SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A surveillance system caught a man breaking into a College Area Thai Restaurant and stealing hundreds of dollars in cash and tech equipment. 10News met with Chira Svangvitaya, owner of "Sala Thai." She has been serving dishes from her homeland to the San Diego community for almost 30 years. But when she opened the store on Halloween morning, she found her store in shambles. “I saw all the things all over the floor," Svangvitaya said. MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodHer surveillance cameras captured the break-in just before 7 a.m.  A man crept in through the back door, ran through the dining area while pulling up his hood, then headed straight to the front counter. He took 0 in cash, five tablets, and a laptop before tiptoeing out the back door. "He was like a pro," she said. “In and out in less than five minutes.”While the stolen money was substantial, the absence of the tablets hurt her most.“I have Uber Eats. Grub Hub, Postmates, Door Dash, Amazon, and Yelp," she said.She said 30 percent of her sales come solely from deliveries, which means she is losing out on a lot of customers. But she said there is a silver lining to this. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A small San Diego biotech is trying to give face masks an added layer of defense by spraying the liner with a biological bait designed to be a mousetrap for the coronavirus.AXIM Biotechnologies is also developing a next-generation rapid antibody test that the company says is the first of its kind to detect “neutralizing antibodies.” The neutralizing antibody test should be available for sale in the next few weeks, said CEO John Huemoeller.Both the test and the surgical mask are based on the same technology: a synthetic protein AXIM created that mimics ACE2.ACE2 is a receptor protein found in your body on the surface of cells. The coronavirus likes to bind to it to infiltrate cells, so the company decided to coat the inner lining of a surgical mask with the protein as an added barrier.“They lock to each other just like they do in your body. They lock on the mask. So when we spray the mask with that virus-binding protein, it's there permanently. It can be washed. It's not coming off,” Huemoeller said.“That's the whole idea is to get [the virus] to bind to something, so it cannot go into your respiratory system,” he added.AXIM’s mask is still a ways off from hitting the market. Huemoeller said it needs to undergo further testing to get FDA approval and the company is still looking for a manufacturing partner. The company is hoping to release the enhanced mask by the middle of next year.“We’re hoping that maybe [the FDA will] steamline it because this is something that can save lives,” Huemoeller said.With fewer than 10 scientists, AXIM is a small biotech based in Sorrento Valley. But the company thinks it's poised to be at the center of the second wave of antibody tests for so-called neutralizing antibodies.“When the FDA got our application they didn't know what neutralizing antibodies were. And now everybody's talking about neutralizing antibodies,” said Huemoeller.Not all antibodies function the same. Some antibodies bind to the virus but still allow the pathogen to infiltrate cells. Other antibodies, called neutralizing antibodies, bind to the virus and actually prevent further infection.AXIM’s lateral flow assay antibody test, dubbed Tru-19, takes a drop of blood and can return results in 10 minutes to determine if someone has neutralizing antibodies, according to Huemoeller.In addition to uses at doctors’ offices, the company said the test would have immediate applications at labs processing convalescent plasma.Since as many as one-third of people who recover from COVID-19 do not produce neutralizing antibodies, Huemoeller said the test could help determine which patients would be optimal candidates to donate plasma. 2693

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After a deadly house fire in Logan Heights, 10News spoke with a retired fire captain on fire safety checks that can protect you and your family.Bob Lyon is a retired fire captain and knows the tragedy that can come with burglar bars in the Logan Heights neighborhood, "something that they're using for protecting their lives, ends up being something that costs them their lives."A Fire Code adopted in the late 1990's requires bars have a safety latch. "You put your foot on it, and it releases the bars because there's a little spacer in it and it will pop them, and the bars are supposed to swing open," Lyon said.RELATED: One dead, five injured in Logan Heights house fireMany homes still have old bars, or those with the safety mechanism can rust, locking them in place. "Rarely do people maintain those, just because they're something out of sight, out of mind," Lyon said solemnly.Neighbor Miguel Hernandez a few doors down from the deadly Sunday morning fire told 10News in Spanish he checks his home's bars often to ensure the security of his family. He added he checks the smoke alarms as well, changing the batteries the recommended 6-months or each year.Lyon said one more thing you can do is "sleeping with your bedroom doors closed because that helps compartmentalize and keeps the fire out of your room, gives you more time to get out."It also gives firefighters more time to get to you.Lyon said firefighters learn how to break through burglar bars in the academy, but it takes precious time. 1534

"But innocent people have been dying for the past eight years. So to us, especially the Kurds, this was a positive."Most of Salih's family has fled to Europe, trekking weeks at a time with little to eat."Everyday we're concerned that we're not going to hear from (my aunt) anymore, so every day that I hear her voice is a relief that they're still alive."Salih says she hopes her aunt will be able to come to the U.S. Someday.She also hopes that U.S. involvement will open the eyes of the rest of the world, making them realize that atrocities are happening in her home country. "I do appreciate being here," she said.
