SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Jewish leaders celebrated the second night of Hanukkah Monday, lighting the second candle of a massive Menorah outside City Hall.As the second night of the Jewish Festival of Lights got underway, Rabbi Zalman Carlebach said it was important for leaders to show their support and celebrate in light of recent anti-Semetic incidents around the U.S. "In light of the current events that are happening around the country, this world could use some more light. America could use some more light," said Rabbi Carlebach.San Diego has numerous Menorah lighting events planned as well as other celebrations throughout the county as Hanukkah continues — running through Dec. 10. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's the first official day of Comic-Con 2020! This year though, there are no superheroes or villains in the Gaslamp District, as the convention is entirely online. But many say they are perks of the Convention going virtual. Instead of going to Comic-Con, this year, Comic-Con comes to you.First thing's first. Print out your badge, just to make it feel official. This year, the Convention even created a new pet attendee option!Next, log onto the free online panels. Thursday's line-up included video presentations by anime superhouse, Crunchyroll, zoom-style discussions with artists and producers, as well as a read-through and Q&A sessions with the star-studded cast of the Star Trek Universe. The event was a true Hall H experience, minus the Hall H.RELATED: San Diego's hospitality industry suffers from Comic-Con@Home"As somebody who has parents that were in the Holocaust, you have to make the best of a situation. And that's what we did," panelist, Sandra Scheller, said.Since 2018, the South Bay resident has hosted "The Art and the Holocaust" panel, where she shares stories and art of her late mother, Ruth Sax. Though there was no audience interaction this year, she says going virtual does have its perks.Because the panels are uploaded on YouTube, there is no need to choose which panels to attend. There is no missing out if there are many going on at the same time."You can still go on and see it at any time," Scheller said. "If someone wants to go on the panel at two o'clock in the morning, six months from now, you're able to do that. And to use it as an educational tool in the schools. I love that!"WHAT TO KNOW: Panels, exclusives, activities for San Diego Comic-Con@HomePerhaps the biggest downside to Comic-Con going virtual may be felt by the cosplayers. They are unable to show off their creations. But there are some things that can ONLY be done virtually, like giving cosplay costumes the Hollywood treatment."They [Cosplayers] can still get their work and effort and their creativity seen online, just by making a video," Chris Kelly, CEO of Productioncrate LLC, said. "I think the best way to bring it to the next level is to add superpowers if you're a superhero."Productioncrate LLC is a visual effects company out of Kearny Mesa. Through their free or premium subscription service, users can instantly make their videos "more awesome," as Kelly said. During this quarantine, he says 800,000 users are doing just that.PHOTOS: Best cosplay from San Diego Comic-Con"Because you're at home, why not take advantage of it?" Kelly asked. "Learn a new skill-set, learn how to edit video, and have the coolest video anyone's ever seen!"We asked Kelly if he can give a five-second clip of his interview with ABC 10News, the 'superhero feel.' Within minutes, he was able to add special effects, including lightning, fire, and music onto the clip.Comic-Con encourages attendees to check out the virtual booths. Take a moment to shop online for exclusive merchandise to keep small vendors in business. 3055

