Everyone on board has a specialized skill, but because of the isolation that comes with being underwater for long periods of time, everyone has to take on multiple roles. When it's time to eat, the culinary specialists use the limited supply of ingredients to make every meal and also bake things like fresh bread and cookies pretty often. "We don't carry a lot of pre-made bread because it takes up too much room so a lot of our bread is made fresh a lot of our cookies are made fresh so its a pretty good," Witte explained. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Visitors and locals are expected to flock to San Diego beaches this Fourth of July weekend.While some beaches will close in California for the holiday weekend, San Diego County officials will keep local beaches open.San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said no COVID-19 community outbreaks had been linked to beaches, and without the data, it would not make sense to close them off.According to Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer, leaders of San Diego’s coastal communities said they believe they can manage the enforcement of social distancing and facial coverings this weekend.Longtime Solana Beach residents Richard and Lori Brenckman are frustrated by the idea of crowds flocking to the beaches during a pandemic.“The general public has shown that it’s not trustworthy to social distance,” said Lori Brenckman. “They want to gather, and most people have proven that they won’t follow the rules.”Beachgoers are required to maintain social distancing and wear a facial covering when they come within six feet of someone not from the same household. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Students at some private schools in San Diego returned for on-campus learning Tuesday.The Academy of Our Lady of Peace in Normal Heights is one of them. The 138 year-old Catholic, all-girls high school is the oldest in San Diego.Solana Musicant is excited to start her senior year."I think this is kind of the new normal, I think getting used to it now is really good," said Musicant.Head of School Dr. Lauren Lek said they began preparing for this day as soon as the school year ended."It's about layer upon layer of safety," said Lek.Those layers include face mask requirements, social distancing, and temperature checks upon entry."From our plexiglass desk to 6 feet physical distancing to make at all times to only eating outdoors to even our UV lights that are on in our buildings to help make sure all bacteria and viruses are cleaned out before the air comes into the classrooms," said Lek.Lek says the changes cost more than half a million dollars. SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. (KGTV)— With precipitation numbers up, participation numbers were down for outdoor events around San Diego County. But many who chose to endure the rain said it was worth the extra splash. It’s a rare sight in the heart of San Diego: kids sledding on a giant snowy hill at Montgomery Waller Park. For the Murillo family, it’s an annual tradition. “We go to see Santa Claus, we go to the little stores that they have there, and we come to sled down for a little bit,” mother Diane Murillo said. She and her children were bundled up while having fun at San Diego Snow Day. But this year, Murillo noticed that the crowds were much smaller. “It’s a lot smaller. It’s empty today. There’s actually parking,” Murillo laughed. She said the steady rain discouraged many folks from showing up. The City of San Diego even had to cancel Santa Claus’ helicopter fly-over of the park, due to inclement weather. Murillo also noticed that the snowy hill was very sludgy, and only about half its normal length. But by the looks of the children, the event was still worth it. Meanwhile, in the South Bay, there was a tent full of Christmas-themed games. From Candy Cane trees, ring tosses, to face paint, families enjoyed the free entertainment at the Chula Vista Children’s Faire. “It helps, because that way, we’re not getting wet while they are getting their stuff done and doing the activities. So it’s nice,” mother Felice Navarro said. Her neighbor invited her and her children to join them at the fair this year. The kids also had an option to splash around if they wanted, as they ran through an obstacle course as Chula Vista junior firefighters. Fun was not just reserved for children. Up at Liberty Station, hundreds of people waited in line to join the San Diego BBQ and Beer festival. 25-year-old Victoria Ransom was not going to let the rain dampen her birthday celebration. “We wanted to be able to double fist if that was a possibility. Hands-free rain protection,” Ransom joked.
