SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The San Diego Humane Society is asking for the public’s help in finding the person responsible for seriously injuring a little dog.On Aug. 5, at around 5:30 p.m., a passerby found a severely injured Chihuahua in an alley near 339 S. 39th Street in San Diego’s Mountain View area.Humane Society officials said the one-year-old dog is in critical but stable condition “with a guarded prognosis” and is being cared for at the Humane Society’s Pilar & Chuck Bahde Center for Shelter Medicine.Details on the dog's injuries were not released.San Diego Humane Society Humane Law Enforcement Chief Bill Ganley said, “We are hoping someone might recognize this dog and can help us find the person who did this. This is a helpless animal who did not stand a chance against the person who decided to hurt him. It is heartbreaking.”Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to ,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousands of people spent their final day of the holiday weekend at San Diego beaches, just as the Beach Hazards Warning expired. Mother of two, Shannon Crais spent the day at Ocean Beach Sunday. "We live a couple of blocks away, so we come down here a couple of times a week."Her daughter Sam likes to play tag with the waves, as they ripple towards her older brother Alex. The Ocean Beach residents say they know the potential dangers of their favorite play area. "I talk to my son about it because he is a little bit bigger," Craig said. "But my daughter, she stays close. We talk about the ocean being dangerous."Sunday afternoon, the National Weather Service dropped the Beach Hazards Warning for all of San Diego County. But all weekend, beachgoers faced strong rip currents and high breaking waves. This was a point of concern for some, but great news for surfers like Jesus Rodriguez. "I think the hurricane is bringing the swell from down south and it has been awesome!" Rodriguez said. Rodriguez says the waves were much better this long holiday weekend thanks to the high surf advisory. They were so good that he had to share the waves with a lot more people than usual. That is why he was doing two-a-day sessions over the last few days. "You get a lot better waves and a lot better form on the wave, so you can start ripping them up," Rodriguez said. Craig also appreciates the beautiful, ridable waves. As a mother, wants her kids to be safe, but she is not totally against having her children learn about the water on their own."If you get wiped out a couple of times, you gain a little bit more respect for the ocean," Craig laughed. 1678

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Unified School District, one of the state's largest districts, begins the new school year online Monday.Even though California has given both private and public schools in San Diego County the green light to reopen schools on Tuesday, Sept. 1, SD Unified officials say for now they will stick with distance learning.The district's online instruction plan includes:A six-hour school day with customized learning experiences for each K-12 studentAll students will have daily, live interaction with their teachers via video conferencingCustom learning experiences will be based on student needs and will include daily live, online instruction (up to three hours), independent learning (at least two hours), working with other students in small groups or participating in educator office hours (at least one hour)All Elementary students will receive instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, and the artsStudents will receive grades to measure their progressSome children who have faced learning challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic may be offered appointments for in-person sessions, which could begin as soon as late September, according to the district."The teacher will of course try various interventions teaching strategies online, but if the teacher comes to the conclusion that this student would benefit from in-person interventions, then the teacher will reach out to the family," said San Diego Education Association President Kisha Borden.Students will be identified by their teachers for participation based on several factors: Students who had below standard marks on their spring 2020 report cards, special education students who did not meet IEP goals, and special education students with intense support needs.The district says this option will not be offered immediately and will take teachers a few weeks to make these assessments. 1940

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The record-breaking heat and drought are forcing animals, including coyotes, out of their natural habitats and closer to humans.Krystal Ruiz lost her two dogs, Millie and Pepe, to coyotes last week.“It's sad; it's very sad. I'm just lost for words. I don't know,” said Ruiz.Her friends and neighbors aren’t surprised.RELATED: Escondido man attacked by coyote“They have said they've seen coyotes wandering around. I'm also on the nextdoor app, and they said they've seen coyotes or a friend has seen coyotes snatch a dog and kill it.”Early August is also pupping season when newly-weaned coyotes venture out on their own for food and water.“Just like us, they're trying to find reprieve from the heat. Their figures for 2018 show coyote incidents are down compared to last year. In 2017, there were 142 coyote attacks. More than halfway through 2018, San Diego is on track to stay below that number, with 64 attacks.According to the website, there have been six reported pet deaths this year.“I believe we were getting one to two calls earlier this season. Another recommendation: don’t leave food or water outside your home. Pet owners should also stay alert in the morning and evening when coyotes are especially active.