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's not unusual to collect Christmas decorations year-round, but using them to cover every inch of a late model Dodge Caravan is pretty unique. He's known to many as the "Christmas Man of San Diego," whose van conversion continues to turn heads and spark smiles — no matter the season or social distance."He's a trans-dimensional emperor of over a google-plex of universes," said Larry Bogaert, as he stands with his pet parrot, Emerald Eagle, on his forearm. "I'm his Prime Minister and his daddy."In his mid-60s, Bogaert is a man with a big imagination who loves to share tales, turning his late-model Dodge Caravan into a storytelling canvas."I have Peter Pan, Wendy, Tinker Bell and the Boys going to Never Never Land," Bogaert shares.Almost every square inch of his vehicle features his own hand-drawn depictions of famed children's stories, mostly from English literature."And then I have Fezziwig's warehouse here," Bogaert says, pointing to various images on the car. "If you remember Scrooge did his apprenticeship at Fezziwig's.""For some things, I have a plan in mind, but other things as I buy things or acquire things you think, Oh, I can use that on the castle," Bogaert says, pointing to the roof of the vehicle which is covered by a towering display of church-like spires and angels. The hood is plastered with its own 3-D display of a miniature snow-covered town. And the sides of the van are covered in paint pen drawings all by his hand. The vehicle is a head turner and as we talk to Bogaert a couple of bicyclists stop to take pictures. Bogaert waves: "Thanks!" he says, before turning back to our camera, "99.9% of the time people give me the thumbs up. I've even had cops drive by and give me the thumbs up."Though, Bogaert admits there have been a few tickets over the years concerning visibility issues. But the former bus driver insists he's very good at using his side mirrors. Besides that, his inspiring creation has proven a good defense."One time the judge threw it out of court because she said her kids loved my car. She said case dismissed," he recalls.Another woman stops by on foot, "I like it. I think it's a positive message and we certainly need that now more than ever."Uncertain times for many, and Bogaert can relate to the feeling."With the coronavirus going on you should see how many people cheer my car because it's just something uplifting during these times," says Bogaert. "I like to be optimistic with the car. I like to be optimistic for myself if I can be. But I do get depressed."Underneath a kaleidoscope of ornaments inside the van, there is a snug space, where Bogaert sleeps, as — for the moment — this is his home."I bought a grocery store up in Crescent City. I always wanted to live in the redwoods," Bogaert said.He says that business venture years ago didn't go as planned, and the financial ramifications remain. But he doesn't dwell, as he focuses attention on another part of the van. After all, he and Emerald Eagle have a "google-plex of universes" to run. And they are, apparently, ever-expanding."I am adding more towers and a few more parts to it. I have some stuff inside that will go on in the next week or few days," said Bogaert. 3229

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s one of San Diego’s most iconic parks, but there’s a push to change its name and possibly everything it stands for.In September, two very different sides clashed at Chicano Park. The clash required police to break it up.The park is the heart of Barrio Logan and its murals are a colorful reminder of its history.Jorge Gonzales says it’s symbolic of the civil rights movement of the 70s. “These murals tell the story of the Civil Rights era. Right? That went far and beyond Barrio Logan and Chicano Park,” said Gonzales.Five people questioned that history in September at what was called the Patriotic Picnic.Police had to protect them from dozens of people who surrounded them in protest. “The murals are revolutionary. They're anti-American,” said activist Roger Ogden.Ogden was at the picnic and says political radicals and militants run Chicano Park. “It shouldn't be called Chicano Park. They could call it Hispanic Park, Latino Park and celebrate all the Hispanics and not just the militants. If you go down there and wave the US Flag, if I go down there I'm probably going to get beat up.”Ogden and several others shared the video from the picnic and their thoughts with the San Diego City Council on Tuesday.“You can celebrate the Hispanic culture but it should be broader and more inclusive. A lot of Hispanics wouldn't want to be called Chicano because it has a militant aspect to it,” said Ogden.Gonzales says the patriotic picnickers need to have a conversation with someone who understands the murals and who can translate the stories behind the paint.“I think there's a lot of miseducation. People have eyes and love for this park,” said Gonzales. That conversation could become another colorful reminder of the park’s history. 1771

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Millions of Californians plan to hit the road for the Fourth of July this year, and San Diego is a top destination. According to AAA of Southern California, 3.5 million SoCal residents plan to travel for the holiday, marking an all-time travel record for the holiday for the third year in a row. 79 percent of travelers in California are expected to travel by car, while 13 percent are planning to fly. Eight percent will travel by other means. AAA expects Las Vegas to be the most popular travel destination for SoCal residents this year followed by San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and the Grand Canyon.RELATED: California will have the highest gas tax in the US starting July 1As far as gas prices, AAA says after weeks of decline, California gas prices are hovering around the same price as this time last year.Gas prices will be increasing by nearly 6 cents per gallon July 1 due to a jump in California’s gas tax. When it comes to traffic, roads are expected to be especially congested on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 3. In Los Angeles, holiday traffic will almost triple travel times at the peak, which is expected to be between 11:30 a.m. through 1:30 p.m. July 3. 1206
