After weeks of relatively warm conditions for much of the Midwest and Northeast, a major snow storm has the Midwest and Northeast in its sights. Blizzard warnings have been issued for parts of the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska. Winter storm warnings are in effect for parts of Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Other parts of the Midwest and Northeast are under winter weather advisories or winter storm watches. One major impact the winter storm is having is on the presidential campaign. Several campaign events have been canceled ahead of the storm. Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg have canceled events scheduled for Iowa. The storm is expected to drop 4 to 8 inches in a large swath from Nebraska to Maine. Some areas could also see freezing rain. Note: This article previously noted that Amy Klobuchar's event in Minneapolis had been canceled. The event will still take place Friday evening. 984

A police department in Texas has apologized to a man after two mounted police officers leashed him to their horses during an arrest. The photos, taken by bystanders in Galveston, Texas, prompted outrage and accusations of racism against the police department.According to the Galveston Police, 43-year-old Donald Neely was arrested for criminal trespassing on Saturday. During his arrested, two officers — identified only as P. Brosch and A. Smith — clipped a rope to his handcuffs, which was being held by one of the officers. The officers' body cameras were activated at the time. The department did not say whether the two officers had been disciplined. 666

A study released this week indicates that seeing a fake news story can cause readers to have false memories. The study was conducted by the University of California, Irvine. The researchers warn that fake news could have a sizable impact on elections. The researchers used six news stories, four real and two fake, involving last year's Irish referendum on abortion legalization. The researchers presented these news stories to voters. The study found that nearly half of the respondents were able to recall fake information, sometimes in vivid detail. Those who supported the referendum were more likely to remember a falsehood about those in opposition; those in opposition to the referendum were also more like to remember a falsehood about referendum supporters. Many participants didn't reconsider when being told some of the information was in correct. Researchers say that believing false information is simply part of human nature. “To some degree this is unavoidable," Cailin O'Connor, UC Irvine Associate Professor in the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science, said. "False beliefs are part of the human condition. It is sometimes very hard to figure out the truth given the nature of evidence.” 1222

Actress Anna Faris was spending Thanksgiving were her family at a home in Lake Tahoe, California, when the house filled with carbon monoxide gas. In a tweet thanking first responders, Faris said, "I’m not quite sure how to express gratitude to the north Lake Tahoe fire department- we were saved from carbon monoxide- it’s a stupidly dramatic story but I’m feeling very fortunate."According to a press release by the North Tahoe Fire Protection District, members of Faris' family began feeling ill Thursday night, with symptoms akin to altitude sickness. After two of the 13 people in the house were treated at a hospital, the hospital relayed that the illnesses were related to carbon monoxide poisoning. Two additional patients were transported to the hospital, and nine others were treated at the scene. When fire crews evacuated Faris' family from the home, they measured carbon monoxide levels nearly 6 times the recommended indoor level for carbon monoxide, even after the home was ventilated. The home, which was said to be a short-term rental, was not equipped with a carbon monoxide detector. Fire Chief Mike Schwartz of the North Tahoe Fire Protection District stressed that those using short-term rentals should check for working carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. “We are so thankful to report that this holiday disaster was averted,” said Fire Chief Mike Schwartz. “Situational awareness is so important. Whether you are at home or traveling, it is important ensure that smoke and CO alarms are in working order anywhere you stay. It’s not a bad idea to consider bringing your own alarm when you travel, just to be safe.”Justin Boggs is a writer for the E.W. Scripps National Desk. 1708

A study released Wednesday by the British Medical Journal claims that vegetarians could have a higher risk of a stroke than meat eaters. The study followed more than 48,000 participants in the UK for nearly 18 years. The study placed participants in three groups: Meat eaters, fish eaters and vegetarians. The study claims that vegetarians were 20 percent more likely to have a stroke than meat eaters, which equaled to be three additional haemorrhagic stroke victims per 1,000 participants. Before you change your eating habits, you should know that meat eaters were more likely to develop a heart disease than vegetarians. The difference between meat eaters and vegetarians was 10 additional cases of heart disease per 1,000 participants. According to the British Medical Journal, previous studies on the correlation between a vegetarian diet and strokes only reported stroke mortality. In those studies, there was no significant difference between vegetarians and meat eaters in stroke mortality. The study did adjust for self reported high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, and body mass index, which suggests that part of the associations might be attributed to these factors, it says."However, the lower risk in vegetarians and vegans remained marginally significant after adjustment for all of these factors," the study said.To read the full study, click 1389
