LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) - Supporters of a sales tax increase in Lemon Grove plan to gather signatures for the final time this weekend in hopes of qualifying a ballot measure that they say is needed to save the city from disincorporation.Facing gloomy revenue projections in a city with the lowest sales tax rate in the county, supporters want to put a three-quarter cent increase before voters on the March ballot.Without the hike, the city might be forced to dissolve into the county, which would take possession of city assets and likely sell City Hall, said councilman Jerry Jones."We've done all the cuts that we can do," he said. "We're in worse shape than we were 10 years ago."The city spends roughly 80 percent of its budget on public safety, leaving little for infrastructure and other programs like addressing homelessness, Jones said. The tax hike would generate 3 million dollars, raising the city's total sales tax revenue by 38 percent, he said.At the Grove Grinder restaurant, business owner Sharon Jones is skeptical of the doomsday scenario."I think it's just a scare tactic," she said. She thinks the city should help its business community grow, and says raising the sales tax might do just the opposite."There are more businesses closing down here in lemon grove. If they think they're getting the sales tax that comes from businesses, they're not going to get as much as they think they're going to get," she said.Councilman Jones was once opposed to a tax increase too, but now he say it's necessary."There are just no other alternatives if we want to stay a city," he said.Supporters have until September 30 to gather 1,489 signatures to qualify for the March 2020 ballot."We think we can" get enough signatures by the deadline, said Yadira Altamirano, one of the proponents of the Lemon Grove Tax Measure. "We need all of our neighbors and Lemon Grove registered voters to come sign the petition this weekend."Organizers will be collecting signatures in the Sprouts parking lot Saturday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and Sunday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., she said.If the measure doesn't qualify for the March ballot, the council could step in and vote to put a measure on the November ballot, Councilman Jones said. 2239

Labor Day Weekend may look a little different during the coronavirus pandemic. Retailers are hoping consumers are still motivated by a good deal to shop on the unofficial end of summer. With the ups and downs in the retail sector, many businesses will be offering discounts and deals to move inventory and make room for winter items. And don’t forget about the small businesses in your community. The discounts may not be as deep as a big box store can offer, but some may honor lower prices or be willing to negotiate, plus it supports a local business.Traditionally, Labor Day sales are a good time to find indoor and outdoor furniture and decor on sale, school supplies for those oops-I-really-need-that-for-class needs, as well as spring and summer clothing and gear (think: camping, grills, etc.) as stores try to make room for fall’s pants and sweaters.Whether customers are heading online or in-person, here’s a look at some of the biggest discounts being offered this year:The Home Depot and Lowe’s: For those pandemic projects that are still on the to-do list, Home Depot is offering up to 40 percent off some appliances and furniture, and 30 percent off select tools and storage options. Lowe’s has up to 40 percent off some appliances, and similar discounts on tools, furniture and storage options.Wayfair: Designing for inside or outside, some items are 55 to 70 percent off, like furniture for the bedroom, kitchen and outdoors, rugs, and mattresses.Macy’s: Save on sheets for those mattresses, dishes for those new tables and summer clothing with up to 60 percent off select items.REI: Some summer clothing and outdoor camping and recreation gear is on sale up to 70 percent off.Nike: For those who are exercising more during the pandemic, get up to 40 percent off on shoes and workout gear.Best Buy: Those still looking for laptops, monitors and technology accessories for work-or-learning-from-home can save a few hundred dollars this weekend.Amazon: The annual Amazon Prime Day, which touts Black Friday-like discounts on the online retailer in July, was delayed and a new date has not been announced yet. Over Labor Day weekend, shoppers can find up to 50 percent off on electronics, clothing, clothing, home and garden, etc.Etsy: Participating sellers are offering 20 percent off fall crafts and creative items.Mattresses: Labor Day weekend will be filled with discounts on bedding options. Nearly every major brand, including Tempur-Pedic, Purple, Casper, Sleep Number, etc. are offering deals right now.Furniture and home goods store IKEA has had Labor Day weekend sales in the past, however their website does not have anything listed for this year.Walmart and Target both have select summer clothing, shoes and home goods on sale or clearance. However, neither have large weekend deals posted at this time.Scripps Media and this station do not receive any benefit or payment by including these links. 2931

LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) - A man died after being shot by deputies inside a Lemon Grove Del Taco Saturday night, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. Last month's headlines read, '30-year-old man dies after attending COVID party thinking virus was a hoax.'"They are being very egocentric. They're not thinking about how their actions could affect other people," said Licensed Therapist Jaime Bronstein. She believes young people go to COVID parties either to be exposed because they fall into peer pressure or they truly believe the virus doesn't exist."They also don't have very strong impulse control. And that's because their prefrontal cortex is not fully developed. And it's not fully developed until they're 25 years old. And that's responsible for making the right and wrong decision," she explained.Bronstein says many attending these parties are young single men going through the 'Young Male Syndrome.'"They just love engaging in high-risk behavior such as high-speed driving, doing illicit drugs, doing the tide-pod challenge, the cinnamon challenge, and in this case, going to a COVID party," she said. Here in the Tampa Bay area, we've seen young people lining up outside local establishments without masks and not social distancing. So how can parents get their kids to realize, they're not invincible?"First sit down with your kids and have a discussion about decision making and consequences. And you want to be able to talk with your children, not to them. You want them to feel seen and heard and you really want to listen to them," she said. And if you have adult friends not following CDC guidelines? This social worker recommends going into the conversation without any judgment."You don't want the other person to feel defensive. And basically just go in with compassion. I care about you. I don't want anything bad to happen to you," she said.Bronstein gives advice on how to better handle the stress of this pandemic on her website: www.therelationshipexpert.com.She also has a blog and a radio show, where she gives advice on other mental health issues, which are also on her website. This story was first reported by Wendy Ryan at WFTS in Tampa Bay, Florida. 2036
