SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two people were found dead Sunday morning after authorities responded to multiple 911 calls of a capsized boat off the coast of Ocean Beach.Authorities received a call about the incident around 3:30 a.m. When they arrived, authorities found a 28-foot vessel overturned along the shore with two mean deceased nearby."About a 28 foot vessel overturned in the shore, on the sand," says SD Fire & Rescue Lt. Maureen Hodges. "We do have two victims that were down on the sand."The incident happened shortly after 3:30 Sunday morning. Customs and Border Protection officers told ABC 10News the boat capsized off the shore, throwing the two people into the water. There's still no word on if any other people were in the boat.Border Patrol also responded to the incident along with San Diego Police, lifeguards, and San Diego Fire-Rescue. CBP believes this is the latest incident to involve a human-smuggling effort gone horribly wrong. So far in the 2020 Fiscal Year, there have been 210 incidents involving these kind of "panga" boats off the coast of San Diego. The record was set in 2013, when CBP responded to 243 such incidents. With two months left in the fiscal year, 2020 is on pace to break the record.ABC 10News asked if the rise in panga boat incidents could be related to border closures because of the coronavirus, forcing would-be smugglers to turn to the water. CBP officials won't speculate on an official reason. The search continues for anyone else who may have been on the boat. They ask anyone with information about Sunday morning's incident, or any others, to call 619-278-7031. 1622

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With California setting single-day records this week for COVID-19 cases, experts say it’s important to keep in mind that some activities carry a higher risk of transmission than others. To gauge risk, it’s helpful to think of it like an equation, said Dr. Tyler Smith, a professor and epidemiologist at National University.First, consider the environmental factors like whether the activity will be indoors or outdoors and the number of people likely to be present. Then consider the likelihood of successful safety measures: whether people will wear masks, clean surfaces, and maintain six feet of distancing.Compare those two datapoints, and you can assess the overall risk of an activity, Smith said.A good example of the importance of this equation is the dentist’s office, our experts said.On one hand, the environmental risk factors are high. Working in someone’s mouth with drills can aerosolize particles that carry the virus. But dentists are likely to strictly observe public health countermeasures like personal protective equipment and sanitization, to balance out the risk equation.“Our doctors offices and dental offices are really some of the safest places right now,” said Dr. Georgine Nanos, a family physician who specializes in epidemiology.Dr. Smith agreed: dental offices are low risk. The likelihood that participants will wear masks is a critical part of the safety equation, according to Dr. Nanos.“What [the medical community] didn’t know four months ago is that wearing a mask can reduce the risk of transmission and catching COVID-19 by sometimes up to 60 percent if both people are wearing masks,” she said.Gyms are an environment where some may try to avoid wearing a face covering during a challenging workout.“If you can be 6 feet apart from your neighbor, that would be ideal. I wouldn’t recommend a hot yoga class where people are crowded together and not a lot of ventilation,” Dr. Nanos said.If you can maintain distance and bring your own sanitizer, ideally in a room with high ceilings and good ventilation, Dr. Nanos grades gyms medium risk.In the high-risk category, experts agree bars pose a particular challenge. Not only is there a chance you could encounter a large crowd indoors, alcohol could discourage social distancing efforts. Also high risk: casinos. In addition to alcohol, casinos have an environment with a lot of touchpoints like slot machines and chips. Many also allow indoor smoking, which could complicate health matters, Dr. Nanos pointed out.But the highest risk activity, according to both experts, is protests and rallies.“That many people together, not distancing, rarely wearing masks and yelling,” Dr. Smith said, That to me is terrifying as a public health professional.”They put large protests and rallies at the top because unlike other environments, there is no one in charge with a financial stake in maintaining public health countermeasures.Dr. Smith said any of these activities have the potential to be operated safely.“It just has to do with people realizing they have to adhere to these mandates. If so, all these things can be open. We’ll still have cases but it won’t overwhelm our healthcare system,” Dr. Smith. 3212

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Young adults in the U.S. are moving more frequently than they did in 1960, according to a new report by Zillow. Data from San Diego, however, paints a different picture. According to the site, 33.8 percent of young adults in 1960 lived in their current home for less than two years. In 2017, more than 45 percent of young adults had lived in their current home for less than two years. San Diego, however, bucks the trend. In America’s Finest City, in 2017 the share of young adults who lived in a home less than two years is 50.6 percent, down from 54.4 percent in 1960. The data show that young San Diegans are moving less than in 1960. Among young adults who recently moved in the San Diego area, more than 68 percent moved within the metro, while 9.4 percent moved from a different metro in the state and 22.3 percent moved from outside the state. According to Zillow, changes in workplace norms have contributed to the changes in housing tenures. Zillow also says that, rather than climb the corporate ladder, many young adults move from one role or job to the next. The typical employed Millennial has been with their current employer for 2.8 years, according to Zillow. 1205

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Video taken Tuesday shows people climbing on top of the border fence near Friendship Park as the migrant caravan approaches.According to a Border Patrol spokesperson, agents are keeping watch on the U.S. side of the park, but aren’t aware of anyone climbing all the way over onto the U.S. side of the beach.Border Patrol says it’s technically not legal for people to sit on the fence because it’s on U.S. soil, but no arrests are being made at this time.RELATED: CBP closing lanes in San Ysidro, Otay Mesa as migrant caravan approachesIt’s unclear whether or not the group is with the migrant caravan. The incident comes as U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced the closure of several northbound border lanes in San Ysidro and Otay Mesa. The closures are expected to cause delays. 818

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Wells Fargo Bank officials are offering a ,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for robbing three San Diego-area banks. The string of robberies started September 11 at the Wells Fargo Bank, located at 5522 Balboa Avenue in Clairemont, followed by a second theft October 6 at the branch located at 276 N. El Camino Real in Encinitas. In a release, FBI and the San Diego Violent Crimes Task Force officials said they believe that the same individual, described as a white male in his 50s-60s, is responsible for both robberies."In each robbery, the robber approached the teller and presented a note demanding money from the bank in a similar manner," said FBI special agent Davene Butler.Images from those robberies show the suspect wearing a hat and sunglasses. Each time, the robber was provided a sum of cash and departed the bank on foot, Butler said. 946
