear that you'll only get at SDCC — for resale or to keep. However, when it came to exclusives, internet connection and website servers were at the will of how many people logged onto their site. While the convention did its best to showcase cosplayers online with a "masquerade ball" via Tumblr, it just isn't quite the same as being at the event in-person. What worked: Connecting with fansHosting Comic-Con online ensured fans can connect with their favorite comic book writers, artists, and even entertainers. Without having to manage a tight schedule of going location to location for panels and events, users could simply log on and watch a panel, win some free swag in some cases, or reach out to comic book writers and artists for commissions or to purchase their work. No walking through a packed Artist Alley or standing in line for a free t-shirt — though some may argue that's part of the appeal.What didn't: Recreating being thereSDCC made several activities available online ahead of the convention, like signs and badges to print out to dress your home for the event. A virtual exhibit floor was also offered online and while fun, was a bit tricky to navigate on your phone. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Kaiser Permamente employees in San Diego voted to join a nationwide strike against the healthcare giant starting Oct. 14. More than 4,000 members of OPEIU Local 30 supported the action, a union spokesperson said. Workers say they want to “protect middle-class jobs with wages and benefits that can support families.” Hundreds of positions would be affected, including x-ray, pharmacy, and surgical technicians, phlebotomists, optometrists, and housekeepers. “We believe the only way to ensure our patients get the best care is to take this step,” said Robert Sparrow, an x-ray technician. “Our goal is to get Kaiser to stop committing unfair labor practices and get back on track as the best place to work and get care. There is no reason for Kaiser to let a strike happen when it has the resources to invest in patients, communities and workers.” Picket lines will be established at Kaiser Permanente hospitals, medical office buildings, and other facilities in six states and Washington, D.C. Kaiser Permanente Chairman and CEO Bernard J. Tyson issued a statement which reads: “While the Kaiser Permanente management team was actively engaged in negotiations at the bargaining table, SEIU-UHW released a strike announcement on 9/16 – an overt effort to gain leverage in bargaining. “This has been an ongoing pattern during this entire process with SEIU-UHW, as they believe that an aggressive approach such as using negative corporate campaigning and threats of strike is the way to get a better offer than what our other unions have received. “We are in this situation because of the aggressive approach of SEIU-UHW leadership, but our approach remains the same: we are committed to offering a package that’s aligned with all of our other unions that keeps our employees among the best paid in wages and benefits in the industry.
