BEIJING, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- A senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC) vowed Friday to enhance bilateral ties with Estonia.Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made this pledge during his meeting with visiting President of the Parliament of the Republic of Estonia Ene Ergma in Beijing.Li praised the recent growth of relations and cooperation between the two nations, saying China values its ties with Estonia and regards the country as an important partner in the Baltic Sea region.China would work to increase the mutual political trust with Estonia, encourage the exchange and communications between the two business communities and strengthen the humanitarian exchange between the two peoples, Li said.Li recalled his visit to Estonia last September and applauded the close contact established between the CPC and the Estonian political parties, expressing his hope that the two sides could step up exchanges and cooperation based on the principles of independence, equality, mutual respect and non-interference in each other's internal affairs.He also briefed the Estonian guests about China's latest economic and social developments.Ergma, who was visiting Beijing at the invitation of Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo, said Estonia attaches great importance to its relations with China and is expecting to expand cooperation with China in fields such as biology and information technology.The Estonian parliamentary delegation arrived in China on Wednesday. BRUSSELS, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and EU leaders on Tuesday signed a first joint declaration on strengthening dialogue and cooperation on youth issues as the 2011 EU-China Year of Youth kicked off here.Androulla Vassiliou, EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, said at the opening ceremony that the year would open up new horizons for young people from Europe and China by enabling them to share experiences and learn from each other."I hope that such exchanges will inspire concrete ideas for cooperation and establish long-lasting partnerships," Vassiliou said.The opening ceremony was the first of a series of exchange activities to be held throughout the year in Europe and China. CANCUN, Mexico, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- China will not compromise on issues of principle at the ongoing UN climate change conference in Cancun, Mexico, the country's chief negotiator said on Saturday.Su Wei, the chief Chinese negotiator and head of the climate change department of China's National Development and Reform Commission, made the remarks in response to some parties' call for "compromise to make achievements.""All the parties want to reach substantial achievements at the Cancun conference, which can lay a solid foundation for the completion of 'Bali Roadmap' negotiations," Su told Xinhua in an exclusive interview."I think we can cooperate with other parties and even make compromises on some non-principle issues, but we will not compromise on the issues of principle, such as the continuation of the Kyoto Protocol, which is the basis for a package of agreements to be made in Cancun," Su said.The negotiator stressed that the developing countries have reached consensus on the principle issues. "We are keeping solidarity and trying to play a constructive role," he added.Su said some country's opposition to the Kyoto Protocol is no good news to the developing countries, and has exerted negative influence on the conference.Negotiators at the Cancun conference are trying to establish a replacement for the Kyoto Protocol, which obliges rich nations except the United States to cut greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 5.2 percent below 1990 levels by 2008-2012."At the end of the first week of the Cancun conference, there are some progresses in adaptation, finance, technology and mitigation for the developing countries, but it is hard to say if the progresses are final ones," Su observed.As for the rumors about a secret Mexican text, Su said that the president of COP16 has told the delegations from every country including China that Mexico will not put forward a secret text."As I know, Mexico, the host country of COP16, is always pursuing the principles of 'open, transparent and widening participation' for the climate negotiations this year. VIENNA, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese diplomat on Thursday urged relevant parties to step up diplomatic efforts to solve the Iranian nuclear issue."The Iranian nuclear issue is complicated and sensitive, therefore dialogues and negotiation are the only right way to solve the issue, " said Hu Xiaodi, China's permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna.Hu welcomed the forthcoming meeting between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany scheduled for next week in Geneva.The resumption of the talks would offer a new opportunity to promote the process of a diplomatic solution, Hu told a board meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).Hu noted that, as a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Iran enjoyed the right of peaceful use of nuclear energy and at the same time carried corresponding international obligations."We expect Iran to fully implement relevant resolutions of the Board and the Security Council and strengthen cooperation with the agency, so as to foster the confidence of the international community in the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, " he added.Hu also urged the IAEA to play a constructive role in implementing safeguards in Iran and promoting a proper solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.

BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's central bank warned about the risk of credit card related bad debt on Thursday as money owed 180 days past the due date was on the rise in the third quarter.Credit cards debt 180 days past the due repayment date stood at 7.92 billion yuan (1.19 billion U.S. dollars) by the end of the third quarter, up 8.5 percent from the second quarter, according to a statement released Thursday on the website of the People's Bank of China.Taking this into account, the central bank warned commercial banks to pay close attention to risks associated with credit card related bad debt.Money owed 180 days past the due repayment date accounted for 2.1 percent of the total amount of debt by the end of the third quarter, down 0.4 percentage point from the second quarter, according to the statement.
