HAIKOU, April 25 (Xinhua) -- China's fishery administration said on Sunday it had started regular patrols of the South China Sea, sending two vessels to take over from two others currently escorting Chinese fishing boats in the area."China Yuzheng 301 and 302 take over from China Yuzheng 311 and 202, which have been patrolling the sea area of Nansha Islands since April 1," said Wu Zhuang, director of Administration of Fishery and Fishing Harbor Supervision for South China Sea under the Ministry of Agriculture.He said the patrol ships were sent to escort Chinese fishing boats in the South China Sea and reinforce China's fishing rights of the waters around Nansha Islands.The two ships set sail from Sanya, a coastal city in China's Southernmost Island Province of Hainan, on Sunday.China's patrol vessels escort the country's fishing boats and help treat fishermen who fall ill, Wu said. BEIJING, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Clean energy projects, specifically new energy vehicles, energy-efficient construction and clean coal technology, are the key areas of science cooperation between China and the United States, a Chinese official said here on Monday.According to a new agreement between the two countries, they will invest in joint laboratories, and support research in related areas, Cao Jianlin, vice minister of science and technology of China, told a news briefing on the second China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogues."Both China and the U.S. are the major car production and consumption countries thus both seek to develop new energy vehicles," said Cao.China is the biggest construction market in the world and a major coal consumption country, while the U.S. is also eyeing energy conservation in construction and coal consumption, he said.The U.S. is a country with advanced technologies, and China also has cutting-edge technologies regarding energy applications. The complementary cooperation between the two will benefit both Chinese and American people, Cao added.

YUSHU, Qinghai, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese authorities are working to protect the quake survivors in the northwestern province of Qinghai from potential secondary disasters.The government has provided sufficient food, drinking water and tents for more than 200,000 quake survivors, but landslides, floods and disease outbreaks may still threaten their lives.The magnitude 7.1 quake has killed at least 2,220 people, with 70 still missing and more than 12,000 injured.Recent rain has raised the risk of landslides as the devastating quake and aftershocks has destabilized mountain slopes. The rainy season starting in late May or early June will make the situation worse.A total of 139 survivors were evacuated to safety 7 km away from their make-shift homes in Changu Village of the quake-hit Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Region early Tuesday morning as rain-triggered landslides threatening their safety."It's still an arduous task to prevent and guard against secondary disasters," said Wang Jianbin, deputy director of the Qinghai provincial land and resources bureau.

SIRTE, Libya, March 27 (Xinhua) -- China expects that the Arab summit in Libya can coordinate the inter-Arab relations and make achievements in the Palestinian cause, a senior Chinese diplomat said here on Saturday."We hope the Arab countries could coordinate internal relations and achieve positive results in reconciliation among Palestinian factions as well as the resumption of Palestinian-Israeli talks at the summit," said China's Special Envoy to Middle East Wu Sike in an interview with Xinhua on the sidelines of the 22nd Arab Summit in the Libyan city of Sirte.As a special representative of Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Wu attended the opening ceremony of the summit at the invitation of the Arab League Secretariat. He transmitted a letter of Chinese President Hu Jintao to the Arab leaders."I will convey a strong message of China that we attach great importance to relations with the Arab world, and wish to promote further developments of such relations in the future," Wu said.Wu said China and the Arab world have a long history of friendly relationship. JI'NAN, March 31(Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese legislator has called for greater efforts to promote women's awareness and ability to safeguard their legitimate rights and interests.Chen Zhili, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, made the remarks during a week-long inspection tour of the eastern Shandong Province ending Wednesday.Chen was sent by the top legislature to inspect how local law enforcement agencies implemented the Law on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of Women.The law, which took effect on Dec. 1, 2005, had played an important role in protecting women's legitimate rights, raising their social status and mobilized them in the country's modernization drive in an active and innovative manner, she said.She called for more efforts to publicize the law to make people aware of the law's significance in protecting women's rights.Chen, also chairwoman of the All-China Women's Federation, said Chinese women faced challenges such as discrimination and a lack of labor rights.
