SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman is taking legal action against a trendy hair product company, claiming it caused her severe hair loss and bald spots. She’s not alone. Women around the country are claiming similar effects. They blame their hair care nightmares on Monat Global, based in Florida.“It’s been so hard,” says San Diego’s Dana Sohovich. She held back tears as she spoke exclusively with 10News about her experience. Sohovich has filed a class action lawsuit against the company, alleging it falsely promised her “longer, fuller, stronger” hair. Her suit accuses Monat of “false and deceptive advertising”.“I literally had almost a baseball size [ball] of hair in my hand,” she tells us, adding, “It's devastating.”PHOTOS: Monat users report hair and scalp damageTemecula’s Ashley Slayden showed us her daughter’s scalp. “You can see the bald spots [on] her head. You can see how thin it is. It was never that thin,” she adds. Slayden tells us she and her kids starting using the product in the fall. “I bought it at wholesale and I spent seventy dollars,” she adds. As of now, Slayden has not filed suit against the company.Other women have shared pictures of scalp sores, breakage and clumps of fallen strands. 1239

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego veteran and father is defending his son's right to sit during the national anthem.Ray Everett is responding to a letter sent to Lincoln High School's principal, complaining that students on the basketball team were sitting and talking during the national anthem.The man who wrote the letter is a U.S. Air Force veteran and grandfather to a player on the opposing team. Another parent who was offended used her phone to film the students sitting."At the end of the day our students do not have to stand," said Everett. "But you will not make them feel like they did something wrong. They did not harm anyone and they did not break the law."Everett was in the U.S. Army for 15 years. He says he served his country in order to protect the rights of Americans, including the right to sit during the national anthem.Everett's brother-in-law, Antoine Jarvis, says while he was offended by the letter he respects everyone's right to their own opinion. "I think that the biggest challenge in voicing your opinion is when you're close-minded to other's opinions," said Jarvis. "When you're close-minded to their beliefs."Jarvis says he no longer stands during the national anthem after learning more about its history. He only asks that others respect his right to do so.The principal of Lincoln High School, a veteran himself, has been responsive to complaints and plans to sit down with the veteran who wrote the letter about the student's actions.On Thursday the San Diego Unified School District sent a statement to 10News:Public school districts do not have the authority to require students to observe patriotic or religious rituals in the classroom or at school functions. We believe in our students right to free-speech, but also encourage students to be respectful in the way they choose to exercise their rights.School Administration is reaching out to the students involved and taking the opportunity to use this as a teachable moment. 1986

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A street in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter is shutting down starting Thursday for bars, restaurants and other businesses to create more space for customers.From Thursday to Saturday, Fifth Avenue will be closed between G and L streets as a way to help break up potential overcrowding as downtown businesses reopen.The street closure will start at 11 a.m. on Thursday and Friday, with “Curbside Gaslamp” running from 3 p.m.-12 a.m. on both days. 469

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A winter storm warning has been issued for the mountains in San Diego County ahead of a strong winter storm expected to move in Monday night.The winter storm warning goes into effect from 7 p.m. Monday to 10 p.m. Tuesday.Snow accumulations are expected to be anywhere between six to 12 inches with difficult travel conditions expected, warned the National Weather Service.More than a foot of snow is expected above 6000 feet with accumulation between 4000 and 6000 feet expected to be four to eight inches and accumulations between 3000 to 4000 feet expected to be between two and four inches.The National Weather Service also said snow is expected to fall to 2000 to 2500 feet Tuesday.  RELATED: Ski Reports | Today's Forecast | Traffic conditions | Strong winds, light snow hit Laguna Mountains In addition to heavy snow, winds could top out at 50 miles per hour.The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department says mountain residents should be prepared for crowds as families from low-lying areas travel to snow-packed mountains.Area businesses also say they typically see an influx in visitors during snowy periods.An employee with the Julian Lodge Bed and Breakfast says visitors usually come from San Diego, North County, Los Angeles and that the lodge has even hosted visitors from as far away as China and Japan.In San Diego, 280 beds are being made available downtown as cold winter temperatures are set to swiftly fall over the county after sunset.Father Joe’s Village will house 250 people at its building on 1501 Imperial Avenue. Check-ins will also be made available throughout the night with meals also being provided.As many as 30 others will be sheltered at the PATH San Diego/Connections Housing Shelter at 1250 Sixth Avenue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A three-year-old girl being evaluated for coronavirus at Rady Children's Hospital has tested negative for the virus.Frank Wicinski confirmed to 10News that his daughter Annabel has tested negative for the novel coronavirus. CDC confirmed the results.Wicinski says he and his daughter will now be returned to MCAS Miramar to finish out their 14-day quarantine. He adds that his wife is doing well after testing positive for coronavirus.Wicinski and his daughter plan to fly home to Pennsylvania, then get his wife out of Wuhan when they're able to. To help pay for the flight back to Pennsyvania, as well as the flight they took to get out of Wuhan, he has started a GoFundMe page here.Two flights carrying more than 200 passengers landed at the San Diego base this month. Many of their quarantines are set to end next week.
