A 66-year-old woman was arrested and preliminarily charged Wednesday with driving into protesters in Indiana.According to the Associated Press, the woman police arrested was Christi Bennett.Hundreds of people were rallying and protesting through Bloomington Monday, following an alleged racist attack at Lake Monroe where several men attacked and apparently attempted to lynch Vauhxx Booker, a Monroe County Human Rights commissioner.Police say an electric scooter had been left in the roadway and a red Toyota passenger car drove up to it. A male passenger then got out and threw the scooter out of the lane of travel. That's when police say a woman approached the vehicle and stood in front of it with her hands on the hood.The vehicle then began to accelerate, according to police, causing the woman to go up onto the hood of the car. A man then grabbed the car and clung to the side of it as it accelerated rapidly on Walnut Street. The man and woman remained on the vehicle until it turned abruptly onto eastbound 6th Street, throwing both people off, according to police.Police say the owner of the car was staying at a motel in Scottsburg, Indiana. They traveled to Scottsburg and detained the man and woman involved. The man was interviewed and released. Bennett was transported to the Bloomington Police Department to be interviewed, but she and her legal counsel declined to provide a statement.She was arrested on the following preliminary charges:Criminal Recklessness, level 6 felony (two counts)Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, level 6 felonyLeaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Bodily Injury, class A misdemeanor.Bennett was released on a 0 cash bond within a couple of hours, the AP reported.Bennett has not been formally charged.The Associated Press contributed to this story.WRTV's Matt McKinney first reported this story. 1896

(KGTV) -- The controversial immigrant caravan is inching it's way closer to the San Diego border, with at least 132 people already in Tijuana. Many of the migrants plan to walk across the pedestrian bridge in San Ysidro and turn themselves in to the customs officers. The group of more than 600 has ridden trains and walked for miles to get to the United States - Mexico border.  Enrique Morones and his team - known as Border Angels - are sending supplies to Tijuana. "The Border Angels have been very supportive, we've had people on the caravan, we have been collecting items for the caravan," he said. "These people that are coming on a caravan are escaping a situation in their country that they're seeking refuge from. Let's welcome that stranger. Give me your poor, your tired your huddled masses."Jorge Nieto, a journalist following the immigrants' journey, says they have been arriving in Tijuana in small groups - 50 to 100 at a time.Nieto was told that once the whole group is together, they'll cross all at once. The caravan hasn't been without controversy.President Trump tweeted this week, saying he instructed the secretary of homeland security to keep the large caravan out of the U.S., and asked Mexico to keep the immigrants from going through the Country. RELATED: Migrant caravan heads to US-Mexico border "They're trying to escape something. Either hunger or violence or some sort of a war that's going on," Nieto said. "One of the reasons that they go in caravans is there's a power in groups. (KGTV) -- Rios Elementary School in the Cajon Valley Union School District is one of only a few districts that took advantage of the state waiver program to reopen for in-person learning this fall and is the largest in the state to qualify for one.More than 200 students attend Rios in-person, five days a week.Principal Liz Loether says despite low case numbers, they're seeing the effects of Covid, and they're trying their best to help students cope as they get back to school, but still face the challenges presented by the pandemic.Loether says those symptoms are showing up as social-emotional difficulties, reactions to frustration, levels of patience, and learning loss.At Rios they've leveraged the resource of extra space to spread out their more than two hundred kids. They have teachers rotate instead of kids to minimize contact outside cohorts.Another resource is technology. Rios was the first computer science elementary school in the country, and several years ago, the superintendent made it a priority for each of the 17-thousand students in CVUSD to have a Chromebook computer.It proved to be crucial foresight when the pandemic left many other districts scrambling to get tablets and computers into students' hands.It also meant none of the money schools got from the government was needed to buy computers."It did give Cajon Valley an advantage," says Board of Trustees Vice-President Jim Miller. Miller also says to qualify for the waiver to reopen, significant planning and coordination were required, with parents and with the teachers' union.Both Miller and the superintendent, Dr. David Miyashira, talked about trust and a sense of the community "buying-in" to the push to go back to school in person this fall.In CVUSD schools, two out of three students qualify for free or reduced-cost meals, and many of the parents are frontline or essential workers.Many Cajon Valley schools are open in a hybrid model, but there are several like Rios which are open five days. Some of the schools are providing full-day free daycare as well for frontline workers and for school staff.Roughly 20% of families have opted to do online learning full-time, but overall, the feedback they've received, he says, has been very positive.He adds that they've heard from districts across the country who have asked for advice on how to replicate their model successfully."I'm personally very proud of Cajon Valley," says Miller. 2441

A 29-year-old man who deliberately drove a car into a crowd outside Britain's Houses of Parliament has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, the Metropolitan Police in London said Saturday.Salih Khater of Birmingham, a Sudanese-born UK national, is scheduled to appear in court Monday, police said in a news release.Three people were hurt early Tuesday when the car collided with cyclists and pedestrians as well as police officers before crashing into barriers outside Parliament, police said. Brad Sherman, (D-CA), said Thursday he will reintroduce articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, the LA Times reported.The articles of impeachment for high crimes and misdemeanors were cosponsored by fellow Democratic Rep. Al Green of Texas. Sherman originally filed articles of impeachment in July 2017 claiming the president had obstructed justice in the Russian investigation."There is no reason it shouldn’t be before the Congress," Sherman told the LA Times.
