SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Choir members in San Diego have made it their mission to use music to bring comfort to people nearing the end of their lives.Threshold Choir's director, Nadean Burington, started the local chapter in 2011.  It is an a cappella choir that sings for and with those at the thresholds of life.  They sing at the bedside at San Diego hospices, institutions, and private homes.Recently, doctors diagnosed Burington with stage four cancer. She has recently started requesting the choir's services.“It's wonderful. It's a gift back to me now for what I've given to help start it,” Burington said. “I feel well at this point but I want to the music continue for as long as possible.”Burington says the next directors have been picked out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Customers at two Walmart stores in the North County say they received hundreds of dollars in fake bills.Last Thursday night, Billy Wagner went to the Walmart on Center Drive in San Marcos and cashed out a ,000 money transfer from a friend on the east coast."Watched the lady count the money on the counter three times," said Wagner.On the same night - and about five miles away in Escondido - John Whittingham stopped by the Walmart Neighborhood Market on East Valley Parkway to cash a check, receiving four 0 bills. "You won't believe it. These two 0 bills are counterfeit. We marked them, and they're not coming in," said Whittingham.Meanwhile, Wagner's bills were also raising suspicions."I couldn't them unstuck to count them," said Wagner. Wagner took a closer look and saw that eight of his ten bills had the same serial number. He says his bank confirmed they were fake.RELATED: Girls Scouts cheated with counterfeit money"Disbelief. It was extreme disbelief," said Wagner, who filed a report with the sheriff's department.He says there was disbelief, partly because the counterfeit bills look very real except for a few differences."There is no watermark on the fakes. They are also less gritty when you touch them," said Wagner.Of course, the identical serial numbers give the fakes away. 10News compared the bills received by both men, and those fake serial numbers matched. Questions linger. Where did the money come from? How many other customers got the bills? And how did the money slip past Walmart's safeguards?"I never figured going into Walmart, counterfeit money would be floating," said Whittingham.Whittingham did get his money back from Walmart. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As the unofficial start of summer came and went, one thing that many San Diegans were without was the use of community pools.Reopening community and apartment pools is listed in San Diego County's pilot program to phase into California's Stage 3 of reopening early.The county has submitted a letter petitioning the state to be allowed to enter the pilot program, but has yet to hear back.RELATED: Is it safe to swim in pools this summer amid COVID-19? CDC offers guidanceWhile Memorial Day weekend say many Americans looking to cool off, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention offered new guidance on community pools. The agency says currently, "there is no evidence that the virus that causes COVID-19 can be spread to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, spas, or water play areas. Proper operation and maintenance (including disinfection with chlorine and bromine) of these facilities should inactivate the virus in the water."But for San Diego County, health officials are leaning on the state for the go ahead on pools. Sarah Sweeney, communications officer with the county's Health & Human Services Agency, says the risks go beyond pool chemicals.RELATED: Gov. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Cruise ship cancellations amid the Coronavirus pandemic have cost the region more than 0 million in lost economic activity, according to the Port of San Diego.The Port says since March, 75 cruises have canceled, meaning a 6 million loss in retail, restaurant, lodging and related transportation and shipping services. The 2020-2021 season, which was supposed to start Sept. 13, has already seen 49 cancellations. "When it’s safe for sailings to resume, we will do what we can to work with and support our cruise and public health partners to ensure the safety of cruise passengers, terminal staff, and the public," the Port said in a statement. The loss is hitting tourism-related businesses, already suffering from a loss of conventions, and social distancing restrictions. Chuck Abbott, general manager of the Intercontinental Hotel San Diego, just steps from the terminal, said cruisers usually stay a night pre or post cruise."It's still an amount of business that comes, which is beneficial," he said. "They're on leisure, and those people usually like to dine out and enjoy things."The CDC has halted cruising through at least Sept. 30. If that expires, San Diego's next arrival would be Nov. 5 through the Carnival Miracle. Some European cruise lines have once again started sailing, with capacity limits and social distancing restrictions. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As grocery stores work to fill consumer demand created by the coronavirus pandemic, several San Diego stores are hiring.Albertsons and Vons locations in the San Diego area are working to fill about 1,000 jobs, a spokesperson told 10News. So far, more than 200 of the positions have been filled and locations are actively conducting interviews.
