NANNING, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has urged that more efforts be implemented to fight floods, while reassuring those residents living in areas ravaged by flooding and inspecting flood damage, during his visit to Wuzhou city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, which has been plagued by torrential rains.During the two-day visit ending Sunday, Wen checked on water levels and river banks in Wuzhou, and visited households in mountainous areas, urban downtowns and rural areas, pledging the government would use all means to prevent and fight flooding.Further, Wen called on local authorities to closely monitor weather changes and strengthen forecasting and warning systems to ensure an advanced emergency response.Further, more efforts were demanded to prevent damages from floods and landslides, Wen said. He highlighted the importance of relief work in schools, mines, railways and roads, as well as tourism sites.Wen required immediate reports and instant responses on risks of dam and reservoir breaks from local officials. BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Some 87 percent of Chinese who studied abroad in 2009 received financial support from their parents, China.com.cn, a government-run website, reported Sunday quoting a survey by education research company MyCOS.The survey divided its interviewees into two categories: undergraduate students who graduated from China's top 211 universities in 2009 and those who did not.According to the survey, 1.64 percent of undergraduate students graduating from China's top 211 universities in 2009 went abroad for study, 0.61 percentage points higher year on year.Some 0.69 percent of undergraduate students from the other category also pursued overseas studies.According to the survey, the majority of the students who studied abroad took economics and business management as their major.The survey also showed 9 percent of those studying abroad received scholarships from the foreign institutions while 3 percent supported themselves through part-time jobs. One percent were funded by the Chinese government.Chinese universities and colleges graduated 6.1 million students in 2009, according to statistics from the Ministry of Education.

BEIJING, June 29 (Xinhua) -- The quake zone of Yushu in northwest China has received donations valued at over 8.5 billion yuan (about 1.25 billion U.S. dollars) as of Monday, with about 90 percent being in cash and the remaining in relief materials, said the civil affairs ministry.The ministry said in a statement that it received 2.407 billion yuan while the Qinghai provincial government of the quake zone received nearly 2 billion yuan in donations, with the Red Cross Society of China and the China Charity Federation each raising about 2 billion yuan.About ten percent of the total donations had been allocated to quake relief work along with reconstruction and restoration, the statement said.Yushu was hit by a 7.1-magnitude quake on April 14, with more than 2,200 people being killed and thousands of homes flattened.Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said on June 20 that the government would soon implement a reconstruction plan for the area, which sets a goal to accomplish major reconstruction tasks within three years.
