SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Wildfire season is here and county officials want to make sure San Diegans are prepared. As summer heats up and brush dries out, Cal Fire is urging everyone to create a wildfire action plan. According to the agency, the plan should be familiar to all members of your household well in advance of a fire. This includes making an emergency supply kit and creating an evacuation plan. If you’re unsure how to start preparing a wildfire action plan, Cal Fire has some tips. Create an evacuation plan that includes:· A designated emergency meeting location outside the fire or hazard area. This is critical to determine who has safely evacuated from the affected area.· Several different escape routes from your home and community. Practice these often so everyone in your family is familiar in case of emergency.· Have an evacuation plan for pets and large animals such as horses and other livestock.· A Family Communication Plan that designates an out-of-area friend or relative as a point of contact to act as a single source of communication among family members in case of separation. (It is easier to call or message one person and let them contact others than to try and call everyone when phone, cell, and internet systems can be overloaded or limited during a disaster.) Be Prepared:· Have fire extinguishers on hand and train your family how to use them (check expiration dates regularly).· Ensure that your family knows where your gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are located and how to safely shut them down in an emergency.· Assemble an Emergency Supply Kit for each person, as recommended by the American Red Cross. (See next section for details.)· Maintain a list of emergency contact numbers posted near your phone and in your emergency supply kit.· Keep an extra Emergency Supply Kit in your car in case you cannot get to your home because of fire or other emergency.· Have a portable radio or scanner so you can stay updated on the fire.· Tell your neighbors about Ready, Set, Go! and your Wildfire Action Plan. Cal Fire also offers tips on what to include in an emergency kit. Gavin Newsom named professional skateboarder Tony Hawk and television personality and actor RuPaul Charles to the 13th class of the California Hall of Fame. Hawk and Charles, both from San Diego, will be inducted alongside writer Maya Angelou, Olympic medalist soccer player Brandi Chastain, astrophysicist France A. Córdova, author Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, Reverend James M. Lawson, Jr., actor and comedian George Lopez, iconic chef Wolfgang Puck, and winemaker Helen M. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Wednesday’s boycott by the Milwaukee Bucks of the team’s own NBA playoff game follows through on players’ promise to use their platform to demand change and social justice.Six years ago, players pressed league brass to take action against racism ignited by vulgar bigoted comments made by then-NBA team owner Donald Sterling.In 2014, the Los Angeles Clippers players were planning to walk off the floor during Game 5 of the Western Conference playoffs versus the Golden State Warriors. Players on both sides said they were frustrated over the league's soft punishment on Sterling and demanded the owner be banned.With pressure mounting for swift action, Adam Silver, the league's newly appointed commissioner, banned Sterling for life just three days after the scandal broke averting the boycott.Coincidentally, the Milwaukee Bucks staged Wednesday's boycott during Game 5 of the Eastern Conference playoffs.In a 10-minute audio clip posted by TMZ, Sterling chastised then-girlfriend V.Stiviano for posting pictures online of herself with African-Americans, including basketball Hall of Famer Earvin "Magic" Johnson.Sterling made the comments during an argument with Stiviano, who is part African-American."In your lousy f***ing Instagrams, you don't have to have yourself with -- walking with black people," he said in the audio clip."If it's white people, it's OK?" asked Stiviano, according to the recording. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across the country, there have been reports of racial discrimination against the Asian Pacific Islander community (API), including here in San Diego County.Erin Chew said she was wrapping up her grocery shopping trip in San Marcos when a man made eye contact with her and began speaking loudly about Asians."He just looked at me and started talking extremely loud to his partner or wife Looking at me saying Chinese people eat all this dirty stuff, eating bats and everything," Chew explained. She said the man also said, "I blame all the Chinese people for bringing this virus into this country."The incidents are not just happening out in public."My organization, SDS U'S Filipinx and Filipinx-American organization Andres Bonifacio Samahan was recently Zoombombed by a group of unknown individuals slandering us," said SDSU student Cristal Ami.Video from the Zoom meeting shows a group of unknown people yelling things like, "All you Asians have coronavirus!"In San Leandro, hate-filled notes were left on several homes, one read, "You have until May 23, Saturday at 10:30 AM to leave this country. No Asians allowed."An online reporting center called Stop AAPI Hate has been documenting the number of reported incidents against Asian Pacific Islanders across the country.As of April 29, it has received 1,711 reports, including 28 across San Diego County.The incidents range from verbal harassment and shunning, to physical assault.The San Diego Asian Pacific Islander (SD API) Coalition is working with San Diego Council President Georgette Gomez and Councilmember Monica Montgomery to put a resolution in front of the entire city council that will address the racial discrimination locally.The resolution proposes that the city should document and report hate crimes through Stop AAPI Hate and work with SD API to use the reported information to create targeted education and provide resources to those affected personally.SD API also said the city council would encourage the city's Human Relations Commission to address and investigate reported incidents.The city council will vote to adopt the resolution on June 2. 2150

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two women are launching a new nonprofit, Black San Diego, to bolster Black-owned businesses locally.It started at a kitchen table over chips and salsa four years ago. Sheri Jones, a real estate broker, and physical education teacher Tinicia Smith wanted to create a hub for Black-owned businesses in San Diego.They created a Facebook group called Black San Diego and now they're more than 34,000 members strong."For the last four years we've been able to collect data and what we realize is that business owners haven't been able to sustain because they don't have the tools," Jones said.She first noticed the issue when she was running her real estate business and went to a conference. She said she was the one Black person there and it was uncomfortable."I knew when I was having trouble, others must be too," Jones said.This week, Black San Diego became official, registered through the government and they're excited to plan workshops to offer those tools to the community. Jones described the workshop as, "an 8-week course where they can go through and get business basics, book keeping, business taxes, really how to formulate their corporation."Newly Appointed Board Member and CEO of Growth 1031 Lance Growth said these workshops are crucial for black-owned businesses like his."I stumbled into my position.. I made so many mistakes and I just had to sit down and learn from those mistakes," he said. "I'm going to send my operations lady, and ask her to take some extra notes on accounting, on marketing, on filing correctly, but it's a really beneficial tool."The workshop costs 0 per business and the nonprofit is launching a donation campaign to sponsor local Black-owned businesses."If the dollar circulates in the Black community then we can unite and produce generational wealth and that's what we're here to do," Smith said.They hope to bring members of their community out and help them elevate their business, "they don't want to step in the front, not get criticized, not get caught up in the chaos.
